Clubs that charge to attend family day

Remove this Banner Ad

I have noticed that some clubs charge a fee to attend their family day.

What do you think of this and can you tell me if your club charges.

So far i know that Richmond asks for a gold coin donation and Carlton charges $10 for adults and $25 for a family ticket ( free for members)

Any else?

So long as it's free for members couldn't care what they charge for non members/on lookers.

Don't think our club charges. They asked for a Gold Coin Donation at the recent Aust Day Cricket match against the Bushrangers that went towards the floods. Not against that at all.

Smart thinking by Carlton. If you were going to get a membership anyway, then it just forces your hand on the day. We generally sign up a lot of members on family day.

Those who are signed up are looked after .... as they should be.

The eagles equivalent of family day last year in the pre-season was free for all.

However i can appreciate what Carlton are doing - the club is a member organisation - and hence members get in free.

If you aren't a member - you don't get the free benefits that come along with that

And those that are struggling for money and wait until the day before the first home game get shafted?

After all its still at least 6 - 7 weeks before most teams first home game and some peoples finances are stretched that thinly.

Personally i don't like the idea. I would of thought the clubs would make enough money on the day out of selling merchandise etc

For the Hawks - members free / non-members gold coin donation

I don't have a problem with Carlton charging a fee but I don't think you should be penalised to steeply just because you maybe can't afford a membership. For many especially those with families this is the only opportunity you get to be up close and personal with the team you love and it seems a shame that it would come at a cost when for some finances are already strung tightly.

Carlton members are probably the slowest to sign up of any team. Year after year we lag behind and make a late surge before our first H&A match or even a month or so in. It leaves a great deal of uncertainty sometimes. There is no real explanation for it as most other teams surge earlier.

If someone does not intend to sign up but wants access to the players, then that just makes the queues longer for members and intended members. Hopefully no intended member is put out by it, but we are talking $10 an adult, and if they can't afford that, they probably aren't going to fork out $150 in a few weeks time either.

It's a non-issue.

Also to consider is what some teams might turn on for their family days. I am sure they are not all identical.

Hawthorns is completely free and it includes player signings, happy snaps, hawka, dipper, spongebob squarepants, and amusements and activities for all ages.

Carlton charging people is pretty low mate. No matter how badly they need the money

And I've had the troll-fest.

The cards will be in the mail, the thread will be cleaned, and, the good lord willing and the creek don't rise, we'll open this thread again soon.

Attended a NAB cup game between Carlton and Hawthorn at Aurora stadium a few years back ..after the game an announcement was made via the PA that Hawthorn supporters were invited into the rooms after the games to meet the players and get some autographs ..for a price .

The same announcement was made for the Carlton players (except they would be behind the main grandstand)..and there was no charge ...i guess you are just a plain hypocrite ..or have NFI what you are talking about .

The team that sells most of it's home games interstate is the team that really needs the money .

Perspective is all important. The Age, a couple of year ago had a critical article about clubs charging fans to have photographs taken with the players at family days. Clubs will try to raise funds in different ways, and perhaps stones should not be thrown unless you know of all the ways every club raises funds.

If anything, the breach between the business of football and its heartland is widening. It emerged this week that some clubs have taken to charging fans to have their photographs taken with players. These include Collingwood, Richmond and, — predictably — Hawthorn, at a family day, ripping off its own. Last year, Hawthorn made a profit of $4.1 million. Next, clubs will charge for autographs; it has happened elsewhere. Truthfully, it is the clubs that should be charged, with extortion.

As I said, I am not judging. Perspective would be nice though as most clubs are or have been involved in something that fans might not necessarily approve of.

Had to chuckle re-reading that article - his contempt for Hawthorn, palpable.

Like I said I don't have a problem with Carlton charging a fee if that is what it chooses to do - people that want to take part will pay for it and like at Hawthorn where they (predictably :D) charge for photos to be taken people who wish to do so will pay for the privilege.

Clubs will continue to treat their fans with contempt as long as fans are prepared to put up with it. We even see this with membership packages where, while not overly important, the nick nacks get smaller every year but the price increases.

As Ben would say, such is life

And once again this gets brought up.

The charge was $25 for a picture with one of the players + the premiership cup, and the money went to the bushfire appeal
This was a professional photo also.

The players were around outside of the designated time in that photobooth for FREE photo's and autographs

I have no problem with anyone charging for fans to get in, it is the club's choice, but to accuse the hawks of doing something without stating all the facts is just plain wrong.

I should also add, the gold coin donation at the gate for non-members goes directly to the club's chosen charity (usually beyond blue)

The club puts a large amount of it's funds into charity work, far more then any other club

Yeah, I noticed that. What is the history there?

The article was over the top and opportunism at its best. I only posted it to demonstrate that we can't be too quick to judge other clubs, and we don't always realise what is going on in our own back yards sometimes.

Clubs have to be innovative in order to raise money these days. Carlton have been in financial peril and still have a large debt. Do we ask for donations or do we charge for something where people get something in return?

We are not generally known as tin rattlers, you know, the battling working man. It seems to me (but I do not know) that a lot of our supporter base would probably not come to our aid unless it was at the 11th hour before the club wound up. If they think they are getting something for their money, they help out and we don't need to rattle tins to bring down debt. Personally, I don't know why we can't eradicate our debt quickly like the Dees did but the club probably know their market. We have the image of being bluebloods so I suspect our supporters expect money to continue to come from wealthy benefactors. A false sense of security perhaps.

We can only guess as to the reasons clubs do things sometimes.

Hey, I didn't offer commentary here, just posted an old article. I am hardly going to say I have no issue with Carlton charging admission, then pot the Hawks for charging for photographs.

Clubs have to do what they have to do, and we do not always know what people are getting for that money, or where the money is going. Perhaps the club are giving back in other ways. The point is not to be too quick to judge any team on this score.

Kinda funny; supporters always believe in the best of their own club and have the belief and contempt to bad-mouth other clubs.

Really, every club is just an organisation portrayed by its actions by one cycle of employees. When it comes down to it, every club and it’s values are similar, so dividing and criticising one club, or every club bar your own, is just juvenile and ignorant.

Thanks Mojo. I've been waiting for the right place to post this gem and you just provided it.

Have no idea whether Saints charge or not but I have no problem with a club charging a fee. As long as it is relatively nominal....why not.
