Anyone have info on Justin Plapp? Ex-Saint, doing quite well coaching in lower league, would he be a person of interest?

Listening to Rocket Eade on the Unpluggered podcast. He seems like a very knowledgeable and likeable bloke. Obviously he was a very good coach in his own right.
would it be worth us offering him up a job as an assistant or even part time gig?
he’s not afraid to give a good spray and tell it how it is but he’s also good with players as well.

Also, if you look at successful teams lately, they all seem to have a very experienced ex senior coach as an assistant, which is something we seem to be lacking.

Likeable????

Don’t want that anywhere near us

So your proof is to show 2 videos of 2 hack ruckmen? Gorringe, who couldn’t get a gig at Carlton when they had an injured Kruezer and no one else, and Minson who used to do the Absolute dumbest shit of any player in the last 20 years.
Gorringe even said he was a good bloke in the video.
And yet that’s your reasoning for not wanting him?
I for one reckon he’d compliment the likes of Ratts really well.

It’s well renowned he was a campaigner .. that’s 2 of a hundred examples .. you’ve also missed the point from the first video Cameron telling him to shut up several times so they can function in the box

Another Gold Coast player also quit Balwyn when he was announced as coach

He said likeable away from footy not in footy .. I’ve heard plenty say he was a campaigner at managing people no chance we should touch him with

Does know his stuff, has upset a few people with his forthright approach. Had some tough coaching gigs but never got a flag but got sides into finals 50% coaching win record and was a very good player.
So who do you see in the coaches box at the saints? Sexton, Lethlean, Roughhead and Lade and probably skrobalak...Gimme a flipping break please...........Whats wrong with this club?

Bill it's still early very few clubs have announced any assistant appointments as yet, maybe now that were in GF week a few might drop, but don't lose ya shit just yet, and fyi Skrobalak has left the club.

I knew skrob had gone and was talking in the past sense- so 2021 is still relevant- no ex other AFL coach in the box. That was my point and the original posters question as well. I will lose my s**t if they dont put one or some actual ex coaches in there who are not pen pushers and know what a football strategy is.

I think sometimes the coaches can get too carried away with making every single player versatile and trying to fit them into 5 different positions from wing/half back/half forward/mid which at the end of the day stifles the players development.

2 players that come too find are Billings and Battle.

Billings started off as a half forward with elite skills and an eye for goal. In his first few season he was looking like being a genuine match winner with 50-60 shots on goal per season. We then tried to turn him into a bit part mid and them eventually a winger and now I don't think anyone know what positon he plays. He has gone from a high quality forward in his first couple of seasons to a run of the mill winger who averages 25 touches with very minimal hurt factor. I was Billings biggest fan, he could have turned out to be a Stevie J type but mo we have killed his development.

The other is Battle. Started of well as a CHF in his first few games. Had elite kicking for goal knew how to lead up at the ball with his aggression. Then we tried him at CHB and didn't look out of place as well, considering it was his first season ever playing that position. The last 2 years we have tried to make him some sort of Wingman and it's been an epic fail.

I just hope we don't do the same thing with Jack Higgins. Leave him in his current role and don't try to turn him into a mid etc.

I also find our coaches over the last 10 years to be way too stubborn in terms of giving genuine opportunities to kids to play as a full time mid. This has been our weakest area and besides Steele we have not developed a single player to be able to run through the midfield even though some had the potential to play there.

The 1 player I'm talking about is Clark. Yes he may not have set the world on fire, but leave him in the guys for 10 games in a row to find his feet. As soon as he has a bad game we move him to the half back line. Look at Baily Smith and the dogs his first 10 games were average. Yet Bevo persisted with him even though he had the likes of Wallis/Libba/Bint/Macrae but persisted with him and fast tracked him.

We seem to protect players way too much instead of giving them a proper shot. It's no our youngster looked under developed in terms of fitness and body shape compared to others.

Important thing is we have a conditioning guy, ahead of the pre-season.

Gresham has played entire seasons in the midfield.
Plenty have attended centre bounces, ( though we are probably a bit more settled this year ).
Give them time , sure, but i don't buy you saying put them solely in the midfield for ten games, even if they are crap.

It would hurt to have a bad cop coach as well.

Richo seemed to turn him into a risk averse type too.

I have had concerns for some time now that our early draft picks failure to become elite or at least very good reather than just ok was not becouse we picked the wrong guys but becouse there is a problem in how we develop them. The way we have moved to recruiting players from other clubs instead of developing our own leads me to believe that some people at the club may have the same concern.

Or we have become gun shy because we have been so bad at drafting we go the safer route?

In reality I think Lethlean turned over 3/4 of the list and needed to remain competitive at the same time so we chased mature talent rather than going draft first where it would have taken 4 years of playing together to get to a competitive standard. His report must have been absolutely damning.

Our player development has to be one of the poorest in the league.

Over the past 10 years besides Jack Steele we have not developed 1 AA player. Jack Steven is the only other one that comes to mind. 10 plus years of recruiting and developing has got to be the worse mix in the league. Every year there are players that are not even high picks that make it into the side.

This year the AA under 22 team was released. We had 1 player in Max King in it.

I feel with younger players we are not exposing them as often as we should and making them actually play crucial roles instead of sticking them to flanks and pockets.

We haven't played finals besides last year, yet we have only 1 start mid in Steele and had to draft the other 2 in Crouch and Jones.

Our development needs massive work. More players have stagnated than have improved from their first years imo.

Worries me that Ratts is completely set on carrying on with the Battle/Wing experiment.
I hope we get some assistants in who are experienced and not just yes men who can argue a point with him if necessary.

This isn't the case in that last article posted. Seems to suggest Ratts sees value in getting him to focus on one end of the ground this preseason to give him the best opportunity at his career.
