Tony Cochrane stamping his authority on the future here, you can be sure this is planned and Tony is all over it I think

Big Tone's the man...

From Foxfooty:

Suns chairman Tony Cochrane has been instrumental in the recruitment of Evans, who will leave his post at the AFL and fill the position made vacant by outgoing Gold Coast CEO Andrew Travis.

Great article from the Bulletin's Tommy Boswell on how things went down...

"NEW Suns CEO Mark Evans says a meeting with Gold Coast chairman Tony Cochrane late last night convinced him to rebuff Hawthorn’s advances and take up a role in Queensland.

Evans was in discussions with Hawthorn about becoming the club’s new chief executive but the former AFL football operations manager felt he could make more of an impact at the Suns who were yet to taste any success.

“I had a chat with Hawthorn but I hadn’t applied,” Evans said.

“Coming into this weekend the decision wasn’t clear for me as to what I would do but I became intrigued with what Tony and what (Suns board member) Bob East said last night.

“I can’t take on a job unless I’m really committed to it and the impact you can have.

“The most compelling part of last night was that I felt like I can make a difference here with people who are already doing great work.

“The more we thought about it the more we thought there was a terrific chance to make a mark on the club and help it achieve what it’s been hoping to achieve over the last seven years.”

Cochrane labelled suggestions the AFL planted Evans at the club “absolute lies” and revealed he headhunted the club’s new boss as soon as former CEO Andrew Travis indicated he was leaving last week.

“Did we lobby the hell out of the AFL and were they openly helpful in securing Mark? They were,” Cochrane said.

“But to suggest they rung us up and planted Mark here is an absolute lie. The truth of the matter is we pushed really hard to get somebody of Mark’s credentials.

“When Andrew indicated to us he thought he would move on and have a break from footy and the club … we were obviously respectful of that but at the same time disappointed and acutely aware we were about to start the season.

“I jumped on the phone and started harassing Mark and everybody from the AFL system from Gill (McLachlan) down to help me work with Mark and to convince Mark this was the place to come.

“Andrew was most certainly not pushed and I for one am grateful for his honesty in bringing it to a head. We could have been left high and dry. I got very affixed on who I wanted to bring to this club.”

Evans became the AFL’s footballer operations boss in 2013 and was four years into a job that he initially predicted would only have a six-year lifespan.

Evans, who will start at his new club on March 6, discussed the potential role at the Suns with both AFL CEO McLachlan and former Gold Coast boss Travis Auld before deciding to relocate his family from Melbourne to Queensland.

Evans said helping the club become profitable and delivering a women’s team to the Gold Coast were among his priorities

“Being at the AFL executive table you have discussions about all business — commercial and non-commercial,” Evans said.

“Having had experience in those types of things like radio negotiations and the CBA … I think I’m well prepared for that.

“We also have to look forward to the talent in Queensland and if we can get the talent up we should fight like hell to get a women’s team.”

His (Mark Evans) quoted comments give me hope, has recognised where the needs are and is targeting important concerns.

The issue with a womens team is that it's not likely to raise its head for some time, as Matchu has pointed out, the most talented of the GC girls are already playing for the Lions and I would think that other clubs would be in line b4 us.

Let's get the guys to where they are a talking point around the traps, first and foremost.

Yeah thankfully one of them we got rid of was our membership & ticketing manager, seriously don't know how she lasted 6 years in the job, she cost the club more members in her first 2 years then she would of signed up in her 6 years in the job

Was that Simone?

Any story behind why she isn't there. I agree 100% with your statement about costing the club members. I'm sure internally she was good at what she did, but her customer service was horrible. I do know multiple people who did not sign up as a result of the poor quality service provided by that staff member. And god forbid you ever prove her wrong about something, because she will then make your life hell when it comes to memberships.

So interesting times at Metricon
Big clean out
Word is Travers didn't even know it was coming til he was phoned and told
Same for the memberships department
The manager who ordered all the new x blade gear that didn't fit anyone without canvassing anyone elses's opinion?
All had to be sent back.Gone

All of the above are a fail, interesting times usually mean conflict. "I hope you live in interesting times"

FFS, you have a relatively new market combined with ex Vics who are going to support AFL, state of the art stadium and facilities, get it right.

If you don't, it costs the club (and state) money and the current 'buy in' franchises favor results.

You, (the Suns supporters) and I, know we have the players that can bring exactly that.

Exactly
If it's true and I don't doubt my source it's exactly what was wrong with us in the early years
Lots of excited amateurs pretending to be professionals
