News Coburg cash strapped (Richmond may have own VFL team next year)

While it'd be great to have the ressies play at PRO before the game, it'll never make much in the way of recouping the costs of the team.

The ground capacity is pretty small after all, especially if we don't want to spend a fortune fixing up the old stand and as you'd expect entry to be free to members, they'd only really make money on food and drink, and with the small crowd, many of whom would turn up 'late' (just see the second half before the game...) that's not going to be a massive money spinner.

Benny said a few weeks back that by 2014 they will be playing VFL and TAC at Punt Rd

Not sure why there is so much emphasis here on making money from the 2nds. It's about player development. Period!

It will run at a loss....it will be funded by the increased revenues of other areas.

Great.

I was just saying that it wasn't going to make enough money to make a noticable dent in the costs, whatever the time/place it's played.

As a unifying club spirit thing, and for development it'll be great, but we also need to recognise it'll also be a sizable money pit.

Id oubt we would want to play it as a curtain raiser to the main game though.
It's just not going to happen.
The comp wants to be taken serious as a stand alone comp, not some Mickey Mouse circus act that bends over and plays bitch to big brother.
I'm all for Punt Rd games, but they will be stand alone games when they happen.

Problem with that is most week the G hosts 2-3 games. Makes it hard to have it as a stand alone game and attract a crowd. For mine either we play at Punt Rd before Richmond games or we move out to Craigieburn and play there.

That's silly. You can play it anytime. Just because Melbourne vs Hawthorn is across the park, doesn't mean you can have Richmond MKII vs ????? on at the same time.

the vfl is a bizarre football landscape...an u/18s comp where teams dont go into senior ranks, you just graduate out into the world and go play somewhere else...so very odd and the teams lack soul and are seem to be just outlets for tinkering with game plans (for the AFL sides)

the big difference with the WAFL is that the AFL sides have some but not a lot of control over the players that go back and play. there have been many instances where players have had to change WAFL allegiances in order to get a league game because the WAFL side wouldnt play them due to form.

VFL reserves could be an interesting concept to revive again but i think having a reserves side is just a fad at the moment, WCE never seem to have needed their own reserves side, had plenty of success.

FWIW WCE and Freo tried in the late 90s to align themselves with Claremont and South Freo exclusively, completely flopped (similar to VFL teams ATM)

also i think the WAFL works better with its AFL player allegiances due to the draft system it incorporates now, bottom team gets first pick

Sorry BF, just read Caro's article again.

I'm not sure now. I assume we would drop the aligned licence fee, but there are substantial extra costs in fielding our own side. Maybe around $400k per year?
If it meant that we would have our own vfl side ,I would more than happily sell 1 game to either Darwin,NT,Canberra or Tasmania to fund that.

1 Vfl stand alone side played at punt road - cost $500,000
1 Afl Game sold , returns $500,000(usually Gc or Brisbane, Gws)

No Brainer if u ask me

Good point... well worth the expense.

Great post. Send it to the club. I would support it.

I think the 11 victorian sides should field standalone reserves teams, with 7 ex-VFA clubs also admitted to make up the 18 teams that would mirror the AFL draw.

This would cost AFL each club and estimated $500k each a year (yes/no?) and i would think the 7 VFA clubs a little bit more to the extra players they would need to contract in comparison to AFL clubs, but could be funded if the AFL could sell the TV rights for the league to Foxtel for 11-12 million a year.

I am not sure how much the NRL valued there Toyota cup as it was all packed together in the NRL Tv right deal with state-of-origin, internationals etc.

But i think its the best way to get it done if the sums can be added together. The finances seem to be a massive issue though as i dont think it would be worth 11-12 million a year.

I dont think the ABC could be involved in such a competition, or maybe show 1 game a week with foxtel maybe showing 3.

I think foxtel do 4 toyota cup games a week in the NRL.

want is very different to will get...still at logger heads about this. The WAFL clubs will not give in and rightly so, why should the competitions credibility and sustainability be brought down by mickey mouse reserves sides.

team lists arent big enough to warrant reserves at the moment and therefore who fills in the gaps?? u/18s, the best players from the WAFL? dont think the clubs would be too happy about that...anyway another topic of discussion.

this reserves thing will die down eventually

Selling games is for losers.
Exactly .. the whole idea of the FTF is that we never have to sell home games again .

Kooky talk .

Our aim should be long term to get all our home games at the G.... and to paste the likes of GWS and the Suns by 20 goals there instead of the "upper cumbucta west" runaround we are subject to now.

Once we are truelly established as a genuine power again we will not have to whore ourselves in this manner ever again and rightfully this is our administrations aim

Dude, lets revisit the no brainer again. Your no brain forgot the fact that its not that cut and dried, in terms of selling a home game for 500K and looking at that 500K as something we didnt and wouldnt get.
i.e. home game = ??$$$ -> sold home game = 500K $$ -> club is better off/(you never know maybe -worse off) by 500K $$ - ??$$$

Scratch Tassie, we've missed the boat here unless North of Hawks withdraw which looks highly unlikely given both are going gangbusters. Besides I'm with Iddy, no more selling games. I dont care about the finances or the logistics I just love the thought of seeing our own Ressies play at Punt Rd. I expect every interstate traveller would make his arrangements so he could be there when he lobbed to Melb for an AFL fixture also, am bloody sure I would. If they were played as curtain raisers the London and the Royal would be very empty I bet, why watch ferret and drink when you can drink and watch good footy..lmao. Anything that makes Richmond more Richmond gets my vote.
