Our 'progressive' cocktail party last night was a ball tearer.

4.30pm kick off by the pool. Band playing, food and booze flowing freely.

Moved along to Bruchetta's after that and started a bourbon frenzy.

Slipped the hotel manager a few bucks and he opened up the nightclub (Fraser's) for a private function.

Went mental until about 2. Played a nasty competition (worst shooters). My combo of ouzo & baileys was a stand out.

Then we moved on to remove the contents of our bar fridges and returned to the pool (until the staff finally moved us along).

At some point I must have made it back to the hotel room.

Somehow managed to make it to the 8am conference start. Red Bull & Cherry Ripe for breakfast and we're backing up again tonight for the pr0n Star fancy dress gala ball.

Good questions - anyone report on the specifics of what the coach and pres said?

No. Not many of the players or Dean want to be there, You could see in there body reaction. They were thinking look at all theses nuffs nuffs here who I really dont give a crap about.

Yeah, I bet they would've changed their body language if Reggie from Big Brother was there!

Not sure if the club would be prepared to act, or would be content to do their thinking at the end of the year, and I feel for Dean, as he is a decent person and loves the club, but somehow when it comes to coaches, I am always leaning towards decisive actions, rather than wait for the end of the season no matter what happens.

In any team sport I think what needs to be determined at the time of crisis is whether things could improve under another coach or if the problems run deeper than that, and what would you do if the season ended today. If the answer is, you would change the coach, then my belief is the quicker you do it, the better. Not only would the change work for the supporters as they can see the club is doing something, but a new coach (provided he is the right man for the job) would have a perfect opportunity to see who he wants to work with, and who has to go. Otherwise sometimes it might take a whole year for new coach to work that out.

For example, if Mr X came in for us, at the end of the year, he may keep someone like Harding or Urch, whereas if he was there from round 12 this year, he may have seen first hand their attitude problems (just an example) and not waste his time on them in 2007.

The extra 150k that we would need to pay out on Laidley's contract wouldn't be the end of the club, but dull, uninspiring performances can do a lot more damage.

Could Mr X = Mr. Carey ?

These Cocktail Parties used to be an absolute highlight years back when they held them at Crown and there were something like 2,000 there. I was asking some of the older players and they remember them well and used to enjoy going along to them. They are really one of the rare opportunities the punters get to socialise with the players.

i think u will find that this is another case of $$$$$

Crown have no trouble attracting people to hire there facilities, TD do and i dare say the hire rates reflect this.

What a joy to read this thread has been.

You may be right KangaFett but, surely 2,000 people there (as we used to) versus supposedly 800 last night, can actually make money for the club (extra fundraising on the night plus a greater inclination to re-join in the special member categories that give this night as a value-add)

Look what's happening! Members are tuning out and calling for these nights to be scrapped. It's a sad refelction and can't be good for the club.

Yes members calling for these nights to be scrapped is surely a concern. I wonder if this all comes back to Mr Hargraves or not.....hmm.

2000 people may not necessarily make the night profitable without inflating the price. Hiring the venue is one thing, getting catering is another, staff and bloody insurance etc. - extra numbers isnt necessarily a blessing. You might find they actually needed 2500 people to make it worth while at Crown.

What made Crown so good?

To me it was too big, too many people, I had no idea where the players were (especially back then I wanted to see them as I was a kid getting autographs). We were all standing (not seated like most events at the paladium) and it would cost an arm and a leg to hire!!

I've never been to one but it sounds to me like some people will love it and some people will hate it, no matter what they do. Can't please everyone and trying to have a function for up to 1000 people is a very difficult task to organise.

Good comment. I went and it wasn't a great night but it seems that many on here complaining didn't even go.

Maybe we haven't got 2000 'special' members any more and it certainly isn't worth paying $80 to go, even in its heyday.

Can't report on the last couple of years but I use to go to the Cocktail party and look forward to it each year. That was back in the mid to late nineties.

Now I'd say there are a lot less of the higher type memberships being sold the last couple of years, possibly because one of the big benefits of buying these was the guaranteed GF ticket. Less memberships means less money going towards the cocktail party. Therefore they have to cut back on it, which doesn't make it as appealing to people which in turn means less people go to it or are excited about. Its a downhill spiral.

I think your spot on about not as many people buying special catagory membership. No sign of GF appearance, so no need for special membership.

I thought it was a good night even though I only had one wine due to work commitments this year. Players seemed to be in good spirits and Archer seemed to be swamped like a rock star, and looked to be enjoying himself.

Previous years have been great, all you can drink for 2 hours! I missed not stumbling home and blowing chunks;)

Interesteing read on opinions of cocktail party. I had an email from a friend of mine today telling me she went last night - Gave a fabourable review.

Must admit the parties given at Crown in the early days were rippers from my point of view. HUGE party night - had to take the next day off usually. Glad I'm not missing sooooo much now i've moved from Melbourne.

Conspiracy theories abound. Those who went last year would also know Dean behaved exactly the same way. So suffice to say you're looking in the wrong places for cover-ups and innuendo. Try the X-Files, much more exciting :)

At least it's got Gillian Anderson :D (Homer gurgling noise)
