More timing than anything else. StKildas list was built around the 2000-2003 drafts while Collingwoods was built around the 2005-2007 drafts.
As you will know though the saints drafted very little for half a decade (apologies to Armitage and Steven) in the mid to late 2000's. The pies topped up in the late 2000's with Tarrant, Krak and Jolly. I think you're right the declines might mirror each other a bit but the Pies were never as close to falling off the cliff as you guys and instead of trying for more flags and inching towards the cliff Buckley (rightly or wrongly) pulled the plug very early on their premiership window and have started the rebuild very early. With any half decent coaching they'll be back on the rise and probably should be in the 8 in 2017. The next 24 months could be interesting though.

We started replacing players but it ran neck and neck with heavily compromised drafts. Meaning we only had the chance to get into the draftat around pick 30 odd. Remember Thomas and Pendle where 2005 draft while Riewoldt and Goddard where 2000-2003.

Not talking about that, talking about the self destruction of your club over the last 5-8 years due to shocking list management. Most people could see it coming a mile away. The staggering thing about St Kilda is that you'd think after 100 years of mediocrity they'd learn something. Yet we're saying the same mistakes over again which now see them dead on the bottom of the ladder. Furthermore, I find the whole Pelchin thing unbelievable, why would you wait a whole season to move him on after the debacle of last season.

The whinging you get from these little clubs about equalization is nonsense. St Kilda have been uncompetitive for longer than a century, imposing equalization measures will change nothing other than furthering their addiction to AFL welfare.

The difference between the recruiting programs of both clubs is evident in the fact that St Kilda sit are sitting on the bottom of the ladder for the foreseeable future.

Merely a result of winning the flag and not winning the flag. The Pies were happy to undo their own dynasty with a flag in the bag, Saints would have probably done so earlier with a win in 2009 for example, but without the win kept pushing.

Wow so much rubbish in one short post. Really just throwing anything you can out there hoping something make sense.

I My point is that had they stayed, they probably would have been better players (especially given that Collingwood is a better club than either of the two destinations).

that norm smith should have gone to vossy anyone that watched that game knows that.
as for the brownlow he did have to share his moment of glory with 2 others.
I'll agree he was a decent player but he played for himself before team maybe that's where the hate comes from.
truly great players have premierships. footy is a team sport it's not about individual accolades.
I totally disagree. Michael Jordan didn't win any championships in basketball till the early nineties when he was in his late twenties - was he not truly great before then? Lockett, Skilton, Ablett, Murray, Flower - not truly great? A great player can only do so much for a team. Footy is a team sport, and that goes both ways - a great player cannot carry an average team.

RE the dislike of Buckley, I think it's the lack of charisma. He always seemed driven, upset and arrogant. I don't think it's anything to do with how he played, merely how he came across.

And who he played for.

Thts only notable because Brisbane won three flags. Nobody gives a rats clacker that Jack Dunston left Adelaide. Thats the luck of the draw.
There was a difference though in that Buckley originally refused to be zoned to Brisbane to the point whereas he had an exit clause inserted into a one-year deal, which was unprecedented for a player who had never played AFL before (although he was right to want to leave, to be honest). Gunston wanted a trade home after his first year in Adelaide, which is hardly a unique case. Furthermore, the Bad News Bears were a sympathy-inducing basket case. Adelaide, meh, it's Adelaide.
