It is with mixed feelings that I announce I will complete my three-year term as President of the Collingwood Football Club and will not seek re-election at the upcoming AGM to be held on December 16 this year.

Over the past few years, we have done an extraordinary amount of work together at Collingwood, and I am grateful to have been able to play a role in our Club’s achievements on and off the field.

Our Club is in a very strong position, and the focus of all at Collingwood remains steadfast on continuous improvement as we build towards our next AFL Premiership and our first-ever AFLW Premiership.

I want to thank the Magpie Army – your loyalty sees our Club continue to break records for attendances and memberships year-on-year.

It was a promise I made on my election that we achieve 100,000 Members for the first time in our history and your incredible support has seen us well surpass that. Our Club’s off-field success has reflected our on-field aspirations, and I know that we have set the foundation for sustained success on all fronts.

I do want to assure you I am healthy and in remission from my cancer diagnosis last year, but as you would understand, the demands of being President are significant and carry a heavy responsibility and workload. I do need some more time to devote to maintaining my health and I am confident that the next President will bring their own style and lead the Club admirably and with great distinction.

Some highlights for me over the past three years include the talent we have bought into and those we have developed within our Club, the winning culture we have created, the completion of our industry-leading $15 million redevelopment of our facilities, establishing stronger working relationships with the AFL and other Clubs and playing a key role in leading initiatives relating to concussion to make our game safer for our players…and of course, our magnificent Premiership victory in 2023.

As a Club, we have been able to implement all 18 recommendations of the Do Better report and I am so pleased with our efforts in our Magpie Nest and community housing programs. I know our Club will continue to ensure that serving the community remains a fundamental part of our DNA as we strive for more Premiership success on the field.

With the full support of the Board, we have navigated what I have described as an unlucky year for Collingwood in 2024 —where the competition has never been more even and we unfortunately experienced an horrific run of injuries to our gallant players, something we cannot control.

I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together during my time as President and the memories we have created over the past three years will live on forever.

My wish for Collingwood is that it continues to be bold and evolve, blending the art and increasing proportion of science in football, to climb to the top of the mountain and relish in and maintain the view from there.

I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our Board for their hard work and unity, the administration for their skill, dedication and tireless efforts, the playing groups — men’s, women’s and wheelchair teams — who continue to inspire us all, the coaching teams for their strategic brilliance, application and practical skill, and our critically important corporate partners, all of whom have renewed their commitments this year, setting us up so well for the future.

As I step away, I do so knowing that the Club is in a very healthy position – a much better position to that I found at the beginning of my journey, and I look forward to being in the stands at the MCG and Victoria Park and barracking with you, side by side, for our continued success.

My heartfelt thanks to every single Member and supporter for your unwavering support – the confidence you showed in me, and for allowing me this great honour and privilege of serving our mighty Club.

Floreat Pica.

I know there’s reasons behind everything but on the surface it sure is odd that both our very successful Football Manager and President want to leave after only 3 seasons at the club that include a Premiership

There is nothing odd about Browne stepping down whatsoever.

Browne always said he would be a short term president, was never for the long haul. He didn't believe in long term. So this makes sense.
It took a lot to get him into that president position, A lot of drama. But got us to where we needed to get to. Got a flag from it.

Thank you for your service, Jeff.

Stepped up to the role when leadership was required after Eddie’s departure. He played a pivotal role to our 2023 success so for that he deserves our gratitude.

Best wishes for the future, particularly on the health front.

In hindsight we could have had a succession plan to vote Kelly into the President role and put Wrighty into the CEO role.

President is an unpaid part time governance / ceremonial gig.

CEO is a highly paid full time all consuming gig.

The roles require very different skill sets.

Again, read my post one more time

I said I know theres reasons for everything

I just said on the surface. Like if you knew no more details, on the surface it looks strange. It seems odd.

It’s not something you’d normally see

Why would this have been preferable? Not sure Kelly would have even wanted that

Obviously would be in discussions to see if Kelly would want the role, but with all the mess around the Wright situation, maybe better conversations could have been had in regards to a succession plan with Jeff moving on, and Jeff stepping down was always going to happen considering his own health battles...

What is the point you're trying to make? If someone was uninformed, things would appear a way they are not? What are we supposed to do with this?

I k ow I wanted Eddie gone for a decent chunk towards the end of his time at the club, but thinking on it more, I don’t think I’d be completely opposed to having Ed back

Maybe the break has freshened him up and given him some perspective on things relating to Collingwood

I also feel he’d be better placed to keep Ned under control

I very much doubt I happens. Just saying I don’t think I’d be opposed to it like I once would have been

Listening to him in the media, I doubt he'll ever change

That chapter has come and gone. I don't have any desire to see Ed back in the role.

Well Jeff Browne is going through a cancer battle, so l think his health is of the utmost importance right now

Fair enough

I’m sure the vast majority wouldn’t

As much as his judgement got clouded being in the role so long, I guess I have hope the time away cleared his vision a bit

I just always loved Ed’s passion for Collingwood and how fiercely he fought for us

A jet-CEO retiree steps up and becomes President, pretty much because he felt he had to because of the weakness and autocracy of the then Board (shoe horning in not one, but two ineligible Board members) after an atrocious fire-sale through mismanagement. Being older and hitting health issues, he can't give a long service.

Secondly, Wrighty got brought across into said bin fire. Had to deal with someone he potentially considered a bad coach and sack him. Then replace him. Then be in the search of a new coach. Then deal with existing salary cap issues. Then be list manager. Then be negotiator for 2 years. After years and years of similar at Hawthorn. And we're like; "Why was he burnt out"? And most of this happened before Browne even put his feet under the desk.

Normal? No. Unexpected? Not really.

I wouldn't mind that, but we need a footy manager ASAP...
Not sure of the absolute rush. Presuming we don't get one in prior to this year's draft, after that, there ain't much for a footy boss to do until the new year? We have plenty of experienced heads in there for cover atm.
