Collingwood out of Cousins race

Who else would have leaked the information?

A PI would be bound by confidentiality clauses and would have nothing to gain by leaking this sort of information. It sort of takes the 'private' out of being a 'private investigator' if you're running around leaking your activities to the press.

I can't imagine Christine Nixon has any interest in releasing it either.

The lack of a denial by Collingwood on both speaks volumes.

So, in other words, you don't know that it was Collingwood?

The P.I probably didn't leak the info, but it could have been anyone that knew Ben Cousins was being investigated. Associates, Police, whoever.

My point is that no-one knows who leaked the info and unless a statement is made by a Collingwood official, then they didn't leak it.

I think I can confidently say that if Cousins relapsed that surely people wouldn't blame the culture of his new club. There are known risks with picking him up, but if he does act up he gets sacked and there's an end to it. You lose a listed player for the rest of the season. The club will cop a bit of flak for the failed risk, but alternatively Cousins may remain clean and the club will recieve some kudos for their brave call. Collingwood obviously feel they are some way off a flag if they won't take a bit of a risk to improve their list for a couple of years.

No, I'm sure it's just a co-incidence that the Nixon story broke the day after Collingwood spoke to Ricky Nixon.

The initial story breaks that Collingwood is interested -> within hours the story of PI is in the press. (covering their arse)

The story breaks that Collingwood in no longer interested -> within hours the story about Christine Nixon breaks (covering their arse again)

You do the math.

Could just as easily be Nixon (Ricky I mean) leaking the information and trying to soil Collingwoods reputation by implying improper use of Police recources and invasion of privacy, blah blah blah.

Leaks occur everywhere. Its impossible to say who let the story out.

Bottom line, Collingwood did their homework and decided it wasnt worth the risk to draft him.

Yep. Good on 'em. Must be getting expensive and taking up alot of police resources with the draft coming up.
Do the top 3 rated kids have less PI's following them than say the 10th rated as he has all 16 clubs with a chance? There must be a few drug experimenting, joyridin', graffiti vandals amongst them. I hope that all the clubs are talking to all the Police Commisioners just to make sure. We don't want any Careys, Abletts, Milanes, or Cousins playing football. That would bring the standard of the competition down wouldn't it!!!

Assuming the Pies did leak it, what was the alternative?

Call a press conference, say they've met with Nixon and hired a PI and on the basis of that we won't be pursuing Cousins any further? Would put Ben in the sh1t even moreso. Or just announce they are no longer interested in Cousins and give no explanation? From the posts of some Pies fans in this thread I can't see that flying either.

Once they did their due diligence and decided Cousins wasn't for them, they have no responsibility to Ben, only to their own club. Background checks would occur all the time, its only news because it's Ben Cousins and people tend to join the dots based on his prior behaviour - which is Cousins' fault anyway.

IMO if the only risk was that Cousins would re-lapse then Collingwood would be still in the race. Christine Nixon is not the person you talk to if you are concerned with someones health, there must be other reasons why you would.

Maybe to muddy the waters so as to appease the clubs supporters as to why they have yet again failed to land a big name. We dont want him and his problems looks a lot better to the clubs fanbase than we couldn't get him.

Why have Nixon and co let him have a goal that could very well be shot down, either by the AFL not allowing him back or by his body not standing up to the demands of AFL second time around? Sounds like Ricky is going to put pressure on the AFL to ensure he gets back in, or they'll blame them for derailing his 'recovery'.

Nixon insisted that playing football was a vital element in Cousins' recovery.

"I’m not saying a club has to pick him up, but I certainly think it would go a long way towards his rehabilitation," said Nixon.

"You set yourself goals to get off this stuff and if those goals relate to you playing football and suddenly that’s taken away from you it’s going to make it very very difficult.

"Anyone who’s been involved in drug counselling or has been a drug-taker before, if you suddenly shoot down a goal they’re striving for, it can end in chaos.

"I’ve never met anyone who didn’t like Ben Cousins. I think we all want him fit and healthy."

Gehrig, Milne, Montagna & co would beg to disagree.

Those incidents were all years ago and were on a much lesser scale than the recent Didak/Shaw incidents. Name any player behaviour problems we have had in the past few years?

I wouldn't be cheering too loudly St Kilda fans.

Collingwood obviously checked things out and found something that they really didn't like.

Collingwood checking like that is a bit grubby, but it's reasonable that they looked before spending big $'s on a player with his history.

The one who really crossed the like was Christine Nixon...Obviously she discussed confidential police information with an outside group for an unauthorised background check!

Who says the pies actually checked anything out?

This is right out of Eddie's media playbook. They were out of the running, again, for a big name player, so they fabricated this BS about uncovering things they were unhappy about and wouldn't fit their 'culture', so they would appear that they were strong and made a moral decision.

They are, again, deflecting from their in lack of ability to do deals.

As for Christine Nixon, she could be replaced by a bag of briquettes, and no one would notice any difference in skills & ability.

There are fifteen other clubs who could draft Cousins. Most said no off the bat.

At least Collingwood invested deeply into the possibility.

Thank you for your quality input into the discussion and showing a perfect example of why Collingwood's actions are so questionable in the circumstances.
stuff gets leaked all the time just because news hungy ppl (such as those on bigfooty) demand it
so because of hte leak..collingwood should be forced to recruit someone who after many hours of deliberation have concluded is too big a risk?
thats effectively what your saying

it got leaked
we decided we dont want him
how far is an investigation into that going to go?

Yeah I'm sure Eddie & Pert have zero contacts at Channel 9

Christ, are Collingwood supporters making a run for this year's Most Gullible Award?

You can criticise Ed for many things, but underestimating the stupidity of his constituency isn't one of them.

Then they must be fairly thick to be paying him $4 million pa.

McGuire owns & operates McGuire Media. Channel 9 pay the company for his services, that said, he is not an employee of Channel 9. His services are sub contracted.

It would be like a plumber telling his builder that he's now involved in making the decisions to design a house (that is if you believe McGuire has any direct involvement with scheuduling).

I dont have a problem with Collingwoods decision, do have a problem with
Christine Nixon.

Like you said not very good form from someone who is Police Commissioner.
