Nobody picks many Qld boys because 90% of them are tied to northern academies. The only reason we got Beams was because he refused to align himself with GC when they were establishing themselves in preparation to enter the AFL, and Hine had his work cut out convincing him to do that.
He probably doesn’t get enough credit for considering it was helpful in 2010 and vital in this premiership.

It’s really not good for the AFL to have two sides granted access to the sweep of talent across QLD and then into NT in the case of GC. You want it spread throughout the league.

IMO, the AFL and ALL clubs should run the northern academies with players supported to realise their dreams rather than gifted to clubs.
The northern clubs have priority access to these players.
All the other clubs should have the same level of access for their NGA players.
To put resources into developing players then not be able to match a bid until after pick 40 is BS.

This year is crazy getting the 3 top 10 boys through their academy. GC picking players from up there is a good idea and good for the afl though. We don't pick too many QLD boys, Dayne beams, josh thomas, lachie keefe are the only ones I can think of. But the big boy Walter could be pretty handy for us
In days gone past we also got Dale Woodhall, Gav Crosisca and Mal Michael.

It's not a good idea to have all the QLD talent in one basket. If all the kids in Queensland footy end up playing for one of two teams, their ideas become limited and growth stagnates. You need blokes to see footy in another state to develop their understanding. If we're just seeing kids play for those two clubs, are we a national competition or are we states competing against each other in a national team?

Then what's the point of the draft? We've just returned to zoning and choosing who we draft based on postcodes and/or ethnicity. Academies have failed.

I’d love to go back to clubs having under 19’s and developing their own players from their zones.

The punchline with northern academies is that they are designed to get people to play AFL and not League / Union.
We're now at a stage where junior AFL has better participation numbers when compared to rugby in Queensland. NSW is the heartland of rugby so it maybe makes sense but again, rather than isolate the region for two clubs, open it up. Sydney almost had a premiership fed to them last year. Blah blah blah about the money they "invest" - if other clubs had access, they would, too. For people to choose footy over rugby in the Canberra region (GWS territory), footy needs to return to schools (only at one) and they need their own side. Currently, Brumbies and Raiders run Canberra as it's sport-deprived.

I'm pro changing the draft age to older but the clubs need to remain independent. Passionately against draft zones. Zones did not work when we had them.

How much more satisfying would it be if you were also responsible for developing your youth talent. Gives bigger clubs a much needed advantage as well. Bring the kids through from under 16’s through to the senior team. Train them in your system, brilliant.

It would be more satisfying, that's true. It would be good to have a proper set-up for kids so we're not just obsessing over them in their draft year.

Like in the Good Old Days of Footy

I’m not sure there’s any substance to the bolded.

I like teams developing their own player but screw zones.

The academies work for the northern states - GC this year have access to 4 players who would be high draft picks, including 3 who would be top 10 in an uncompromised draft.
They will match any bids for them.
I just think other clubs should have the same rules that apply to the northern academies.
Or better yet, a completely uncompromised draft with no priority picks, compensation picks or academy picks.

Will never happen. That would mean that the afl lose control in manipulating the competition to try and strengthen developing and weaker teams / clubs. Which is literally their sole focus these days….

I hope we have a state league tall defender we're tracking. We're light on for depth back there.

I get the feeling Begg is going to be playing as a KPD next year in the VFL. I believe he was playing there in match sim during the finals and perhaps explains the Lycett interest. It would mean we would have the below 3 as KPD depth:

Frampton / Dean / Begg

They're trying to create a supporter base for the Northern clubs. Kids into footy train in the Gold Coast academy - more and more of the AFL fans up there will support gold coast. And more and more will be converted to afl. The local players playing for gold coast is all part of it - friends, family, schools all come along for the ride - importantly the ride is with Gold Coast and not with Freo or wherever the kid might get drafted to.

Yep. A club like Gold Coast crying out for blokes to build culture thought this absolute gem of a human wasn't worth a list spot
Was so weird to see some on here prior to his signing with us claiming that Markov was a poor human who had a risk of bringing a drug culture into the club.

Begg is years away if he's gonna play defence, not even ready to be depth.

Some people making assumptions on the way he looks. Although I don't remember a lot of it.
More that he's not likely to make it..
