Surely we're not chasing McStay, couldn't think of a worse target. That would be another monumental fu** up. What is it with CFC and ordinary key forwards
If people on these boards could name a key forward who we could realistically get and wouldn't cost the house and land package, that would be great. Geelong got Jeremy Cameron because they are sponsored by Simmons so could afford it at mates' rates. But we're not getting a star anytime soon. Max King, Ben King - dreaming.

It depends if we've paid off all the payments we pushed into the future yet. Our current list structure would be a saving model with so many kids on small wages.

All the good ones are locked away now and I think it’s a false economy trying to lure one from another club. Costs too much, both salary and picks wise.

I think you trade for a young defender, someone like Payne at Brisbane who, like Kreuger, is behind quality. Edwards at WCE is another.

You then have to use our first pick, presumably in the 6-12 range in a key forward and a no1 key forward. 195cm+ that doesn’t shy away from contact and pair them up with Kreuger, Johnson, Henry with Checkers also in the shorter term.

I’m neither a yay or nay on McStay, but what I would say is that he is what he is as a KPF. He’s never going to be the main draw card and I don’t think he does all that much with the “easy” matchup (although we haven’t seen much of him behind Daniher, Hipwood and Cameron). Is chasing a 1 maybe 1.5 goal a game forward what we need right now? I don’t think so personally.

Like others I think he seems a better fit as a KPD and the biggest factor for me would be the confidence it must mean we have in either retaining JDG or our ability to work a positive trade if he leaves. Both of which are looking better outcomes than band 1 compensation at the present moment.

FWIW I’d be chasing Rayner.

I quite like Payne, as a lockdown defender to play on the monsters. He is very good one on one, and has scope to get even better. He’d be a good Roughie replacement.

But I doubt the lions let him go, even though he is struggling to get a proper look in.

Particularly given he is only 22 and contracted until the end of 2024.

I don't think contracted players are off limits if they aren't getting games and can be convinced to leave for opportunities. You just need to get a deal done.

That doesn’t mean we should satisfy ourselves with second best. Mcstay at 27 is the wrong age group for a player who has been a good ordinary footballer so far and not much different in age or talent to what we already have. I’d rather invest in 22 year olds like Kreuger for example.

Converse argument to that is mcstay is finally starting to play to his potential and also he’s pretty durable. But still a risk in my opinion that he won’t actually improve us.

I recall reading that we should be free of those payments this year.

I’m fine if we do this but we need to be proactive and get the one we want
No sitting back and hoping a good one slides to our pick
Trade to get the pick required to get the player we want.
Otherwise, use the same strategy to trade in a potential young gun

I'm not as worried as everyone else about tapering off because we already have a developing youth core. Even with our heavy young talent that will nautrally have to be traded or delisted (you just can't have 10 kids the same age on a list), we can bring in and develop it. We drafted really well in 2020 and it appears we've also pulled in some good talent in 2021. If we recruit some cheap players to fill the gaps left or players on the selection squeeze or raid the state leagues, we should be fine. I don't for a moment think Wrighty has not planned something.

Wouldn’t that be more reason to target someone over 25, we’ll need the experience to help guide a young list after senior players retire?
If we can find some cheap top old older players sure. I’m talking about throwing money at older players who will be 30 by time we challenging. I don’t think we should. Discussion was on a player like mcstay, who would likely take a bit to lure. He’s 27 soon. I’d only be throwing money at players who can give us longevity. Sure some players do well after 30, but most do slow down and miss a lot of footy. I want players hitting their peak when we challenge, not ending their peak which is usually between 26/7-30.

That's fair enough but you don't chase someone like Mcstay and offer them big money just for the sake of having a KF. He's ****ing useless, we're better off at the draft

I’m told at the end of 2022 after contracting JDG and others that we will have $850-900k cap space for 2023.
If correct it lends well to a RFA target or trade.
If true, and if we continue to go alright this year, it'll be an interesting decision about whether to load up or whether to bank the savings for a tilt in a few years.

It'd likely be Sidey, Crisp and Adams who are currently being back paid. So when their contracts end we should be clear, unless we had to push more into the future on more recent contracts.

Sidebottoms contract ends this year, Crisps in 2023, and Adams 2024. That means only Crisps and Adams are relevant for next year. I haven't heard that Crisps or Adams were backloaded but even if they were I doubt two contracts will make too much difference.

I haven't heard either regarding Adams and Crisp, but they were signed up to long contracts when we were in the height of trying to keep the list together with a really tight cap, so it's likely that money would have been deferred.

Hopefully we are no longer paying for treloar or at least have frontloaded the large bulk of that subsidy.

There's not a lot left in the free agency market this year. Teams have gotten savvy about locking players away. There's Sicily, Brayshaw, Amon, Dale and Daniel that may be of interest and we've been linked to McStay. I wonder if we target out of contract players or wait until next year.
