Adrian Fletcher's son is in the draft as well. I think I heard Cal Twomey say he's a possible late first rounder.

Twomey also pointed out that Gold Coast have a massive bag of picks (including our 2nd, 3rd, 4th) that Brisbane will likely target for points.
Just checked GC have so much more to offer than we do unless we throw in a good player. So no need to continue to talk about that as a possibility

I'd be interested to know what Logue would command salary wise, because you'd have to say he's equal to McStay or perhaps has even more potential, depending how you plan to play him.

Being a WA boy I just assumed Logue would take unders to stay at Fremantle. And if he moved I'd give WCE a chance before anyone else.

Putting 2 and 2 together you'd have to say Fremantle are willing to drop Logue in order to get Jackson.

I'm curious as to whether Melbourne would take (or could afford) Logue in a trade given they also have the likes of Brayshaw unsigned.

Someone's falling out of the tree there, as far as Brayshaw or Logue go.

Can we somehow get involved for one of the two?

We were linked to Logue a month or so back.

Everyone here I think is underestimating Mcstay and how the scope of footy has changed since free agency was introduced. What deal do you think we are capable of getting Mcstay on? Brisbane have already offered him 600 over 3 years. Everybody's value is inflated now because of offers coming in so the days of getting anyone cheap are gone.

There are rumours McStay was offered 450k for 3 also. It's hard to know the truth.

I like any player who gives their heart and soul to the club.

The Madge does that.

Exactly. I like em all, even the ones who might have gone harder, like Sier.

Calling players list cloggers is pretty disrespectful. There will always be blokes at the bottom end of a list providing depth. Someone like Madge has actually done his job a few times this year.

Will he get his 50th?

This isn’t a “gives their heart and soul thread” its a list management thread. Unfortunately Madge et al are list cloggers regardless of the size of their heart. Not sure about VFL captaincy, but I would fully endorse retaining Madge in some capacity at the club as long as it’s not on the AFL list.

Calling a player a spud or vanilla is disrespectful. A list clogger is purely talking the place on the list. At 29 given his skill set and scope for improvement Madgen is literally the textbook definition of a list clogger.

Great build, runs around well - just doesn’t do anything.
Debatable. In game I’d say he’s got close to the worst athletic profile on our list (think Joel Wilkinson) and is undersized by role. I personally can’t think of a single AFL level matchup where I’d feel comfortable in his ability to negate the opposition.

I’d say it’s his communication, competitiveness and durability (the best ability) that have seen him “prosper” where a guy like Wilson has faltered (by comparison).

Then pay more & get somebody better. We don't have to recruit just because they are cheap. If you continually recruit average players then guess what the list will look like? Yep that's right (average) We need to inject some more skill & class into the squad & improve it. Is he better than Mihocek? I'd say definitely not. So if he isn't freeing up Mihocek to get the 2nd best defender instead of the best, then what is the point of pissing away 600k a year?

Then maybe the best course of action is, I dunno, not getting McStay?

I'm sorry but the argument of "that's what it costs to get a free agent" doesn't convince me that McStay is the one worth meeting that cost for.

Would have to be to help Mihocek. Dont think we would take him if he was going to cost us through a trade. I am hoping he will turn out to be better than average for us, 600 is a bit overs but it is more the 5 years that concerns me

I hope so.
Trading out top end talent doesn‘t normally achieve success.
Holding talent & building via Draft & Free Agency is the go.

Agreed.

Take our 1st pick to the draft and pick up the best available KPF.
Use our 3rd round picks to try and upgrade with a side who may be keen on offloading their 1st (ala Brisbane). If there is a suitable trade option available at that price point then we go for it. If not take to the draft.

Use free agency if cap space permits.

I'm personally a big fan of the trade floated a couple of pages back that ultimately was:

IN: Taranto, Hill, McStay, 1x second rounder, 2x first rounders

OUT: 1x first rounder, De Goey, 2-3x third rounders

to be fair hes been serviceable depth, and with others coming on we dont need him going forward
a list clogger to me is someone who you persist with longer than you should, and they never really come on or provide great depth. ill let you draw your own conclusions without pointing fingers ;)

do you mean Joe Wilkinson!!?? I thought Joel Wilkinson was pretty athletic

Disagree. It's semantics, but I see list clogger as a derogatory term. There will always be the last few on a list, those in their last year on a list. Most still have a role to play. Madgen for instance, he fulfilled his role when we needed him.

High level I agree with what constitutes a list clogger where I differ is the belief he’s been serviceable. IMO, he hasn’t played a good game for a couple of years. He’s been “depth” in the same way Blair would be if he were on the list still and he should have been cut last year (perhaps even when Scharenberg was).

I don’t and don’t class it semantics 🤷‍♂️

I do agree there always will be guys in their last year on the list. Madgen’s was last year and in 2022 at 29 he tipped into clogger territory.

Immensely athletic. Perhaps even one of the greatest athletes the game has seen. In game though his athletic profile completely disappeared.

A real life example of the reverse would be Grundy. He’s a “poor” athlete by AFL standards in terms of running capacity. Against a guy like Lynch (who has a tremendous athletic profile) he would struggle on paper, but you have the two of them bang and crash for two hrs and I guarantee Grundy will run harder for longer to better spots.

I'd much rather look for a key forward than another mid size in McStay.

I'd also prefer that Henry and Johnson get games behind Mihocek, Cameron and Grundy/Cox in the F50.

McStay is mid-size? 196cms and ~100kgs is what I remember him being listed at.

Perhaps he’s talking wing span? I’ve always felt McStay has short arms not Rich level, but not Cox level. Max King for instance isn’t dangerous because he’s 204cm he’s dangerous because he can jump and has a wingspan that allows him to mark the ball above 3 metres from the ground. Good luck spoiling that Madge 😂
