In some ways I am disappointed and other ways I am not.

Stengle has already had more chances than most. Perhaps not the right fit for what we are trying to build. Maybe there is a kid perhaps less heralded but more hungry and we will recruit him.

Alternatively maybe Lipinski is coming through PSD? Is that how we were going to recruit Stengle?
Maybe we are going to get Patrick Naish instead.

Yeah we only get as many live picks as we have available list spots pre draft. So if we end trade period with 7 picks and we only have 5 list spots then we’d lose our last two picks.

So given the AFL senior list size is between 36 and 38 …

… if we go into the draft with 32 players already on our senior list, does that mean we go into the draft with 6 picks, but can come out of it with only four players?

… or alternatively come out of it with only two players, but promote Keane and Noble to the senior list?

This is from the age article. Not sure which fox article it is included.

" The Cats and Essendon are keen on Stengle after Collingwood withdrew from the race for the 22-year-old former Crow and Tiger. Stengle played in a premiership for Woodville-West Torrens in the SANFL on Sunday. "
If Craig McRae coached him at Richmond, he'd know if he was worth recruiting. He's too young for Geelong so the only logical club is Essendon.

It’s the tiered nature of the top end. There’s brackets within brackets with a standout top 4 (JHF, Darcy, Daicos and Callaghan) and a second rung (Gibcus, Hobbs and Ward) then it evens out so clubs aren’t willing to trade out of one bracket into another. I’m with you BTW and there’s value to be had there!
Clubs do it later in the draft with in-draft trading, 3rd rounder for a couple of pick downgrade, but not yet at the top end of the draft. If we were pick 3, how much would we have paid North to have access to Mcdonald - and they still would have got their man - they may have seen a big gap and not been willing to do it, but sometimes they'd be really split on who to select, whilst the team below is adamant.

Lipinski has a really interesting skillset that doesn't seem to fit into any role perfectly.

Too slow for wing/HBF, too weak for inside mid.

Will be interesting to see how we utilize him. Sometimes it's okay to carry a skillful type at centre bounces (J Kelly, K Amon, etc.), but the player needs to be supported by hard, contested inside mids like Hopper, Green (for Kelly) or Wines, Drew (for Amon).

I just don't think we can play Lipinski with the likes of J Daicos/N Daicos/F Macrae at centre bounces, there's not enough defensive pressure and we are going to get crushed in the middle.

There's probably only a maximum of 2 spots (1 of which starts on the bench) for that offensive/skillful midfield role at centre bounces, think both Daicos brothers and Macrae have more scope for growth in that role.

I'm not against picking up Lipinski for cheap, but the condition is that we really can't give up anything close to a 2nd round pick.

Vanilla mids like Lipinski have always struggled. I think Lipinski's best bet is to become a Lachie Whitfield type running wing/HBF distributor role on the outside, that exploits his precise kicking ability.

Great to hear Eddie Betts and Jetta have joined the coaching ranks. Such a smart move by the AFL to put indigenous blokes outside the soft cap. Affirmative action where noone loses out.

And great that we got a bloke who would have been highly rated and sought after. Neville must think we're doing better!

I think Nev will be great for our young blokes.

Stengle would have been strictly a rookie or SSP selection.

I would love to see the pies go after Brander as well. I think that he and Krueger give us a lot of flexibility to go forward with KPP. With Lynch going out, surely we could get enough to be able to make a swap for Brander.

I would recommend that we wait and actually see him in action before casting any judgements as to what qualities he may or may not bring to our midfield mix. Some of the tape I've seen of Lipinski doesn't exactly line up with the soft / slow assessment of him.

Don't be surprised if the deal that gets done either ends up being pick 55 or pick 58, nothing more. A second round pick was never in play as Power was just talking out of his arse.

Lipinski being offered a fu**en 3 yr deal re.. that's a classic Nottage Hill Chardonnay moment I reckon and that re sort of a thing.. it's nota.. it's nota.... I know.. I know.. it's notaaaa.

Ti leeeessss re 3 yrs re. Ti leeeessss re 3 yrs re.

You doing your best Farmer Fran impression there Gimp??? o_O

Still think it's not too late for Brander, Gunston took awhile to develop as well.

He can't be worse than anyone after top 50 in the draft can he?... PSD him on a rookie salary/contract I reckon.

Problem with Brander is the squeeze we have now on vacant senior list spots - we might not have room for him if we're going to use 5-6 draft picks to match a bid on Daicos. If we can condense those picks a bit then yeah maybe we have a swing on Brander as I think he could play a role as a roaming CHF type. The other question now is how that meshes with Kreuger, who seems to be a similar roaming CHF type.

Gunston kicked 19 goals from 12 games in his second year and 39 from 19 in his 3rd year. Sorry, but a tall who started kicking 2 goals a game in year 3 isn’t someone who took a while to develop, and he’s the polar opposite of Brander, who after 4 years in the system is yet to even establish a senior spot, or even a best position on the field.

Lipinski too slow for the wing? Mayne, J Daicos, Sidey and Nathan Murphy have all played on the wing. Pullman must move like a glacier!🙄

And how have these guys gone lol, just because Mayne and Murphy have played on the wing it doesn't mean they are good in that role. It just shows how clueless our coaching staff has been.

There are exceptions - Sidey, Gaff, etc. But you absolutely need everything else to go right for you as a slow wingman.
