I really need to sit down and watch an entire VFL game because the only time I can recall seeing Kelly he has been taking marks like he's Ben Reid.

Is he not starting to hit some sort of form? Or am I just tuning in to see his highlights?
Thought he was pretty good against Carlscum last Saturday. Took several contested marks etc..

No, soccer isn't warped like the US sports - players have to agree to a transfer.
Didn't realise that! Interesting.

I think in the NBA there are less than a handful of contracts with 'no-trade clauses'. Giving them the power to say no. They really epitomise the sport as business model.

If Richmond are looking likely to land Taranto, that would be the most awkward conversation for Kingsley to have if he's to try and ask him his intentions.
I was at the footy with my neice among others on Sunday. She is from Syney and good mates with Tarantos GF. Taranto told her he has very similar offers from us and Rich but was likely going Richmond. She was texting.him during the game saying dont you want to be part of this.
He just laughed back.

By world sport, you only mean American sport - where players are paid ridiculously high amounts, but are also treated like cattle who are owned and sold by clubs. It annoys me that people cite the twisted philosophy in American sports, as though it is somehow normal and right.
Maybe also European soccer, where again they are making immense amounts of money.
Soccer, even at lower levels in Europe (it's still as professional as the AFL, just less attention directed to it) where the money is not as pronounced, contracts are executed far more ruthlessly than in the AFL. Cricket players find themselves tossed out in T20 leagues for less.

In America, equivalent VFL players aren't paid well at all, either. Minor League Baseball pays an atrocious wage and players are offered far less protection than in the AFL. The NFL has a practice squad - again, you're not rich if you do your ACL and are placed in that. Most players are just cut and offered two weeks' payout. For those developing, the practice squad pays a decent wage but again, it's not a lot more than the AFL. If you come into the seniors, the pay goes up but then drops down. The NBA's G League deal isn't much better although it varies on a case-by-case basis. Players are of course promoted and earn a healthy pay cheque for the game but nothing is guaranteed.

AFL players don't realise how lucky they have it to be GUARANTEED $80,000 (first year rookie eg. Cooper Murley) - $280,000 (Will Kelly salary estimate. There would be others who play VFL on similar coin) regardless of injury.

A week is long time in football.

Damn.

Kingsley flat out lying in his first press conference saying he hasn't yet sat down with McCartney to see where the list is at, in order to avoid talking about Taranto.

How could you take a coaching gig and not know about the list and whether your player is on the way out!

Interesting, this is the first time finance being used and referenced in one of the updates.

Definitely indicates to me of outside interest that has him curious, there’s no way we could be that far out of the ball park for his internal expectations in comparison to the 6-8 good quarters he’s played in 2 years that would lead to a “reasonable way apart”

I think in US sports you can be onsold if you are under contract because the owner of the club has only agreed to guarantee your salary.....I kind of agree with that. If a player doesnt want to risk being sold off, he is less inclined to push for a long term contract.

Australia has much more progressive labour laws than the US, so you can make similar comparisons regarding all professions. But back to the original point, why shouldn't footballers look to work in the city they want to live? Why do you view a bloke's choice to live in a particular city as whinging?

Yes, this. Henry probably wants $300-400k and we're offering $200k. Just guess work but $300k is overs for him. I know he's good but he's still a rookie.

In the men's game, the argument is frustrating. Players leave for the money, women or because they have a sook they don't have all their friends they grew up with interstate and no-one cares about them playing in the AFL. There are a handful of legitimate personal reasons (Tim Kelly is a really good example) and I don't necessarily blame Rankine for leaving to take $800,000 but in too many instances, players use the return to Victoria or SA, WA, etc. They're not the only 18 year olds who have to move to advance their career. I guess what I don't like is how a club drafts a player and he leaves not long after he was drafted because he just wants to go home. It screams of over-entitlement a 20 something nobody, sometimes with no real achievement or anything more than 20 AFL games can walk out the door.

He looks like Harpo Marx with his curly mop of hair.

I’m just speculating but I’d guess ours at least starts with a 3, but maybe he’s got something on the cards with 5.

At the end of the day I think this one gets done, this is just manager negotiation via the media, I refuse to believe he could be that concerned about a small forward and a key forward taking his spot and call BS on that.

Either way, probably an unpopular opinion around here, if he does wanna go I wouldn’t be going to extreme lengths to try and keep him, this is the future now, we’ll get one going the other way and we’ll all move on.

Deliberately vague. He's not a high priority at this stage and if he leaves, then we can find a first rounder with more commitment.

I'm glad you are not in charge of our recruiting dept. Ollie is absolutely high priority. We might get a first-rounder with more commitment but extremely unlikely to get one with that much raw talent.

As for the the report, Bobby Hill keeping Ollie out of the side? Bobby on exposed form would be on the fringe of the VFL side
