Sorry - just saw this continuing discussion.
I don't understand the 'lie' thinking at all.
Seems clear the welcome to country is an incredibly gracious effort to find a better way forward. That it's considered divisive is just weak as piss, I reckon.

You guys need to open up a dictionary once in a while. A lie: used with reference to a situation involving deception or founded on a mistaken impression. It is 100% a mistaken impression it was made up by Ernie dingo and his studio as a once off ceremony for an event. It was never done before this to welcome anyone to land and is still not done in traditional aboriginal communities I attend. It is not traditional and nothing more then virtual signalling. It is divisive because it is them welcoming us that's the whole point of it. Pretty much the meaning of divisive aswell them and us what happened to being together and closing the gap??

That's not the only thing it would make me do quicker, lol

When I go fishing with my 'Mum' (not my Mum in the non-Aboriginal way) Miriam Rose up on the Daly, she will send the kids in to collect the Magpie Geese that have been shot. She will watch the river and call the kids in when she knows a croc is approaching. No one else can see it, she reads the land with almost a sense of magic. The Daly has that many crocs it is ridiculous but none of the mob are ever hurt. At the fish hole the kids are catching Barra out of the trees which most people would pay big money to do. I know the land pretty well but am a rook compared to Mum Miriam. You can't teach what she knows.

It's pretty amazing when you think about it. Almost every year, non-indigenous fishos go up to the NT to chase barra and one poor bloke seems to get taken most years. They have no idea where they pop up from.

Welcome to Country is delivered by Traditional Owners. True, it isn’t always an Elder, but for events like the Grand Final, it is.

It is not a lie. To say so, is racist.

Jeez you keep changing the story, now we are talking about the grand final. You have been proven wrong stop moving the goal posts. Since when was calling anything a lie suddenly a racist statement? And don't say it implies certain individuals because we have already covered that it doesn't. It is a fact about the act of welcome to country.

Never fish in the same place in croc waters. They will learn your habits and wait and watch and then bang. Have to stay unpredictable.

Not far from there I believe mate. Due to being a Stolen One they have never been able to pinpoint my precise mob (there was no record of my birth). We know it is NT, we know it is a river, we know it was croc filled because I remember Mum teaching me about them as a kid. We know the rough area. We have tried to retrace some of the steps I remember but gee it was a long time ago. Nauiyu is my adapted Mob. Miriam took me into her family and I house all her Grandkids when they come to school in Melb. Maybe somewhere near Peppi they believe I was from.

Miriam sounds a beautiful lady, you are fortunate there. And beautiful country where you are broadly from.

I know it a little, spent a fair few years that way, many years ago now

The pink eyes, covering the daly river, when a light is directed.

Hope you find out more re place and family

She is the most incredible lady you will ever meet. The wisest person I know and most importantly a big Pies fan. Her hubby Ken is Lions. You are blessed to spend time up there mate, beautiful part of the world. Thanks mate, I think the horse may have bolted on finding the exact location. My Foster parents were unbelievable and put so much money, time and resources into finding out. We found out lots but still a bit missing. I can retrace my steps form the hell camps to Darwin Long Grass camps (was only about 5 or 6) but my memory is fading before that. I have my people and a very special bond to Wemba Wemba up Swan Hill way as well.

There was over 200 different Aboriginal languages and thus over 200 different cultures. Acknowledgement of country is purely a modern tradition. Welcome to country is also a modern tradition that includes some ancient rituals that acknowledge ancient culture. They're not a lie. It's impossible to have rituals that are identical to the ancient rituals of all these different cultural groups, so we've gone with one modern tradition with hallmarks of the past.

Sooo in other words its a Mistaken impression: a faulty or incorrect impression. We are back to the definition of lie.

It's not a lie at all, unless youre thick. Who watches a Welcome to country and thinks this is exactly how it's been done in all these different Aboriginal cultures for thousands of years? Of course it's a mixture of modern with some ancient elements drawn from some Aboriginal cultures. Who has this mistaken impression?

Ok so you watch it and see a modern choreographed ceremony with some parts of 200 real cultures thrown into it? That's what I see aswell, So is it made up modern or traditional that is a incorrect impression? It's not a who but a what has this mistaken impression.

Yeah but, debate ive had for years. Ive got a reasonable sized dam. Never introduced fish, about 3 years ago fish appeared, see them splashing, some die. How did they get there. Ive been presented with the wildest theories, still dont understand how
The most common theory is that when birds go from waterways to pond's etc. That they get fish eggs on their feet and when they go to the pond's etc, the eggs get transferred to the pond's. I know this is common with redfin and that's why a lot of estate pond's and private dams end up with fish in them.

All traditions and rituals were made up and change over time. A modern ritual from ancient sentiment and rituals. I like it. You may not, but it's far from a lie.

Bro, easy solution for you is to play candy crush during the ceremony. No one's asking you to join in or participate. Regardless of your understanding, it's become important to indigenous people and doesn't take more than a couple of minutes of your time. It's no different than if you walked into a church and told them everything you believe in is a lie. Life's pretty cool when you just let people do what they believe in as long as no one is getting hurt.
