Others must have seen something in Scott I missed

Looked totally off it to my eye. Be an awful selection
I honestly don’t think he put a foot wrong, I wouldn’t pick him. Seems like okay depth but depths not really needed right now, but to say he looked totally off it is a bit of a stretch. Would be HF depth for mine.

Cavarras probably the most hard done by in the squad I feel. He’s had **** all opportunity, plays a position of need. Has actually done alright in the AFL in the very brief we’ve seen of him. Constantly one of the best in the VFL and we know he’s a seriously dedicated dude I doubt he’s put a foot wrong at training. But he can’t get a look in for whatever reason. McNiel looks great but he shouldn’t be ahead of him.

This has got me cooked too. Would love to know what he’s doing wrong ? Crazy bevo ..

Having just watched the Melb game again, id go with;

Duryea Keath Khamis
Williams Gardner Daniel

B.Smith Bont Hunter
Martin Macrae Libba

Lipinski English Dunkley
Wallis Bruce West

Treloar Scott Dale ......(suspect the last interchange will be either JJ or Richards as extra running depth)

- I'm leaving out Naughton and VDM unless they are 100%. With the rule changes, less interchange and 20 min quarters, total fitness will be paramount. Can't afford to risk anyone slightly off.

- As a rule don't want to bring in those who are off the pace and playing 2s or recovering preseason. Making an exception for Duryea as he is the best Crozier replacement. Need that experience and hardness down back. Also Treloar who is such a running machine, experienced pro and will be hugely emotionally invested, so offers too much to leave out.
- Was super impressed with Khamis. Seemed comfortable at the level and his kicking was a treat. Pies have a few mobile, marking midsize forwards so he matches up ok.
- McNeil is a bit stiff. He has llooked a good pick up and versatile, but 3 debutantes at AFL level R1 feels like an unnecessary risk. Scott seems slightly more ready at this point.

Out depth looks really good. A team of those to come back in or fight for spots in the coming weeks looks solid;

Crozier Young Wood
JJ Cordy Richards

VDM Jong Hayes
Sweet McNeil Cavarra

Bedendo Schache Hannan
Weightman Naughton Jamarra

Butler R.Smith Garcia Maclean

He’s ready to go too, has been since we drafted him. Maybe he doesn’t have a huge amount of upside but what you see is what you get, and from the very little we’ve seen I think he’d be comfortable at the level and give it his all

FB: Williams Gardner Duryea
HB: Daniel Keath JJ
C: Lipinski Macrae Smith
HF: Bonti Naughton Dale
FF: West Bruce English
R: Martin Treloar Dunkley
IC: Libba, vandermeer, Wallis, Hunter

I am hoping Crozier comes in for Hunter but that won’t happen this week.... Hunter needs to lower the eyes & kick better. Until he does, I would rather not play him.
Bit harsh he was in our top 3 players last year when he played

Couldn't agree more. Cavarra seems to have the exact chops we're looking for but hasn't been given a solid run at it, really want to see him in the 1's this year.

Williams Keath Duryea
Daniel Gardner Khamis
Hunter Macrae Smith
West Bruce VDM
Wallis Naughton Bont
R: Martin Dunkley Libba
I/C English Treloar Lipinski Dale

Duryea for Crozier is a no brainer, which worries me (Bevo does not do the obvious).
Khamis looked comfortable at the level and is just the type of player we need so would stick with him. If not, I would play Cordy or Butler (HB specialist).

McNeil and Scott sound like they have performed well but one debutant in rd 1 is enough.

Sounds by our injury report on teh WB site that Wood might be ready round 1 so he might play instead of Buku. I'd give him the extra week and play the kid to be on the safe side though because soft tissue with older players have a pretty bad reoccurance rate.

Have we tried Hunter on half back in the practice games at all? He would have been the player I'd have tried there out of our midfielders.

I think Scott is our most likely debutant. He seems to have big wraps on him.
I was thinking that Bevo might be thinking of making a fast/heavy tackling forward line around the two talls. Some mix of Scott/West/McNeil/VDM/Wallis, maybe JJ if he isn't fully forgotten about and probably Treloar until he is fully midfield fit. Try to pressure the opposition into making mistakes in their D50 more.

After Monday’s game this is what I think Bev will do

B: Duryea, Gardner, Khamis
HB: Daniel, Keath, Williams
C: Macrae, Bont, Hunter
HF: Smith, Naughton, Lipinski
F: Wallis, Bruce, English
R: Martin, Treloar, Libba
I: Dunks, Richards/JJ, West, McNeil

If Naughton doesn’t play he will bring Dale in and play shorter but I’ve been told he is ok to go.

He won’t carry VDM if he isn’t 100% so he misses.
Dale played half back and kicked two goals so I can’t see him missing

I'd rather take a risk and play Wood even if not 100%. Nothing against Khamis he looks like he will play at some stage, but we need to get the season off to a good start. Two debutants seems a bridge too far to me.
Wood played probably his best game last season when he returned from injury so you could be right

FB: Khamis - Keath - Williams
HB: Daniel - Gardner - Scott

C: Lipinski - Bontempelli - Smith

HF: Vandermeer - Naughton - Hunter
FF: West - Bruce - Wallis

R: Martin - Treloar - Macrae

I: Dunkley - Liberatore - Dale - English

E: Schache - McNeil - Johannisen - Cordy

If one of Treloar/Vandermeer isn't fit, McNeil comes in. Schache plays if Naughton doesn't get up in time.

No Wood - he never comes back well from an injury and has missed too much of the pre-season. Khamis has earned his shot - I was super impressed by him. Despite already having played a half he was composed and really offered a lot of help defence without compromising his structure.

I don't know why Scott is at half back but he should play regardless of where he is on the field. I never want to see Dale at half back again but going by Bev's presser I should get used to seeing it.

McNeil is close and I love his involvements, but he probably needs to up his volume before he features.
I’m more than happy for our half backs to kick two goals every game I don’t reckon we would lose many

I can see that argument, and wouldn't be mad if Duryea was brought in, but it's worth considering that your question marks have all been rated as tracking better than him throughout the pre-season. Duryea is also not really a help defender, which Crozier is, and I'm loathe to either pull Williams away from a distribution role or leave Gardner and Keath without support in 1v1s.

I don't see Wood as an option, I don't think I've ever seen him play well out of an injury. He needs some time to get the read of the game back.
First game back last year Wood was excellent probably his best I thought

It won't happen but this is the side I'd be choosing.

FB: Williams, Gardiner, Cordy/Duryea,
HB: Daniel, Keath, JJ
C: Smith, Dunkley, Hunter
HF: West, Naughton, Bontempelli
FF: Wallis, Bruce, Cavarra
R: Martin, Treloar, Macrae
Int: Libba, Lipinski, English, Dale

Picking a bunch of first gamers for the first game against Collingwood would be an absolute pisstake, We need as much experience as we can put in our backline so I've selected Cordy (expecting Collingwood to go tall with Cox, Cameron and Mihocek.

JJ probably won't be in Bevs mind (nor Cordy) though and its an absolute indictment on those 2 and others like Richards that we have guys who have barely been at the club for 3 months who seem ahead in the pecking order.

I think Cavarra deserves more opportunity at senior level. Seems like hes a good and regular contributor at VFL level and with a forward line of high flyers we need someone who stays on the ground.
I like Cavarra but he is not playing ahead of McNeil at least not going on form
