THE RIVALRY;:eek:

Just some links to useful information about the true source of the rivalry between these 2 clubs.

My Thoughts;

So finally it's here, the night where Collingwood fans get to officially salute the 2010 AFL Champions, and of all opponents, the AFL give us Carlton, the biggest and most traditional rival we have.

The game itself will be like most Pies vs Blues clashes, fierce, unrelenting and with a large and noisy crowd behind it, making it the first “real blockbuster” of 2011.

Carlton have started the season well, although just like Collingwood, haven't had to raise a sweat against two bottom four sides in Richmond and the woeful Suns, although the Tigers did a little more damage to the blues that most remember. The Pies, with two similar games against sides with no chance of making the finals, have looked 'brutal' at times and at other times looked like they are just 'going through the motions'.

So to the game itself, and their will be a ton of talent on show at the MCG under the Friday night lights, with the defending champs and their bevy of All Australians and 'under rated' contributors playing a side that has had as many low (or high) draft picks as any other team in the competition.

Many say the midfield battle may decide the match, but I don't see that as being the case, neither side will be completely dominant in the contested possession stakes, it is the pressure both forward lines place on the backs of their opponents when they have the ball that may be the difference here, and that's where the Pies excel.

Expect the game to be a smashmouth affair early on, with plenty of close in contests, and a heap of physical contests, both on and off the ball. But once the game settles, Collingwood's midfield and all around depth should be the deciding factor, just like it is most weeks.

Plenty of so called experts still under rate the likes of Toovey, Blair, Wellingham (below), Reid, Ball and Krakouer, but they are as good of a '2nd tiered' players as exists in the AFL today, and that will ultimately be the difference.

Two Matchups I want to see;:confused:

WELLINGHAM VS JUDD;
Some may say Ben Johnson should go to Judd, but Wellingham has restricted Carlton's best player in the past, and can also hurt him going the other way, where as we actually need BJ down back this week against the Carlton small forwards.

KRAKOUER VS YARRAN;

If there's still one concern I have over Krakouer and his ability to maintain his place in the best 22 at Collingwood, it's the defensive side of his game, and playing on a player who is “stoppable” like Yarran (as the Tigers showed in round 1) might be the perfect matchup for Krak to show us, and the club what he can do when given a forward defensive role.

Player Focus;

NICK MAXWELL:D:D

maxy1-1.jpg

The Premiership Captain returns, after over a month out after the big hit he suffered in Perth in the NAB Cup semi, and he will be rearing to go. We need him down back, he just gives out such great assistance to all our backline players, and of course is the “general” down back, directing traffic, something that Heath Shaw needs a few lessons on (if anyone has seen Heath 'going off', you know what I mean).

It's pure coincidence that he returns for the flag unfurling match, but it is a nice little extra, as the picture taken in todays' Herald Sun (see below) shows our 4 living premiership captains all together, and having Maxwell out their playing tomorrow night is significant in so many ways.

Nick lifted his personal game to another level last season, culminating in the 'personal achievement' of being nominated then selected in the All Australian team, an honour that is astounding given that he was rejected so often as a youngster, and even constantly criticised by some of the Pies faithful in his first few seasons with the club.

Nick personifies this team, he has come from nowhere (like most), he was never supposed to be a star, and has always been under rated by those supposedly in the know, yet he has developed into the best backline assistance player in the AFL bar none.

I will be just glad to see the great number five Black and White jumper running around again, that number holds so much history at our club, and it's fitting that finally it held up a premiership cup after so long.

Tip;

Back to the game, and I just can't see Carlton winning. I actually see their 'easy' draw as a positive for Collingwood, as Carlton simply won't know what has hit them, and by the time they adjust, it may well be too late. When this Collingwood team is 'on', it produces an intense, all around four quarter effort, especially against better opposition, and I can see the side taking another step forward, and improving again on their output from the first 2 games. The “ins” for the Pies should make a large difference also, as they are 2 absolutely quality All Australian players, as Carlton bring in a Richmond reject and a solid defender.
Collingwood will run away with this game late, and the result won't be much different to the 8 and 9 goal defeats the Pies handed Carlton last season.

FLAG UNFURLING

Hardly needs a mention, but from 7pm on tomorrow night, the unfurling of the 2010 AFL Premiership flag will take place at the MCG before the big game. If you can possibly be there, BE THERE.

VFL

After a great first up win, the Collingwood VFL boys venture out to Princes Park for a match against Carlton's VFL aligned side, the Northen Bullants.

BLACK AND WHITE SHOW.

For anyone who hasn't seen in it, Michael Christian and Paul Licuiria did their first episode of what they hope will be a weekly “Collingwood centred” show, it's well worth a look.

Didak will explode tommorow night boys and girls bookmark it!!!!
4th game in (including nab cup gf) he is the x-factor he will go close to B.O.G

Did anyone see what they're doing to the G tommorrow night on the Footy show? Looks fantastic, they're really going all out.

Wonder when was the last time that a team was $4 to win, the week after thrashing a team by 100+ points.

I have a feeling tonights match will follow a similar line to the game last year where we were leading by several goals at half time, Carlton comes backin the 3rd and then we end up kicking away in the final qtr.

If he fires then Carlton simply has no chance. He's been in 4th and 5th gears getting some game time into his legs and a feel for the ball. If he steps his game up I can't see them holding Swan, Pendelbury, Didak and Ball.

I hope they play Didak more forward this year. He's still close to the best shot at goal in the league and with our depth of midfield he might find himself on the end of a few Scotty daggers!

It is great to have the spotlight back on the only 2 teams that really matter in the AFL
Enjoy unfurling the flag-you deserve to celebrate after a great 2010
Lets hope the game does live up to the hype of a blockbuster and Carton can put in a solid performance against an obviously awesome side Eddie/Mick have built.
Collingwood are favourites for a reason and it is a tall ask to get any where near you but the challenge is there for the Blues tonight
Enjoy the night and may the best team win

I agree, although I'd probably add that it's also good that Essendon seem to be "coming good" also.

Matches between the Pies, Blues or Bombers just have a different feeling to them, and it's not only the fact that you are guaranteed a big crowd, and for both teams to bring their "A game", but it's the history and passion from the supporters that sets these games apart.

I love playing Carlton more then Essendon though, it's the biggest rivalry we have, and for the game to mean so much, even early in the season, just creates such a mouth watering possibility for tonight.

Plus, I think most Collingwood fans have been waiting for this also, our first real test of 2011, just to see how well we are traveling early in the season.

Should be a cracking match, there won't be any holding back here, from players or supporters.:D

The coverage in Canada was changed to our game today!!

I am pumped now as it is live so coverage starts at 6.30am but I have the day off so time to celebrate all day.

The lid is already off in Canada btw....2011 Premier Tattoos all set to go.

Just on that, my 10 year old said yesterday that if there is one team he wants to beat, it's the Blues. The Blues have been horrible for the most part of his life so I feel I've done my job well instilling the required hatred of the Blues. Hope Blues supporters are doing the same with their kids.

Crush em Pies !!!

Yep...my three year old over here yells Go Pies whenever the footy is on, no matter who is playing.

He won't even know the other teams names until he is smart enough to work it out for himself. Except for Carlton, I sit up each night and tell him all the reasons they are scum.

I dont want a good or close match

I would love nothing more than to see us smash them from the first bounce. No mercy shown and a flogging from go to wo

There is some danger in this match because we dont really know how much they have improved this year

Hopefully the answer at 10pm tonight is "not at all"

I predict a black night for Carlton.

Tonight is going to be very veeeeeery ugly for them. Can't wait to listen to the plethora of angry Blues calling up SEN after the game calling for Ratten's head, or conversely claiming Collingwood only won because Carlton played at 20% capacity.

I think the reverse is true more. Having seen the Pies play in the GFs v Bris and almost reaching the pinnacle and then having to see their rise again and dominance last year the Blues young and old have found the feelings towards Coll enhanced plenty. Add to that the dramas with Eddie, jack, Sticks etc and you can add the Brownlow debacle last year to that as well and the ill feelings are massive. Here in WA the locals think they have a rivalry between Freo and WC but really it is still the arrogant eagles and wannabe Dockers just talking it up.
But hopefully the rivalry is fought out on the park and the fans can enjoy a great spectacle and celebrate 2 good teams competing well.

Looking forward to tonight.

I was more edgy about the Richmond game then tonight.

I know as a blue its standard to hate Collingwood, but I can watch you guys and accept that you’re a very good side. Essendon on the other hand.....

If we can get within 4 goals tonight I think we’ll be right for the rest of the year.

Richie.

If you can get within 4, I'd consider it a win for you. Seriously.

I think if Carlton were to win, they'd have to have a dominant game from someone like Waite. I can't see it happening and can't see enough game winners that can't be shut down outside of their midfield. Funny things can happen, but I think if we shut down a few key Carlton players, the team will struggle, whereas Collingwood have too many match winners to stop. I'm not sure we'd allow an open running game either unless we were well on top.
