5. LDU

Harry Sheezel was cool and calm in his first game on a back flank and won all the headlines, but it was Charlie Comben in game three and Luke Davies-Luke Davies-Uniacke in game 72 who left their fingerprints on this game. LDU has arrived as an elite player in the game. His skill set is incredible. He hunts the ball on the ground with his hands at the ready, keeps his feet, dodges bodies and wins the ball, all in heavy traffic. Then he explodes from the contests, swerving and carving through the opposition. He’s entered a phase of his career where, if he dominates, he is a matchwinner. An old Shinboner reckoned he reminded him of former Tiger Geoff Raines, who once was considered the “best centreman in Australia” until Maurice Rioli arrived at Richmond in the early 1980s. LDU had 32 disposals, 19 contested, 10 clearances and eight score involvements and was best afield by some way. Comben might be next. The 21-year-old had to ruck after Tristan Xerri was injured, and he had 11 score involvements, the most of any player.

Forget rising star, Harry Sheezel is already there

Thirty seconds into his first AFL game, in a position he'd only started playing a few months ago, Harry Sheezel looked like he'd been doing this for years. Possessing the calmness of a much more experienced player, the 18-year-old debutant never looked overawed. In fact, he only looked more assured as the game wore on, providing the Kangaroos with plenty of drive off half-back and setting up important forward forays with his decision-making and pinpoint passing. Sheezel amassed 34 disposals - the most by a debutant in 39 years - and looks to be integral to the Roos rising up the ladder this year. Not only is he all but a lock for this round's Rising Star nomination, he is also very likely to pick up Brownlow votes too. – Sophie Welsh

Anything. ANYTHING to spin a negative association with our club. That’s why. The bias is not even concealed anymore, it’s just open and blatant. This needs to be called out at every level.

100% this ☝️, when the Saints went through their post-Lyon rebuild in the mid 2010s they got some absolutely shocking crowds, same with the Dogs post-Eade around the same period, don't recall them once being called out for it in the media. Also no context given for Saturday, i.e the virtually non-existent away supporter presence and the genuine question mark about how hot it would get under the roof on a 37 degree day, alot of older supporters were genuinely worried it could be dangerous.

she's still going on with that. No idea why outlets continue to employ her.
Omg I tried to listen to that, what a horrible hag she is. Imagine that misery gutted troll at your dinner table.

Just quietly - Leigh Montagna is a very polished performer.
I think Montagna reads and understands the game better than most.
He did a little bit of work with Ross Lyon when he was at Freo.

This is something I posted a year or so back, he’s a gun.
His knowledge of all teams puts him in front of 95% of other journos and media performers.

I wouldn't really call that heated. They were all pretty much in agreement that it was a dumb thing to say. Leigh and Jimmy seemed to be trying to provide some context as to what he was trying to achieve and how that might resonate with the players and she seemed unable to fathom that because she seems to be more interested in the dirty laundry and "politics" of football rather than the actual game and the people that participate in the playing of it.

I did find it somewhat amusing though that 49 seconds in Caroline states "I mean if you do the wrong thing, just put your hand up". Let's just mull over that for a second. Caroline Wilson has told someone "that if you do the wrong thing, just put your hand up". She actually had the audacity to utter those words about someone else. She was able to speak that sentence with I am assuming a straight face (has she ever smiled?). WOW!!! Just f****** wow.

NORTH MELBOURNE

The Kangaroos kicked off the Alastair Clarkson era with a narrow five-point win over the Eagles in joyous scenes for the North Melbourne faithful after two tough years at the bottom of the ladder. It was a different looking Roos side that played with more dare and excitement, were hungrier without the ball and were more organised defensively. Perhaps most significantly, when the Eagles looked like running over the top, the Roos didn’t let up. Indeed, Clarkson’s fingerprints are already all over North, and really, it probably should’ve won by more, dominating contested possessions (152-115) and clearances (41-26) but at times failing to capitalise on their good play. The only downside was an ankle injury to Tristan Xerri that forced him out of the game in the first quarter.

In the votes

Harry Sheezel is going to be a star – if he isn’t already. The 18-year old became the youngest player this century to record 30 disposals on debut, ending with 34 possessions and nine marks in a classy performance across half back. Nick Larkey was on fire up forward with six goals, while Luke Davies-Uniacke continued his form from the second half of last season and path to superstardom with 32 disposals – 19 contested – to go with one goal, 10 clearances and five tackles.

Room for improvement

As revitalised as the Roos were, it wasn’t always pretty. The intent was there, but there were still sloppy mistakes and moments where they lacked composure, which is to be expected of such a young side. Clarkson’s side also struggled to score from several ample opportunities in front of goal, including kicking 2.6 in the final term where it could’ve put the Eagles away sooner.

OMFG CARRO - Women at North Melbourne aren’t happy he is there? What about ****ing Croc Media?
I wonder how many women, players wives and partners want their AFL/WAFL playing partner to interviewed by Tom ****ing Morris. ****ing serious.
Let’s see how the season goes?!
Was that a threat??
The same way you wrote both him and Fagan off when the allegations came out. Unproved statements supported by your own doubt.

North Melbourne really need to do two things.
Investigate the mishandling of JHF because out of all the recruits and all players, he was the only one who felt mismanaged and unsafe. And also to find out and investigate who the women that aren’t happy with Tarryn and Clarkson, and workout how to make it a safe work place for those involved.
