We're back to normal rules and squad sizes for this one: 22 + 1 medical sub.

My pick for the team:

FB: Docherty Young Williamson
HB: Williams Weitering Saad
C: Martin Cerra O'Brien
HF: JSOS C.Curnow Fisher
FF: Kemp McKay Durdin

R: TDK Cripps Hewett

Int: Setterfield, Stocker, E.Curnow, Dow

EMG: Pittonet, McGovern, Kennedy, Fogarty

Hoping for a little luck with injury here, but I'd imagine we're taking a look at these players if fit, and I expect most of them to be.

You must be joking to drop pitto, McGovern and Kennedy.

Reasonable line up

Given it's the Demons, we might see all of Weitering, Young and Omac

Harry might be saved for round 1, same with Stocker, possibly Doc.

Be good to see Dow, Carroll, Motlop have a hitout in this one

It's a squad of 22, with TDK, Docherty, Stocker, Dow, Ed, and McKay being brought back in... of course I'm dropping them.

If TDK and Stocker aren't fit, they probably stay in.

It's regular season rules... we can't carry extra talls.

If the others are fit, they need some minutes to blow out the cobwebs.

Dow won't get brought in. Voss openly said that he didn't play on Thursday because other mids competing for the same spot are ahead of him. Given all our mids played well and Dow did nothing special in the reserves the status quo will remain. Stocker also won't (injury) and probably not DeKoning either (Pittonet ahead).

Will be a full dress rehearsal so Voss will pick his best side available. McKay, Docherty, Martin, maybe Plowman and maybe Curnow the only ones to come back in.

Pretty sure it will be a full blown dress rehearsal for round 1 with the ‘potential’ team picked.

Thats the way I read it as well and based on Loyd/Voss commentary after St Kilda:

Harry 100% certain to play in round 1 maybe >70% chance for Melbourne game.
TDK and Docherty will probably be ready for round one - Docherty in calculations for Melbourne game if he is up to it.
No news on Stocker.
Walsh is progressing well - Club keen to get him back asap - subject to recuperation - which is going very well( definite scratch for rounds 1-3 at a minimum this stage I reckon) still in about of moon boot but back into gym work already.

Will be interesting to see who gets selected and check against availability. If not round 1 - by round 2 we should have all players available bar Walsh/Cuningham/Marchbank.

Playing the best side is going to really let us know where we are and test our defences.

Would love to get a look at some of the young guys like Motlop and Carroll but that may have to wait.

All eyes on our midfield again to see whether it can keep going forward and making progress, there is certainly some talent there.

Demons have and will go in with 3 genuine tall forwards, Jackson, Brown and McDonald.

Agree totally about playing the best side. Really dont learn much by playing Gold Coast and North.

Stockers way off and McKay a little less so

My preferred changes to the line up:

Boyd --> Plowman
Newnes --> Martin
Williamson --> Docherty (if ready)
Setterfield --> McKay (if ready)

How my squad of 26 would look:

FB - Plowman, McDonald, McGovern

HB - Saad, Weitering, Docherty

M - O’Brien, Cripps, Williams

HF - Martin, C. Curnow, Fisher

FF - Owies, McKay, Silvagni

FOL - Pittonet, Cerra, Hewett

I/C - Kemp, Newman, Kennedy, Durdin

Ext. I/C - E. Curnow, Williamson, Setterfield, Fogarty

As I've said previously, St Kilda was just getting minutes in the legs, and still pushed us. According to the stats I've seen, Kennedy applied the least direct pressure of all midfielders and smalls.

He was all one-way without unlocking the game for us offensively, and I refuse to indulge that in a modern midfield. Dow will at least completely blow open a stoppage in our favour, and has the raw ability to run the other way. Will happily take 18 touches from Dow over 30 from Kennedy.

If TDK isn't fit, fine: play Pittonet. If Docherty isn't right, keep McGovern. If McKay isn't right, play another small forward to continue the position battle, probably Owies. If Stocker isn't right, look at Boyd (defender), Owies (push Martin & Fisher into midfield more), or Fogarty (mid/fwd rotation). I prefer putting more midfield time into Fogarty.

Boggles my mind seeing people dumping out Setterfield when our rotation for wingers currently sucks. Did that well and did well at stoppages, tackling with aggression in both roles. Give O'Brien one wing with Martin and Ed spelling him, and then on the other rotate Setterfield, Fisher, Kemp, and Dow.

Even though we don't have it to spend, I wouldn't waste the height on McDonald, who is smart about how he breaks from an opponent and then does so with speed. Better to close his lanes or put someone quicker on him, so that's Williamson, Plowman, or McGovern (who I assume you were referring to anyway).

If he sits in or near the square to grapple, we should be set up and trained for others to roll off and intercept/spoil.

It would be interesting to test both theories

I didn't see the practice game but there have been mixed views on here about Setterfield's performance.

A widely held view on here is that his rather poor year last year was mainly because he was played out of his best position and he wasn't great when used on the wing.

Just wondering why he should be selected in that position in what we expect to be very close to our expected round one team. What has changed?

The widely held view was that he was carrying an injury hampering his running and ALSO being asked to play wing.

Wing in different gameplans are not equal as well. Voss has a much narrower game plan with less spread and hence less reliance on extreme distance running wingers. I also think he's probably a bit fitter and over that injury as he's been active most of the pre season hasn't he.

Last season setters should've had a month or more off but didn't, before you all decide to jump on me again I'm not assigning any blame for that at all. Can't believe I have to clarify that now, ****ing touchy place.

Not jumping on anyone at all, just asking the question. As I said I didn't see the practice game (can't believe I pay a subscription to foxtel and am expected to get Kayo just to watch my team play, but that's another story) so I have no idea how evident any gameplan changes were. Not even sure I'd recognise them even if I had watched.

Your response is cool if the changes were noticeable enough to make the difference you propose.

1. Dow isn't competing against Kennedy or Setterfield - he is competing against Walsh, Cerra and Fisher on midfield rotations. he doesn't have the 'game' to match Hewett Kennedy or Ed Curnow on the inside or the marking ability to match Kennedy as a forward mid option. To make it very clear- at this stage Fisher is way way ahead of Dow in Voss' thinking as a forward/mid rotation.

2. Anyone who bothered to actually watch the rotations in center bounces would have seen when and with whom Kennedy played and who didn't play with. For a one way runner as Kennedy has been referred to above- it is interesting to note how many possessions Kennedy took as in contested possessions forward of center versus behind of center as a defined target in ball movement - they were pretty balanced. Kennedy is playing a role which can be filled by Hewett or Ed - not Dow or Fisher.

3. Setterfield on a wing along with Newnes is the position that is most problematic for Voss in the absence of Walsh and maybe Martin - we will see if Setterfield keeps his spot - but no doubt after a sluggish start he did improve as the game wore on - however he was cut to pieces by Jones purely because he doesn't have the speed to get to where he should be in defensive transitional play - tough call Setterfield versus Newnes on a wing - because whilst Newnes has him covered for running power- Newnes has his own weaknesses.

4. McDonald has been given the green light as starting KPD ooption#1 based on pre-season form by Voss and Lyon ( FWIW) and Young has been mentioned as a someone who will no doubt be given opportunity - later.

I think LoB has locked in a wing spot based on his performance against Saints hge has improved a lot and Voss is making sure his run is being honoured not ignored.
