The next global catastrophe that we are totally complacent about and should be preparing for is protecting the electrical grid from a massive solar flare that will knock out the transformers. Massive ones happen every couple of hundred years with the last big one in 1859 before widespread electrification during which the auroras could be seen in the tropics. We're probably due for one in the coming decades and living for months without electricity will make the COVID pandemic look like an inconvenient blip.
