It is still really annoying me that they wont release age profiles for the people admitted to ICU's.

I even specifically asked the person who provides the SA information and copped a deflect.

Unless they release this sort of info what can we assume?

I guess we can assume ICU admissions are directly proportional to the chart below.

I felt it was the greatest failing of medical experts everywhere to imply that only old people and those with serious health conditions get badly sick from this virus. The misconception that it is only old people is still prevalent despite evidence to suggest that otherwise healthy young and middle aged people are also ending up in ICUs. If they wanted action, selfishness trumps altruism imo.
Just another point. Simply quoting stats on the % of the elderly who died from covid with one or more underlying conditions misses an important point. Three in every five Australians (60%) aged over 65 years have two or more chronic conditions. That's according to data from Australia's National Health Survey. So of course you'd expect a high % of elderly covid victims to have at least one chronic condition (a minimum of 60%). You need that context to properly interpret that data.

My data was from Italy, but I am sure your point is just as valid. In the report the age data and the chronic condition data is completely independent btw. There is nothing in that report that provides information on the number of elderly WITH chronic conditions that died.

Victorian authorities are expecting stranded Australians to return from Peru, India and Uruguay this weekend.
More than 1,200 Australians are expected to land at Tullamarine airport this weekend.
The flight from Uruguay is bringing passengers of the Greg Mortimer cruise ship home. About 70% of Greg Mortimer passengers have tested positive for Covid-19.

The report from Italy uses the term comorbidities and cites Ischemic heart disease, Stroke, Hypertension, Diabetes, Dementia in the table in your post. They are all considered to be chronic conditions. So terms comorbidities and chronic conditions are pretty much the same in that context.

Just heard a Press Conference from the Chief Medical Officer Victoria. Apparently there is a charter flight from Uruguay due into Melbourne with up to 70 people who have tested positive for COVID-19. These people are Australian and New Zealand passengers from a cruise ship docked in Uruguay.

At least this time they will all be assessed, the sick ones will go to hospital and the rest will be quarantined. The New Zealanders will be transferred to a charter flight for New Zealand.

Geez, these ****ing cruise ships will not go away. I reckon the cruise industry will be stuffed after this. Cruise operators and travel agents will say they are perfectly safe but that is what they would have said six months ago.

So, will these cases go into the Australian stats or will they be counted separately?

Two weeks ago on the 28th March Australia had 3635 cases of COVID-19 which was a 14.81% increase on the previous day's total. If we had continued at 14.8% we would now have 28,816 cases on the books as opposed to the 6,292 that we have. At that rate we were looking at doubling our infection rate in five days. As it is we may not get to 7270 inside of three weeks.

On that basis we would have to conclude that social distancing and isolation at home has worked in halting the spread of the virus. Whether it is enough to stamp it out completely is another story.

great and SMART president trump brags about TV ratings, because clearly people are tuning in to press briefings because they want to see more of the trumpster! very cool guy!

Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump

The Wall Street Journal always “forgets” to mention that the ratings for the White House Press Briefings are “through the roof” (Monday Night Football, Bachelor Finale, according to @nytimes) & is only way for me to escape the Fake News & get my views across. WSJ is Fake News!

how can anyone defend him? this wouldn't be the 1,000th worst thing he's done in his presidency and yet if this was anyone else they'd be hauled over the coals for bragging about ratings during a global pandemic.

A young boy from an isolated Amazonian tribe has died after contracting the coronavirus.
The death has raised fears for the tribe and other indigenous peoples in the Amazon rainforest who are particularly vulnerable to diseases brought in from the outside world.

The 15-year-old Yanomami indigenous boy was hospitalised a week ago at an intensive care unit in Boa Vista, in northern Brazil, officials said.
He died of severe respiratory complications on Thursday night, the country's health ministry confirmed in a statement.
A Yanomami rights group said the boy had come into contact with “many” other indigenous people after he began showing symptoms.
The Hutukara Association has now called on authorities to track them down and help them undergo testing and self-isolation.
It also urged the government to crack down on illegal gold miners on indigenous lands, believed to be the source of the contagion.
“This disease is very dangerous for us,” said Dario Yawarioma, a Yanomami leader. “It’s a very sad day for the Yanomami.”
Brazil is home to an estimated 800,000 indigenous people from more than 300 ethnic groups.
The Yanomami, who are known for their face paint and intricate piercings, number around 27,000.
Brazil is the country hit hardest by the coronavirus pandemic in Latin America, with 1,000 deaths so far.

terrible.

He also waffled on about how antibiotics used to be so good at combating "germs"... in a press conference about a virus.

And yes people will still defend this unutterably cretinous boob.

I hope Will Lyman lives long enough to narrate the Frontline story on the Trump assassination...

"As Melania Trump is led away by the FBI, she turns to the cameras and is seen to mouth the words "Me too""

"Pre-nups don't count if he dies, right?"

Way to miss the point. He is saying that it's allowed him to speak directly to the American people unfiltered. Something the media do not want or try and allow there. They have been wanting and trying to block public broadcasts in the middle of a pandemic, the same media for the American people wants to cut their access off to hear directly from their president and you say can't understand the tweets context lol.

jac147 further to our posts yesterday about Rugby Union, World Rugby say they will help the tier one countries. This story in today's SMH. RA wants player to take a 65% pay cut for next 6 months.

Rugby Australia insists it has heard nothing about loans set to be handed out by World Rugby to tier-one nations worth up to £100 million ($196 million) on another day where no resolution was reached on player pay cuts.

If there is no rugby played for the rest of the year, RA stands to lose as much as $120 million in revenue. But unlike other football codes, the organisation is able to ask for a bailout from World Rugby, which is not short of cash, particularly after the recent Rugby World Cup. RA has been in regular contact with World Rugby and is hopeful it may be eligible for a low-interest loan or access to cash reserves.

World Rugby has been drawing up action plans during the COVID-19 crisis, however former Wallaby Tim Horan made the claim on Saturday that Australia stands to receive a major cash injection as early as next week.

“World Rugby have been in long conversations with Rugby Australia over the last two weeks about a potential loan,” Horan told Fox Sports News. “There has been some really good conversations the last 48 hours. It looks like there will be a solution by Wednesday next week, with World Rugby loaning Rugby Australia upwards of 50, maybe £100 million for the next four years, potentially until the next Rugby World Cup. That is huge news.”
Horan later clarified he had heard the deal would be between £50 million and £100 million all up and that RA would receive a slice of that pie along with all tier-one nations. An RA spokesperson said no confirmation had been received and that Horan's comments were surprising.

“We are assessing, in partnership with the unions, the COVID-19 impact on global rugby activities alongside a return to competition strategy that will lessen the blow for all," a World Rugby spokesperson said. "This is a dynamic and complex situation and would be inappropriate to hypothesise.”

Meanwhile, an agreement on pay cuts for Australia’s professional players could drag on beyond the long weekend after RA and the Rugby Union Players Association failed to come to an agreement on Saturday.
Both parties began their 9am meeting with the hope of sorting out the finer details of just how much Australia’s 192 professional players will sacrifice over the coming months. After a lengthy phone hook-up lasting four hours, progress was made but nothing concrete that either party could agree on. RA is asking its professional players to take a 65 per cent pay cut for the next six months, while RUPA is keen for other conditions to be considered before agreeing.

The New York State website fatality table lists the comorbidities and says 80% of deaths had at least one. You can scroll down that table on the right to get all age groups.

Paradoxically, this is the demographic with the highest number of infections.
Not a paradox at all. If they are taking the higher risks, it should be expected that they would be hit the hardest. More cases naturally increases the possibility of bad cases.
