For exactly the reason described. Every physical or proximity interaction you have increases the risk of you becoming infected, or spreading the infection to others.

Slowing the spread means reducing the risk and incidence of transmission.

Which can be achieved through social distancing. Self isolating should be a last resort and saved until we are told we have to do it. How long does self isolation last anyway? This epidemic could last for six months and we may eventually be told to clear the streets and public places.

If we listen to the Chief Medical Officer Dr Brendan Murphy we will know that health authorities recommend we practice social distancing rather than self isolating. Social distancing is not new and it requires maintaing a distance of 1.5 metres from other people whenever possible. For me I will go out whenever I have to and will social distance when I can. I will also avoid body contact such as shaking hands, touching my face etc. I will leave the self isolation until I am told I have to do it.

Corona virus will disrupt the economy for sure but if we all lock ourselves away at home and don't get out and spend some money many small businesses will fold so I don't quite understand Magda's take on that. To Szubanski's credit at least she is trying to do something to help stem the spread of COVID-19 I just think she is over reacting at this stage.

Are you a public health official? A virologist? An epidemiologist? A mathematical epidemiologist? A network scientist? A medical doctor?

Or are you a terminal conspiracy theorist on a football forum with a penchant for metaphysics and the fantastical?

Stop.

Why would I need to be any of those things? These guys are:

So they don’t know. All they can do is go by the data as it comes in.

The data is freely available. You can go by what people tell you or by what the data actually says.

Here’s some light reading for you.

Basically tells you that 98% of the cases in Singapore were of Chinese heritage.

Says that the real issue might be an over abundance of immune cells and their activating compounds (cytokines), which causes inflammation, nausea etc.

“One study (preprint), 1 using single-cell sequencing, found that expression of ACE2 was more predominant in Asian men, which might be the reason for the higher prevalence of COVID-19 in this subgroup of patients than in women and patients of other ethnicities.”

ACE2 is the receptor for SARS-Cov-2.

I don’t need to be a doctor. I just need to be able to read.

Shopping centres provide consumer staples. Restaurants don't.
Public transport provides essential service to every day living.

It seems pretty clear to me why those places are still able to operate (though with increased focus on social distancing and hygiene). If you shut either or both of those down completely, the result would be widespread madness never seen before in this country.

The whole idea is to impose enough restrictions that we reduce the spread, not eliminate - but reduce it while also keeping society as operable as possible.

It's so hard to balance.
I think people working in essential services like super-markets need to be supplied with protective gloves and masks that cover the mouth, nose and eyes. That's what staff in the Fever clinic at my hospital are wearing (where all the COVID-19 testing is done).

They should be protected while putting their health on the line.

Also can we please stop egging on the deaths of boomers? It's pretty f’ed. We all have parents, grandparents or relatives that fall into the Boomer category.
In any case, egging on someones death is reserved for people like Osama Bin Laden, not your Grandparents.

Alot of valued posters here are Boomers as well, I think we're better than that.

Agreed, as a `boomer' myself it does get a bit boring after a while, and at 72 I'm still only 5 - 8 kegs above my `playing weight,' I can still run around the block at a reasonable clip, and on club days I can still put a car around the Mallala track within a gnat's appendage of the lap times of the sub 35 yo hotshots. :)

Being serious for a moment though, you only have to sit in any doctor's surgery for 20 mins or so to see people who are at least 20 years too young to be boomers, and who for whatever reason are absolute physical wrecks.

What will be interesting this year is that a lot of players in their draft year won’t get a chance to prove themselves and have a breakout season that puts them onto clubs draft boards.
You'd think it'd benefit the clubs with lower picks. There's more chance of players who'll be good sliding down as there isn't that recent exposed form to rate every one on.

I'm amazed that there's so many experts on forums and social media. You'd think they'd all be busy working in hospitals or laboratories or government think tanks.

They probably would be if successive governments on both sides of the isle hadn’t cut research funding over a number of years.

Who am I kidding? We’re in the age of social media, everyone is an expert.

Singapore’s relative success in dealing with the outbreak puts the leadership of most other developed nations to shame.

There is a clear distinction. The 100 limit is for indoor meetings, the 500 limit is for outdoor.

So the roof will be open at Marvel?

Brad Scott is not happy.

lol just caught up on the last 4-5 pages. Really exposes who the complete weirdos are, wowee. This crisis has really irreversibly destroyed some posters image, lmao.

Except Janus, we already knew he is the gold plated Dunning-Kruger.

COVID-19 (too rye aye) was released to cover up the mass illness caused by the rollout of the 5G network.

dO sOmE ResEacH!

That is from early February have you got anything recently. This has been changing every hour. The virus is mutating, how it presented in Singapore is different to how it went through the population in Italy and so on..

There was a story buried on Sunrise this morning. This was not treated as a big deal but apparently scientists in the US have begun trialing a COVID-19 vaccine on patients. This comes on top of the news that in Brisbane medical researchers managed to kill corona virus with a mixture of AIDS and malaria drugs.

There is some hope.

In the US there is a push to get Trump not to allow any one company to licence a COVID-19 vaccine. US law makers want the COVID-19 vaccine to be freely available and accessible to all.

AFL coronavirus updates: Scott Morrison puts heat on the AFL
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has heaped responsiblity on Australia’s footy codes as the AFL debates whether Round 1 will go ahead.
Uncertainty remains over Round 1 of the AFL season with footy bosses expected to announce today whether this year’s campaign will kick off as scheduled on Thursday night amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Among the reaction and developments include:
— Prime Minister Scott Morrison saying the decision whether or not to go ahead with the season is up to the AFL if it can abide by new restrictions announced today.

It won't be available for 18 months.

Looking forward to the social distancing on the footy field. At least we won’t be able knock players for pulling out of contests

As someone who works in a supermarket, its ****ed. At 10am today we had lineups at checkouts like you would see at 5pm on a Sunday.

I've already delt with my fair share of ****wits that feel entitled to have each one of their 4 family members grab a 32 pack of toilet paper and go through different registers. Happy that the community hour has been brought in for the first hour of opening.

By easter we'll be at 10,000 cases in this country and schools will close. It's not a gamble anymore it's inevitable.

School closures won't happen. That is a clear directive of the government for a multitude of reasons.

If we can somehow reduce the number of Vic clubs that would be great, thanks.
That'd be good. Gil lacks courage to lead on reducing the obvious too many Vic clubs in normal circumstances. For the AFL long term one can only hope (hahaha!) he uses the excuse here to say the AFL can't support so many going forward.

School closures won't happen now no. At the point of when we have over 10,000 infected it's guaranteed as they are all over Europe

Government directed School closures won't happen, as I said.

We're following Singapores model of control. Schools can still close themselves for whatever reason though.

ordinary behaviour but not surprising.

i haven’t been shopping for about a week, and it’s been about 4 weeks since I bought toilet paper (lucky I still have a few days supply right now).

i ventured out this morning at 8, and the worst part is not the toilet roll aisle being empty but the hecken campaigners who gather in groups of 6, each with a trolley, 3 of them empty, having a chat in the aisles. “We thought home delivery would be the way to go”.....

Fcuk you, move outside the shop to have an idle chat, or go to the cafe that is just in the forecourt. At least they missed out on the Bog Rolls, mince meat, pasta, hand sanitiser.

I got the last 2 mince meat packs, stick some veggies in and give it to the dog, he will be happy.

Can you please stop referring to this thing like it's the fkg plague and remember it's a fkg flu which with most people with just have mild symptoms. The mortality rate is so low its ridiculous. Are we seriously going to halt people's incomes cos of another flu wich is no more terminal than the other ones out there?
It's not just the virus not causing everyone to die. It'll tie up so many medical resources that people will die of what would otherwise be treated conditions. Even non-life threatening things like many elective surgeries will be done much less. Once there's a vaccine it'll settle down, but until then all these measures to restrict it are the least bad option.

This logarithmic graph shows growth in Oz so far is slower than the main countries. China started plateauing at around 40 days after the 100th cas and South Korea and around 20 days.
We've benefited to this point from peak flu (/virus) season is cooler months and we've been in Summer / early Autumn, where instances and spread of viruses is slower. Hopefully governments continue to toughen restrictions / containment measures as we now head into cooler weather.
