The supermarket thing needs to be controlled too. Would love to see the army brought in and dudes with open carry rifles standing out the front of every supermarket controlling these dumb, self absorbed turkeys.
I am hoping this scenario causes a turn to more social awareness and policy making, not fascist.

Both are as likely as each other unfortunately.

Dwayne desperately wants footy to go ahead. Some bloke rings up SEN and tells him people are dying and Dwayne gives him the "that's your opinion and you're entitled to it" schtick.

Fox employee involved in Fox coverage of football wants football to go ahead, I can't imagine he has any sort of bias in this trying time.

Asian countries wouldn't hesitate deploying the army in situations like this. It doesn't happen often because we live in such a privileged society but sometimes the natural urges of people to be absolute flogs needs to be forcibly restrained.

Scomo put it on the public to call them out, I hope to see battle royales break out.

Quoting stats on the number of deaths by disease type is irrelevant. You need to look at the mortality rates. Using stats in the 4th graphic you cite as evidence for no difference in rates makes the point.

Fatality rate for COVID-19 0.7% to 3.4%
Fatality rate for sesonal flu around 0.1%

So in best case scenario COVID-19 is 7 times as deadly and worst over 30 times.

S.Korea has the lowest rate (0.7%), mainly because it's imposed a strict lockdown of its population. We haven't done that yet.

There's no point quoting stats on Australia's mortality rate because we are in the very early stages of the outbreak.
PMP given your experience what do you make of these stats I put up on page 52 from data presented in the worldometers site for 9 countries and Oz from the covid19data Oz site.

The stats for death rate on closed cases shows China and South Korea around 5% and around 50% or most other countries, with Oz at 15%.

It seems that the serious cases data is probably underreported of the still active cases for most countries, with everyone except China reporting low percentage of serious active cases, but I looked up using web archive when China had around 20,000 cases and back then they had a lot higher death rate than as at yesterday but lot lower serious active case rate compared to yesterday.

Is there a fair bit of learn by doing, so the longer this goes the lower the death rate of closed cases happens??

Edit this twitter site says Oz has 1 critical case https://twitter.com/COVID_Australia

Iran stats on serious active cases are obviously non existent.

China stats 4th February

Apart from the optics of the AFL going ahead when all other sports have shut up shop, I'm not sure what's wrong with playing the games

Yes they're breaching the 'social distancing' recommendations but so are hundreds of thousands on public transport / work etc.

Everyone needs to take the extra precautions when they can and I'm sure the AFL players are being more isolated, checked and tested than 99% of the general populace

People need a bit of reassurance that the sky's not actually falling and a few games of footy might just help

I am totally against ever using the Army on home soil.

The police are bad enough.

Has the NRL shut up shop? I haven't heard anything. Nothing on their website.

Isn't A-League still going ahead but Wellington and Melbourne Victory quarantined for 14 days and other teams will play?

Isn't W-League playing its finals?

We need to think about people's anxiety and stress. Having sport on the weekend helps give people a feeling of normalcy in highly uncertain times, something to watch on the weekend - a break from the crisis.

Given the risk to players is minimal and the number of people that move around with a team are not that significant in the grand scheme of domestic travel let them play! The country could use a distraction and something else to talk about (look how big sport and cinema were during the Great Depression).

Like chiwigi I am against bringing the army in, but if its the only way to stop the shear spazo nature of so many people at the supermarkets, maye a bit of shock and awe with machine guns pointed at the idiots might wake them up.

But unfortunately it will put the fear of god into normal people and probably make things worse.

i want the footy to go one, we need the footy to go on.

If schools and doctors etc. can keep working. Footballers can be isolated and play the games, gives us all something to focus on.

I agree with you REH

There's still a lot cancelled both locally and OS

Take as many precautions as you need but let 'em play !

NRL are begging the AFL to not shut up shop so they don’t have to
