Woke up with a scratchy throat so messaged the boss at 6am and said "im not gonna come in, scratchy throat etc, will get a RAT and if its clear ill be in Wednesday (our next office day)".

Got a response "Understood, make sure to get the RAT and send me a picture of result, we need some process and surety around office absences"...

Now... I get it, they wanna make sure people dont take the piss but also, get stuffed, im still working today, in the exact same capacity i have been for nearly two years but you need me to go out, buy a RAT and send you the result. Im sure some people will just go "**** it, ill head in".

Employers wanting their cake and eating it too.

Yeah that's a pretty ridic requirement if you aren't putting in for sick leave.

That's pretty shit mate.

I look at it and think that employers have to start doing it for everyone or there will be someone who takes the piss, then arcs up when asked for proof of RAT when they never asked Phantom or any of the other workers!!!1!1!!!111

Look, i kinda get it, i really do, i have had staff taking the piss before but
1- Im actually still working today
2- You dont want to do ANYTHING that might deter people from avoiding the office if they are sick at the moment
3- It seems unnecessarily onerous given we have all been working from home for 2 years, like overnight its just expected that we cant possibly trust out staff anymore

I had RATs at home so i did it and im not going to complain i just think its not very smart.

A lot of people in Melbourne have been working from home for the better part of two years. Employers should be happy with flexibility as it results in a happier workforce, clearly they know WFH can work. Doing this just pisses employees off for no reason.

Especially in an environment where there is plenty of job choice at the moment. It is very difficult to retain staff. Why piss them off?

It's dumb business.

Fair enough to ask you to take a RAT, but only if they provide it for you. I work for an employer where I get RAT tested twice a week, but all the tests are provided for me by my employer. Happy to do it to protect my colleagues in that circumstance.

Why should they provide you with the RAT?

If you were sick with something else should they pay for your doctors visit for the med cert?

but P13 wasn't using sick leave

their boss wanted them to take a RAT to work from home, because apparently saying I have a scratchy throat, going to work from home was somehow a problem

and don't get me started on the bullshit that is the current get a medical certificate when its nigh on impossible for a lot of people to get a same day appointment unless they want to sit in ED for hours when they should be home resting 99% of the time

Because we're still in a pandemic and they care about protecting the long term health of their employees? I know that sounds like a socialist idea, but hey; I care about not spreading COVID around if I'm infectious.

Forcing you to get a medical certificate is basically your employer saying 'I don't trust you'. It is also ridiculous; if you are sick with an infectious condition, going to sit in a doctor's surgery to spread it around is not a great idea. That should have been obvious a while ago but feeding the machine of capitalism and 'soldiering on' while sick/infectious were the way things were done pre-COVID.

I see your point but fundamentally the reason this concept exists is because the majority of people take the piss out of their employers/jobs. It's not a distrust in a specific person (unless their specific behaviour has called for it.)

I don't think it's the majority, it would be a big difference employer by employer I imagine.

Where I work people generally don't take the piss, because the employer generally doesn't make them jump through stupid hoops.

Real big broad swing of a statement there.

Sure on reflection the term 'the majority' was probably a bit heavy but my point still stands in the above post.

So?

Is it that hard to believe that some employers would put these practices in to place because they're tired of the employees that are unreliable?
Alternately is that hard to believe that after doing everything asked of them under pretty trying circumstances for the last two years some employees might be a bit concerned that there still seems to be very little trust coming back?

You seem to assume that this is the tail wagging the dog but there is proven track records now for staff actually optimizing efficiency and working better flexibly but at the first week of return to the office managers are behaving like 80s power model pricks.

The bad employee is like the bad unemployed person

Power always blames those they are being campaigners to for doing it

One person might not be trustworthy so we treat you all as lazy liars

I think ultimately i was a little bit pissed about the request for a number of reasons

  • We returned last week and i was in the office on all the days our management requested
  • After two years of WFH the attitude of "you MUST return" off two days notice i thought was pretty shit
  • Weve also been told to stay home if we have so much as a sniffle (which absolutely juxtaposes with the above)
  • I didnt take the day off, i was at my desk at home working in full capacity (in the exact same manner as i had been the week before and every week prior for the last two years) so my note to not attend the office only benefits my management and team

I understand the desire to have some systems and processes in place so people dont take the piss but the snap return to the office whilst still in pandemic mode probably needs a bit more flexibility and understanding IMO.

It seems like a request from an organisation with bureaucracy that hasn't caught up to the reality of the changed working landscape. If people are sick, but capable of working, it's better for the organisation for them to work from home and not spread it around the office. If you don't have COVID and thus it's a negative RAT, you could still have a myriad of things that result in other people getting sick.

Are you in a position to make your argument to management, or too risky? Will you be labelled Not A Team Player?
