So the Chief Medical Officer has come out and said all gatherings of 500+ people should be immediately cancelled.

Getting less and less likely that AFL proceeds and if it does, it won't include spectators.
Theyre'd nearly be 500 in two teams , all the support staff , the people to open the gates, clean up ,doctors, whoever else.

I think we're looking at an end to the season. Certainly when players get it that'll be it.

Saw an article somewhere (so many, I forget) that us oldies and aged care residents will probably be left to fend for ourselves i.e. not given ICU beds if younger people need them...

...oh joy!

Some hospitals in Italy are sending over 60's home. Sorry, all the best can't help you. Younger people can not only be saved easier, but can overcome the virus faster.

Exactly the reason why mass gatherings need to be knocked on the head. The slower the spread the greater the chance that our medical system will cope & everyone will be able to receive the care they deserve.

Edit: Read or heard somewhere today that we only have around 2000 ICU beds in the country. Thought that was extremely low (hope that was just in NSW for example), but perhaps it's correct. I guess, something like this isn't what medical systems are setup to cope with.

The best thing you can watch is Boris Johnson’s press conference last night. Puts Morrison’s and Trumps pressers to shame.

Scroll to the 23:30 mark. It’s approximately 20 minutes, but genuinely worth the watch or listen, because it has the head of the NHS map out the UK’s plan for treating the virus.

Johnson also said, while they currently have 500+ reported cases, they believe the true figure is likely 10 times that.

We need decisive leadership right now........and the people (all of us) need to do what is required of us and keep our heads down.

Apparently there was mass abuse at the GP this morning. Seriously, we don't need that type of behaviour, it's for everyone's benefit. A nuisance yes, but not worthy of abuse........and we might even survive and come out the other side smiling and grateful for these drastic measures.

Our politicians have their heads in the sand and IMO are derelict in their duty and are an utter disgrace.

We should've been locked down from last weekend.

Everything should be shut down now, take it by the scruff of the neck and try to stop it in its tracks. This bit here and a bit there is pointless and dangerous.

I’ve been on the ‘receiving’ end of that type of decision. I was anaphylactic allergic to the standard chemo drugs (very ugly) and was given new generally unavailable drugs on compassionate grounds which were having a 11yo child. It was/is strange that without her, my alternatives meant way way worse outcome

Pre virus there are doctors, nurses already making these decisions daily. It’s tough and I’m glad I’m not making them.

Qld plans include suspending surgeries and converting surgical wards to icu. Icu nurses will oversee teams of other nurses.

Staggeringly, the AFLW game in Geelong is going ahead tonight and even worst, spectators can attend. :drunk:

I’ve been going to Aflw but probably not tomorrow.

My kid has two school camps in the next three weeks. Less than 500 so will be interesting to see if they go ahead. Kids are grotty germ carriers.

Just had a call from the chemo ward where I still get treated every three weeks - asking after my general health before Monday’s treatment. I have to ring before treatment if I have any symptoms. Didn’t ask, but wonder what happens if I do get it. Flexible treatment or no treatment?

What a time to be a Victorian member, first of our only four games in Melbourne is round 1. :drunk:
Lucky you to still have three more. There are no Sydney games this year, so most likely the only game I was going to be able to see was Easter Thursday vs Collingwood because we are in town for family stuff. Doesn't seem likely now.

ABC radio just said that as of Monday all non essential gatherings of 500 people or more will be banned in all states and territories.

Missed who was speaking but might have been health minister
Everyone I have heard from thinks this is too late and should be enacted earlier

NRL is also going ahead this weekend with spectators in attendance.

You'd think crowd numbers would be down.
NRL are proceeding on the basis that they don't usually exceed 500 spectators per game.

Just shows the incompetence and greed of officials/politicians whoever.

If we're banning it on Monday why on earth are the risks any less tomorrow ???

Madness.

Just to listen to Johnson and the two British Health boffins compared to the lack of intelligence ,clear thinking and dumb messaging that we have here makes one weep.

The reason Andrews and the F1 chief wouldn't cancel was because whoever cancelled first triggered a funding clause. Standoff.

So this goose allowed thousands of tourists people and equipment to come into the state from overseas and potentially infect people because of the legal contract he had with the GP. And used his health adviser who was clearly giving public advice at odds with any other medical experts around the world as cover.

Unfit for office.

I am assuming that with the cancellation of gatherings of 500 or more people will mean that all schools will be cancelled?
"Non-essential".

Schools and universities are considered essential.

I'm just glad my pub only holds 100 or so.

Cancelling schools sounds like it could be wrong-headed too, at least based on why the NHS in the UK is saying. Will mean some fraction of health staff will need to stay home to care for kids, reducing the treatment capacity of the system. It's a real damned if you do, damned if you don't situation
