Gee i'm not sure i would want to be an AFL player with the lock down rules they have to follow. They are not robots, and should be allowed to have some down time, these rules are ******* crazy.

AFL players banned from golf, VFL may restart with just eight teams
AFL

The AFL has a date for the season relaunch.
But the players need to follow a strict set of rules in order for the season to run smoothly.
.

STRICT RULES FOR AFL PLAYERS
Golf and surfing are among two sports off limits to AFL players for the remainder of the 2020 season.
With the AFL fighting hard to get training underway on Monday – before starting matches from June 11 – players have been given a memo 40 pages long outlining protocols they must following.
According to The Age, AFL players will not be able to surf, play a round of golf or take their kids to a playground under the league's return to play rules.
However, players are able to go and visit their partners even if they don’t live together. AFL players are unable to welcome visitors into their homes, even though families members are not bound by the same restrictions.
Among the other restricted activities reported, AFL players can’t sit down in cafes, go fishing or boating, hold a picnic, have dinner at a friend’s place or perform volunteer/community work.

Players will be given a full tutorial of rules on Monday when non-contract training resumes across the board.
Golf? Tirade from Sam Newman incoming.

This is surely overstepping the mark by the AFL. They have no right to dictate what players do in their personal time.

Will this affect West Coast/Fremantle players who are have to live at a ****ing resort interstate away from their homes?

Thats draconian. I cant see how most of those activities are of any risk. Have the AFLPA ticked this off? I can see some.major mental health issues arrising from this for players with underlying issues,, even those witjout to be honest. You cant stop these guys from actually living for 6 months.

It is tough but a lot would be fine to just get on with it as you have to remember there would have been even more of a cut to their pays if they didn't play this year.

As the weeks go by i could imagine they would be aloud to do more things.

Their insurance companies would beg to differ.

Hmm usual preview isn't working on this one, for those interested the headline

"Yes, there are some things pro athletes aren’t allowed to do"

Goes through some of the conditions on US team sport contracts. In particular NBA contracts now have a stipulation you can't do any pro wrestling after Malone and Rodman's efforts in the 90s HoneyBadger35

Well I’m sure the Victorian clubs will complain loudly enough if the WA/SA clubs are allowed to play golf because it gives them an unfair advantage..........

Ridiculous. Some of the things going on are insane. Being an AFL player is about to get very depressing.

Other side of the coin here

While some of the restrictions being placed on them are a bit over the top, they are still getting paid a lot of money to do this in an era when lots of people are losing their job.

A lot of people who are working are being forced to do weird arrangements to stay employed, AFL players are just another one.

This.

Some people were or are still working from home for probably a lot less coin and being forced to stay inside.

These people can still do outdoor recreation activities. The players have received a substantial pay cut, have been forced to relocate interstate and now cannot do the things other people can do to switch off.

These arrangements are ridiculous, there is no other way to describe them. If you cannot let the players have a life outside of footy, the season shouldn't be starting yet.

It was a temporary pay cut for a few months, they will be back to their full pay shortly.

End of the day though they are doing what they can to ensure the financial survival of the league and a number of clubs. The longer you draw it out the more financial strain you are putting on things with something like only 6 clubs able to survive in the long run without the season going ahead.

But with all things, if they choose not to play, forego their salary and don't want to accept the terms than their would be other players in lower leagues who would take that chance.

It doesn't make the restrictions any better, but it's unfortunately a necessary evil for the greater good.
