Cotchin wants to keep the #9

Really think the idea mentioned earlier about having a small 17 on the cap't jumper is very appealing. I guess it's the clubs call. Getting the balance right between having great traditions and having players continue to write their own is an interesting issue. Traditions are GREAT but I would'nt like to think they also keep people focused on the past. Ideally I'd want the 2 things side by side. Acknowledge the past greats and what they represent but the understanding that the current group make their own traditions as a continuation and extension of those greats that have gone before. Also to me the thing that's important is the things that made the past greats Great. That is the thing that needs to be highlighted. Also past players need to be seen as human and not out of reach otherwise new players will maybe feel intimidated by them and see them as pie in sky and out of reach. 2c worth.

So if that being the reason the tradition has only been around for nine years I don't have a problem with it - was not just something that was made up out of the blue. But I also agree with the idea of players keeping their own number and having a separate representation of 17 on the captains jumper.

So something like this?

Must let RFC_Official know about this option.

Give it to Deledio then. It's now clear that Trent Cotchin cares more about writing his own story than being part of the team success. He is now bigger than the club it appears. When he is gone in 10 years time we can all stop going to the footy. Wayne Campbell, Kane Johnson and Chris Newman have all been forgotten, they all wore the same number so I cant cope....it's all a blur to me. What a load of crap. Pull your head in Trent. You play for the jumper and there is no higher honour than wearing the #17. The captain of a footy club should be prepared to do whatever it takes for the club, including being anonymous if need be. Vote #1 Deledio!

Would be pretty disappointed if he didn't take on the number 17 (and a little surprised). Especially after stating that he would gladly take it on if bestowed the honour of captaining the Tigers.

That said, it's Trent Cotchin. He can do pretty much whatever he wants in my eyes.[/quote]

Yup, I feel the same way about my optometrist.

I really dont like the captain wearing 17 , i have never liked it, let players create their own numbers, I just wish the club would have come out and said they are retiring the 17, or they are stopping the "Tradition" rather than make it look like Cotchin is disrespecting Jack Dyer.. Which obviously he isnt at all, but thats how the media will try and spin it! I really hope we scrap the captain wearing 17, If Cotch is the bloke who does this ill love him even more than i do already (somehow)

Great idea!
This years pick 9 to wear the #1128 jumper. Ridiculous statement really. All numbers have already been repeated.

Maybe change your signature to

Cotchin > Richmond

Edit: Sorry I'm not trying to pick on you, just trying to make a point im passionate about.

Jack Dyer would not want every captain wearing his number

You're free to have your own opinion about this, but speaking on behalf of dead people is not really a good way to construct an argument. Sorry.

On the 17 over the heart thing, I can kind of live with it but does that make the real number 17 get retired indefinitely? That doesn't sit real well with me either. I personally think that retiring numbers is for cases where a former (or current) player loses their life before their time (ala Darren Millane). I think it's a nice mark of respect to do that, but only for an appropriate period of mourning. If we follow the logic of retiring 17 we may was well get ready to permanently retire 4 and 12 and 29 and 30 one day too (and where do you draw the line?)

I am a "17 = Captain" fan. Would rather him have the 17 on his back and his nine over his heart.

I also like the idea of no 17 being our captain ...... tradition has to start somewhere, and it is a 'young' tradition worth keeping.

I do, however, recall hearing Cotch saying he would not mind the no 17 guernsey, maybe he has changed his mind ......

Take a deep breath matey and try to relax. I thought I would see some for and against but didn't think I would see anything this extreme.

It's just a number FFS!!! JUST A FRIGGIN NUMBER!!! With no tradition behind it other than it was once worn by a past great of the club. Back when it was introduced, it was done so as a feel good measure. To give us fans the warm and fuzzies given our situation over the preceding 20+ years. Trent can wear whatever number he wants for all I care and fans like you shouldn't get so worked up about it. This has NOTHING to do with not toeing the club line. I can assure you that the players themselves behind closed doors couldn't give a rats arse about the number 17, who wears it and what it means. I guarantee you that they feel this way. In public obviously they say what the fans want to hear.

Mate I understand you are passionate about this issue but to use it as an example that Cotch is placing himself above the club is ridiculous. I could think of very few players in the league who embody the edict of "team first" more than Trent. Seriously.

Did i seriously just read someone pretend Cotchin was being disrespectful wanting to keep his own number, did i seriously just read he was putting himself ahead of the club... How does anyone come to that conclusion ... How do you even argue that .. its surely a joke... has to be.. Noone could possibly think that... Wowweee ! Scrap the 17 its stupid, a 10 year Gimmick being palmed off as a tradition! Let kids create history in their own jumpers, In 20 years i hope were arguing about who to give Cotchins famous number 9 too

Well, Wayne Campbell was a club captain and 4-time B&F winner. Basil McCormack and Martin Bolger both wore No 9 at times and won B&Fs (players changed numbers quite regularly in the 20s and 30s.) McCormack is in our TOTC. John Northey wore it in 67 and 69.

Cotchin has a fair way to go before he becomes the most famous number 9 at Richmond.

AAAaahhh yes...Will-Of-The-Wisp...John Northey of the HFF...Legend...

As for Cotchin...anything you do is fine by me son...just as long as you dont leave our Club...

If the club make an issue out of this they can bash their membership up their arse. It's a captains choice god I respect that kid!

The club is bigger than any player, when the Cotch is long retired I will still be supporting the Tigers.

I like the no.17 for Captain idea but it wont really worry me one way or the other as long as we get back in the finals and start winning flags again.

How do you think traditions start?
