Could Harvey win a Brownlow at 35?

No, I don't think so. He may still be a good player, or even an excellent player, but there are too many other players playing above his level these days for him to win. Good luck to him though. A fantastic ornament to the game.

its not the best player who always wins the brownlow, its the one that polls the most votes.

it does usually go to one close to being the best because basically to win, you need to be an outstanding player in your team, play consistently above your team members and have your team win the majority of games.

Often you get players who have outstanding seasons in a team that wins the majority of games, such as say Brad Hardie, who did have an exceptional year and was clearly the standout for his team.

Other teams that have good years often have several players play at a high standard so the brownlow votes get shared around a lot, its not that common to have a premiership team have a brownlow medalist because often the 'work' is careid by many, but this rule can be generally thrown out hte window when its an even year and the brownlow goes for say 21 or 22 votes. as opposed to years when the brownlow goes for high 20s.

Woewodin won it. Bartel > Woewodin.
and...... he had a great year but i know bartel is truely outstanding this year, but what about kerr, judd, harvey and other players that are in contention. i think they come before bartel

Brisbane & WCE have had this concern and have still managed their share of Brownlows in the past 6-7 years.

also wanganeen comes to mind in 93.

it depends on teh spread of points as well, there have been a few brownlows won with around 17 to 22 votes in previous years.

when cousins won in 05 it was an even field with him winnign with 20 points, his team mates were taking votes of him but tehre were few clear winners in other clubs.

when Judd won it he was clearly the most outstanding player on form at WCE in a good but developing team.

I would say when Harvey and crawford won their brownlows they were clearly the most outstanding players in their teams, as well as outstanding players by the competition.

For harvey to win it, he must not only be the most outstanding player at st kilda, but he requires other teams to have 'even' contributions by the players when they have success.

At the moment I would say Kerr and Judd are doing a burke and Harvey for WCE and performing at an outstanding level and are clearly the best players on form.

For harvey to 'beat them' harvey has to continue his form, AND have guys like glass, lynch, embley, 'steal' votes from Kerr and Judd.

Im not saying harvey is the best player in the leauge on current form, just teh reality of the brownlow counting system.

ie if you rated players out of 10 for a game, Kerr would still be leading the competition, but harvey would be dragged in to the field a little.

Could Harvey win the Brownlow ? Why not ? He's a classy player who has been doing it week in week out for ages. If he can stay fit maybe this will be his year !

Someone who is interested enough should check the time on ground numbers for him...then compare him to the blokes who are likely sitting pretty right now in the count.

been averaging around 80% game time.

I think he is marginally fitter than last year when he suffered a few niggling injuries.

You people are forgetting the one ingredient that's required in winning the Brownlow Medal. It is awarded to the Fairest and Best player for the home and away season.

You are all going on who is the best player but not taking into account who is the fairest as well. Harvey oozes fairness and his start to this year would see him being St Kilda's fairest and best player.

Going by the criteria of the Brownlow Medal I give Harvey plenty of chance this year if he continues the way he is going. I don't think he will but would be great if he did.

Proven vote getter who is playing very good football. He'd be well ahead in St Kilda's best and fairest right now, and as such would be a solid Brownlow Medal chance should he maintain his current form and St kilda start winning some games.

I hope he plays on next season. Without question, my favourinte non-Hawthorn player.

just discussing the mechanisms of vote allocation.

I think he got 30 odd for season 98, thats clearly an outstanding season.

other brownlows have gone for 17 votes in a season.

2006 - 15 votes (or 14) - Our leading vote getter
23 matches
Ave disposals - 20.
Ave 6 marks a game
18 goals

2007
6 games
Ave disposals - 23
Ave marks - 8
4 goals.

Considering he had an average year in 2006 but still managed 15 votes is bloody good. This year I'd say he'd be on about 5-6 votes.
However in his brownlow years he averaged 30 touches a game, IMO though he has a much better kick, takes more marks (ave 4 more a game), kicks more goals and also puts on more tackles than 10 years ago.

This is what astounds me ....on 06 and so far 07 form you would have to say hes actually improved the so called 'weaker' areas of his game - he kicks more goals AND takes more marks.......amazing at 35 hes still improving as footballer when many are struggling to remain contributors to their team.

might be something in a few seasons;)

I am betting harvey will be the next...um...er...um....HARVEY!!! with mebbe another 50 to 60 games under his belt.

that other young kid crawf looks ok, and HIrdy might be a decent player with a few games under his belt as well:thumbsu:

CHARGE OF THE GERI BRIGADE!!!! ONWARD! FORWARD!!! WHERES THE DEEPHEAT?

If everything goes right he could go top 10. Didn't do that badly last year.

As much as I love the man though, he'll be rotated off the bench too much and makes too many clangers with his short stab-passes. Hard to win the medal with little game time. Plus there's the risk that his hammy could go any minute.
