Countdown clock killed the suspense

To be brutally honest you should be able to press the red button or something on foxtel to choose between countup or countdown. Personally I liked the countup clock but I don't mind the countdown, as for clocks at the ground, always ALWAYS should be countup.

Yep, spot on. Knowing exactly how much time is left can auger fir the most thrilling finishes. Just look at all the buzzer beaters in basketball, great stuff. I remember one game where a player threw up a prayer and it went in with 2 seconds left and gave them a 1 point lead. A player then threw from behind centre and sunk it on the buzzer. Knowing the exact time made for an incredible finish, just as it did in the Lions v Cats game.
OJ Mayo followed by Tyreke Evans. Phenomenal. When Mayo hits the shot to take the lead with 1.5 seconds left a media guy starts walking on the court lol.

I think in some instances a countdown clock adds to the suspense but in MOST cases a countup clock is better. The classic example for me was the 2005 elimnation final against Geelong. When Nick Davis kicked that goal i thought there may have been 30-60 seconds to go. Hearing that siren go just after that centre bounce was nearly as thrilling to me as him kicking the goal. That excitement would have been lost if i knew the siren was about to sound.

not sure i really understand this logic. if you knew there were mere seconds remaining when Davis kicked at goal, wouldn't it have just made that goal even more thrilling? the loss of excitement from knowing the siren was about to sound is just shifted back to the final seconds, if that makes sense (it's late and i'm tired, so it may very well not)?

Commentators would then need to make sure they don't reveal how much time there is left if there was to be such a feature on Foxtel.

Being at the game, I actually preferred the suspense of not knowing exactly the amount of time that is left. Having said that, there was a Geelong fan who said there was less than a minute left after Hawkins kicked that behind. Not knowing that the siren was just about to go when McGrath marked made me go mental when he marked and dead silent when the siren went in suspense knowing the game was riding on that kick.

Countup was definitely better being at the Lions v Eagles game last year. That last quarter went for nearly 38 minutes. After 30 minutes with the Eagles 2 goals up I thought we were just about to lose and it makes the win even sweeter and more suspenseful waiting for the bloody siren to sound (when we were winning of course). Also Polkinghorne went for goal in that game instead of kicking it to Brown because he thought the siren was just about to sound.

Also knowing exactly how much time was left did kill the suspense on TV after Staker kicked the winning goal against Essendon this year. Really wished I could've travelled down to Melbourne for that game.

Brutal indeed

You do make sense and i understand where you are coming from. But i disagree with you.

Knowing there is only 2 seconds left might make it slightly more exciting, but to my mind it's not worth it considering you lose the FULL excitement of not knowing when the final siren will sound. Re-watch the crowd reaction when Davis kicks that goal and ask yourself if it was possible for the crowd reaction to be much more intense if they knew for certain there was only a few seconds left. Then watch the crowd reaction after the siren goes. That reaction (which still would have been manic after an amazing win) would have been greatly muted in my opinion if everyone knew the game was as good as over as soon as that goal was kicked.

To me, there is no feeling like the sound of that final siren only seconds after you hit the front, and if you know it's about to sound you lose some of that magic. Everyone is different though, and if you read the above comments a lot of people agree with you. I don't, and it was that elimination final that solidified in my mind my preference for the count up clock. There is no right and wrong answer on this. Everyone's opinion is right for them.

I love the countup clock for the close last quarters. Seven and Fox should apply the countup clock if looks like its going to be a close game in the final quarter. Mind, that would have meant that it wouldn't have been put into place for the lions-cats.

For the first three quarters and for blowouts though, couldn't care less.

Last night would have been a good game for the countup clock, knew the game was already over before Heppell's goal but with the countup it would have seemed more exciting/definitive IMO. Le Cras' goal also would have felt more momentous.

Agree with this.
