So going by this report today, anyone over 65 is not even worth discussing because they are simply too old.

Also as long as you don’t have obesity or diabetes (which thankfully are both very rare conditions in Australia) you should be all good.

I always tell my kids, If you want to be the best, then compare your results with the best.
Why should we have to compare Covid with the worst performing state like NSW?

This shit is affecting everyone in different ways, it’s bouncing around from state to state, family to family causing chaos and hurt and no ones issues are more important than someone elses.
We shouldn’t be fighting over it, that’s causing more stress and pain to everyone...how utterly draining to be angry and fight over this on top of everything else. We are ALL Australians and should stick together.

But much more importantly we are all Eagles supporters 💙💛💙💛💙

There was 46 deaths in NSW alone in the last 24 hours.
Today's literally the deadliest day in Australia since the pandemic started.

And it hasn't peaked.
Just a bit of context on this, it's mostly unvaccinated and elderly. I started following the epidemiology reports from NSW Health to get a better idea of how things are over here. The public releases lag by about three weeks but it appears as though vaccinations are preventing infection from Delta better than Omicron, deaths start to pick up for vaccinated people at 80+ years of age and for unvaccinated people at 50+ years of age, with the death rate for both groups dropping significantly since the emergence of Omicron (although deaths have picked up so I'm curious to see how this changes since case numbers have spiked at a higher rate but now not all cases will be reported).

Tell me where your garden is Wosh. I have some tears to shed.
Come on over mate, I’m about to have a nice lunch under my tree and read something relaxing like the flat earth thread.

So you know what lies ahead and can deal with it hopefully in a better way than Dom & Scott did

I'm shocked that Jack Darling is an idiot.
This is such a sad take. I'm not anti vax but there's no cause for celebration or name calling of people losing their careers over their personal vax stances. The premier also admitted they do little to stop the spread of Omicron, so its not like he is a danger to the public at large.

Please summarise this and send it to our CHO, McGowan and the media. Sounds like you have more of an idea than they do.

And there you have it. Julius McGowan is stark raving mad. Batshit.
Have seen these hot takes flying around social media (along with the inevitable clown emojis). Do you have any sort of substantive criticism of the decision to delay reopening? Because the reason for the delay was quite clearly explained. When they named the roadmap to reopen the Delta variant was the dominant variant in globally and in the eastern states, now the dominant variant is somewhat milder but also much more contagious. We also have increased evidence that a booster shot significantly reduces the risk of severe infection and death.

If people want to argue that they're willing to put a huge burden on the health care system and bring a drastic increase in Covid deaths among West Australians in exchange for the freedom to travel interstate and have friends and family visit from interstate, that's a reasonable argument. We've already seen the impact of opening up on other states. A woman in NSW had to resuscitate her stillborn baby as her husband drove to the hospital because they couldn't tell her when an ambulance would be available. Victoria's hospital system is Code Brown for the first time ever. Supply chain problems have become commonplace due to sick employees who have to isolate. Scotty is pushing for teenaged forklift drivers. These are impacts of letting the virus run roughshod that McGowan and the WA government are trying to avoid, and this has been repeatedly and clearly explained. Acting like he's a power-mad despot does nothing to address these very real concerns.

South Australia was, in early December, in a similar position to WA. No Covid in the community, no Covid in the hospitals, no deaths. Now they're recording about 5000 new cases a day, about 300 people are in hospital, and they've had nearly 60 deaths. Indoor hospitality venues are restricted to one-quarter of normal capacity, outdoor venues one-half capacity, indoor fitness classes are one-seventh of normal capacity (one-half for outdoor), seated food and beverage consumption only, gatherings at home are capped at 10 people, dancing is prohibited except for weddings, hospitals have had to cut back on things like clinics and non-urgent surgeries, ambulance ramping has become very common, and police have had to act as paramedics and ambulance drivers because of illness and unprecedented demand for ambulance services. So this is what the world would be like in WA if we reopened now.

And believe me, I want to reopen. My parents and my wife's parents live interstate and we just had a baby. They're desperate to meet their grandchild and I'm very keen to see my parents for the first time in nearly 3 years. But my personal view is that from an overall public health and economic perspective, it's better to get youth and booster numbers up before letting the virus rip through the community. Reasonable arguments can be made against this. "Dictator McMaoan at it again lol" is not a reasonable argument.

True.

But then you have the flow on effects too. Surgeries cancelled, school delayed, businesses struggling more now than during peak lockdowns etc etc etc

The initial comment we were responding to was about a low death count, but deaths are just the tip of the iceberg.

EDIT: What Ilkka Sinisalo said!

Ah, the revamped 'I'm not racist but...'

We have every right to label Jack Darling an idiot for being anti vax, because we have not yet been told that he has a legitimate medical reason to not get vaccinated (and thus avoid the AFL's requirement to continue playing AFL).

I feel for his family - but not for him.

Ironically it's most likely the influence from his partner that has lead to his decision

What if it was his family that drove him to make this decision?

The reasons for the lockdowns were the potential for unnecessary deaths and overcrowding hospitals. If those risks can be mitigated then those items you listed shouldn't happen. There will be interruptions as the virus spreads but as long as McGowan does it in a more controlled manner than the greedy bastards over here, you should be able to get through it much better than we have. That said, I suspect life will be reasonably normal here in a couple of weeks when school returns.

This is correct. I read somewhere that in Canada (maybe in Alberta?), unvaccinated people aged 18 to 29 are more likely to die from a Covid infection than vaccinated and boosted people in their 80s.

The problem is that unvaccinated and the elderly still put an enormous burden on paramedic and hospital services. And this has a flow-on impact, i.e. people who have actually done their bit for the community and have gotten vaccinated and boosted are forced to drive themselves to the hospital during a heart attack, or see their important but non-urgent surgery cancelled because the hospital is overloaded with people like Jack Darling who are getting all their information from facebook and Joe Rogan podcasts.

Which I guess is why the lockdown was extended. To get more people boosted before opening the floodgates.

Personally, I think the genie is already out - a couple of mystery cases of omicron in the past week or so indicate it's silently spreading at the moment.

Which would make last night's announcement irrelevant.

Either way, no matter your stance - just get f***ing vaccinated and boosted. And don't do a Jack Darling.

Good post, thanks for speaking some sense in amongst some of the trash that’s being thrown around. I think most level headed people can agree that it’d be nice to be able to travel and visit people, but sometimes public interest has to take precedence over self interest.

Imagine if the banhammer didn't come down on certain posters when it did.

Bullet dodged.

At least PID can update his username to 'Darling is Done' when he gets out of BigFooty jail

Obesity is very rare in Australia? We might have suffering definitions of rare

Edit: evidently I've misread the tone. Whoops.

I can’t even laugh at Mundy for not retiring. Every year I think he will start slowing down and his skills will deteriorate, and every year he is still a great player. Who knows, maybe he’ll play til he’s 100. I also don’t mind him carrying on because he’s a great kick and seems to be a really good bloke in general.
