McGowan giving a speech now, hopefully a snap lockdown to try and stop this outbreak.
I don't know if your joking, but there would legitimately be riots if that guy went from cancelling the border opening to taking us back to lockdown.

I'm wondering if this is all just a political ploy to save face. Cancel the border while assuming local spread will lead to an outbreak. Then say its not your fault as you tried by delaying the border closure. If so, makes him an even bigger dickhead.

I'm one of those i left Perth in 2006, my work life is in Melbourne, and i try to get back to Perth once a year to see my parents, have no idea when that will happen now, despite being triple vaxxed.
My sister lives up the road here in W A . I haven't seen her in over 6 years . There is no rush . We still love each other the same and text one another occasionally .

I wonder how many of the vocal expat west Aussies are the ones that left before covid existed, because it was saaah boring and it was way cooler to go try and live the life in Melbourne or Sydney? They got used to Perth always being there when it suited them to come back and visit. I’m sure they could come back and live if they wanted to??
I left in 2014 May, I dont regret the move.

The only thing holding me back is my parents live over there. But to be honest I dont really miss the pace of live over there. Have spent time living in : Brisbane, Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne and the only thing I guess weighing on my mind moving back is - living with my parents who are relatively old.

Im not an 'outdoors' type of person, for which WA is well known for.

You’d riot, would you?

A week or two of no gatherings, indoor dining or events, then back to a covid-free lifestyle for a few more months? How awful.

Anyway it’s not happening, omicron + events + masks seems to be the new norm.

But I don’t think it’s unreasonable to be disappointed that we can’t just keep doing what has worked well for WA the past couple of years.

For those in favour of opening the border, what do you expect to gain (apart from the family reunions) but once those are done, what other benefits for the wider community will there be?? More toilet paper? I just can’t see how anything changes for the better. We’ve had it so good here for a long time, that the only way is down unfortunately

Footy games?

Don't underestimate the value of business. Reading from The West, that has an impact on supplies, stock etc

As predicted - difficult to see how we come out with with COVID zero again short of another lockdown.

February 5 back on?
Unfortunately a lock down might be on the cards now that the border has been delayed. It made sense to not bother when we were opening Feb 5 but now its been pushed back, potentially by several months, a lock down would be sucky but completely understandable if we truly dont want a large outbreak before we open.

Education, tourism (not that its going crash hot at the moment). It brings in money for the economy as much as we kind of underestimate it.

in NSW and QLD anyway, they are letting in students without quarantine, which is a huge difference to what WA is doing . Im not saying either is better, i just respect what the governments has to do for each state but its clear that the state premiers have more influence in this pandemic than the prime minister/Federal level at the moment.

Workers, going both ways.

Okay so McGowan hinted pretty heavily that exemptions could be made to sportspeople coming into the state, home games hanging by more than a thread?
Did he? I gave up on the conference pretty quickly but I thought it was said that he wasn’t interested in making exceptions for sports?

Interesting position to be in, we’re still keeping the border (effectively) shut indefinitely to keep Omicron out, while the current Omicron cluster keeps growing. Will it get out in the community to the point that the Govt decides resistance is futile and re-reverses its decision?
I reckon there is the possibility of Omicron grows , into the 100's or 1000's the government (McGowan) may be forced to open and admit that is uncontrollable.
I genuinely don’t know how I’d feel about it if I was living in WA, I know the last 2 years in Vic have been a hell of a nightmare for many people and I’d rather have my freedoms now with the vast majority of us vaxxed, than months on end away from my family and friends.

I know it’s petty when things are so hard but geezzzzzzuzzzzzzzzzz I’ve missed going to the footy, 3 generations of us have been going now since the Eagles started either to games in Perth or here. We really miss it.
Sport is a big thing for Western Australians. In Sydney especially the people dont care so much about sport. Hence why you see attendances at Scorchers/Eagles/Freo /Wildcats always packed and interest in the community.

I dont want to rub it in but in the last 12 months- I have been to the SCG (4 times), Manuka Oval and I would still love to attend more.

And I've been to the AFL Grand Final.

I hate to say it but this decision I think impacts more the interstate players of Freo and West Coast. Just means they probably cant see their families during these short trips. I heard for instance Freo players now probably cant go to see the funeral of Harley Balic.

I mean we all saw what happen to Adam Cerra, state borders was also a reason why Lachie Neale was considering moving back closer to WA.

If Freo and West Coast have to give up a few home games to get the AFL season continuing, I think everyone in the league would be appreciative of what they are sacrificing. (Who knows maybe a chunk of March and a bit of April ). With no certainty of borders reopening even by April, they may be doing what the Scorchers are doing- and playing all their games in the East Coast (which would be a bad result for WA fans but you do anything to sacrifice to get the season going)

Not rubbing it in, having lived over 20 years in WA and over 20 years in Victoria I know what sport means to people, especially footy. It’s always been a huge part of our family. Hopefully we all get to games this year.

Well since the Eagles anyway…before that, meh.
