Gaining traction.

I don't think they'll need to do much to shift the shiftable. Hunt said recently that it's already risen to 77% who intend to get jabbed. Delta and a never ending Sydney lockdown will do the rest of the work for the government.

This is not surprising. Of course people will feel crap. They are under house arrest and many have lost their job.
I'd love to see similar stats on whether there is a difference between whole country lockdowns and localised lockdowns. I suspect that negative mental health outcomes would be greater in localised ones as there is a tendency to compare your plight with those around you. I know I've been helped by being an expat with a Facebook feed from all around the world and at every stage I've had friends in both better and worse situations than me.

I think Dan's rhetoric around running the strongest most macho harsh ring of steel lockdown was a mistake and detrimental for that reason. People felt like they were going through way worse than anywhere else and thus their feelings made it a reality that their lockdown was more brutal.

Meanwhile people in Sri Lanka and several other places hadn't been allowed to cross their front doorstep for months and were dreaming of what had become luxuries like outdoor exercise or visiting a supermarket.

I really don't know what the benefit was of telling everyone that they were going through way harsher restrictions than everywhere else. Particularly as it wasn't true. I just think it would have increased mental health issues as well as increasing resentment towards the restrictions.

Just to explode the myth that the anti vaxxers/conspiracy theorists were peddling earlier this year.

It's good that all 3 new cases were all linked and in isolation.

There's (as yet) no new cases from the new case discovered on Wednesday which I presume means that the person's partner has not tested positive so far. Hopefully this bloke is one of those people who are not very infectious to others. Fingers crossed.

Mrs J had her 2nd Pfizer shot (yep not the awesome AZ vaccine) yesterday and she has a sore arm...

Visited a client today who told us that one of his Sydney staff is in hospital with COVID. He's in his early 40s and was hospitalised 8 days after diagnosis.

The risk of COVID might be hard for some to get their heads around but that all resets when someone you know is fighting for their life.

Just get the jab with whatever vaccine you can get everybody. It won't stop the spread of Delta, but for you it will be just the flu.

Vietnam's previous lockdowns were stricter, more effective and thus got cases to zero a lot quicker than Melbournes did. Against Delta though, their strict lockdown has seen numbers rise to 7000 cases a day quickly and they're still rising.

Sydney stuffed up by not locking down straight away, but at the moment, going by what is happening in other countries, they're actually doing a good job by having the numbers rise so relatively slowly.

I feel like screaming every time I see people still saying ‘it’s just like the flu’ or it only affects people who are old, ill, unfit or were born on the third Sunday of the month. Infuriating that deniers still can’t accept the dangers of this virus.

There are people in the US who think the colour of your skin is a factor!

Edit: just saw SR refer to it as the flu. But for the vaccinated. :)

I have a confession to make.

It all started turning to sh*t around the country the day after I booked my trip to Noosa.

I'm a Kirby.

Probably the contract tracing.
Here in the Philippines, majority of Shopping Malls & individual shops (Starbucks etc) are using paper lists to record your name & contact number. Doubt any follow up happening.
Averaging 5,000 new cases per day

Sydneys contract tracing must be bloody good. Twice they snuffed out and got decent outbreaks back to zero without lockdown. A lot of cities have tried, but very few places have pulled that off even once and the ones which have have been in East Asia with very rule abiding populations.

Unlike Philippines, Vietnam had been paragons of virus control virtue before they encountered this new strain.

Fleeting contact transmission is rendering any form of lockdown short of getting people into isolation ineffective at elimination - it's just flattening the curve.

Quoted for emphasis.

  • Yes, it is like the flu in that both influenza and SARS are viruses.
  • Yes COVID is more likely to kill you if you're over 60.
  • Yes many COVID cases are asymptomatic.

Having said all that, there is nobody in NSW currently on a respirator because of the flu, the chart below shows the COVID figures:

There have been no signs that link the flu with cognitive decline:

There are people in this online community who no longer post in this thread that have disputed the seriousness of COVID or have questioned the state's motivation for wanting to vaccinate people.

I invite them to respond to this. (* I do not consider responding with a thumbs-down, laughing, or angry emoji a valid response)

Of all the nonsense from people who are anti vaccinations, the biggest nonsense is that vaccines, which pass through your body without reproducing, are more likely to have long term consequences than covid, a virus which can reproduce and infect a large number of your cells. I'm not worried about the long term consequences of either, but I know which one we should be more concerned about.

This thread is quiet today, maybe its because everyone fainted after the Murdoch press wrote a positive article (albeit with a negative headline) on Dan today AND a cartoon showing him in a positive light.
OF course the letters and comments section of the Hun is still a shitshow but at least its something!

You have a Gov't paycheck right.
No problems for you.
Lockdown or no lockdown you get that nice little pay deposited into your account every fortnight.
Easy for you to criticize people who are not happy with lockdown.

I bet if you were told that during lockdown you won't be paid then you would be singing a different tune.

Hey, you're ok. F**k the rest of the people.

"Close sh*t" "Shut it all down" "It's not essential"

Easy to say when you have a guaranteed tax payer funded income.
Sydney going great guns. Lucky Gladys listened to you.

Hope the IPA's are just hoppy enough. Good to see you round.
Thanks mate.
The Clarko news got me excited so I logged on. Checked the alerts and there is good old Otto having a crack at me for having a job. Clearly I should have avoided further education and just gone the hard road like him.
Must be wonderful to be right all the time.
Anyway, Gladys has stuffed it all up, but let’s hope she has finally realised what needs to be done.

Do you have a link to this? That I'd like to read/see.

New reports that Delta is more infectious that Chickenpox.

jmac70 - what's in the fridge for the weekend? I got a box of singles yesterday evening that I'm starting to go through tonight.
