Its not as simple as just copying what other countries have and are doing. Countries have employed a raft of different measures and it's not yet possible to say with confidence whivh measures have been effective and which haven't. Additionally different countries have different climatic conditions and different levels of exposure which may affect the spread, so a slow spread may have had nothing to do with their measures.

Its easy to focus on the high profile measures that some countries have employed, like shut downs and lockouts and then demand they are necessary, but most experts are focussing on lower profile things like hygiene and tracking and isolating cases and their contacts. The virus isnt a mysterious demon lurking around avery corner, it exists in a set number of cases.

What are your thoughts on the 31,000 Chinese students that managed to make into the country for uni this morning by flying to a non-restricted country first?
Lock the Goddamn borders!!

Do you think people just guess when they suggest that's what we should be doing OR do you think it's because they've witnessed other countries succesfully implement these measures (Hong Kong, Singapore etc...)?

It depends on who the people are and the science behind it. For instance if the science doesn’t support it and the decision would have adverse economic impacts then the decision will prove detrimental and the flip side is it costs people’s lives.

I’m only strong on you not considering the economic impacts of your stance which was abundantly clear with your original post. All else should be left up to people with far superior knowledge on the issue than us.

Delay start of season and have a 17 round season....everyone plays each other once. Perfect opportunity to test how that would impact economically on an AFL season and would be the first "fair" season since the inception of the 18 team competition.

What about push season back to October

Research by the WHO suggests that if a country bans 99.9% of international flights it just delays the peak of the virus by 42 days. It doesn't stop it.

So might as well keep things Normal to get it out of the Way

Caulfield races now a lock out; looks like everything with 500 plus people will be ruled out.

The only responsible thing to do is to cancel our first month of difficult games, then schedule us in for the GF at the MCG against the GC.

I agree with that. My initial comment was coming from the view point of, "it's just sport... is it that important?!".
Whether the AFL is played in 2020 is not going to shut our economy down... It will for some people and that sucks for them but i'd prefer society to live.

Suns' games unaffected then?
They will play off with GWS for the flag this year.

AFL get their dream final.

Locking the borders has serious economic ramifications and is an over the top reaction. Selectively restricting entry is far more sensible. I have heard nothing about the 31000 students entering via another country, but find it hard to believe that such a large number would think to exploit this loophole nor do I believe that Australian authorities would fall for such a mass ruse.

"Figures from Department of Home Affairs show 31,196 Chinese students have now arrived in Australia since mid-February. The students have been arriving at a rate of about 1000 a day, according to The Sydney Morning Herald."

That's why we need to look out for each other and look after ourselves.

It's going to be a difficult year, but we'll come out of this stronger once it's over.
The selfish panic buying and opportunistic selling of toilet paper and other goods speaks volumes to me about how Australians will look out for each other.

OK. In that case, Australian authorities are indeed more stupid than I thought. It also does not surprise me that the students have sought to circumvent the ban placed on their entry to this country.

There we have it folks, no mass gatherings over 500 for non-essential activities from Monday.

I, for one, applaud the gov't. Mind you... They're saying they "advise" it... They don't sound like they're enforcing it at this point.
