Our economy hasn't been great in the years leading to covid-19 and it has now taken a big hit.

It will be a long grind back to economic health but I believe we're better equipped to ride this out than most other countries.

Whilst there's no doubt we'll be a little poorer at the end of this, in many respects we'll be better off if we use this opportunity to tear some of the ugly band-aids off.

I can see how much you feel shackled by this TGG, but just like Woodfrog's crust, it's not all bad. We'll get there eventually but I hesitate it won't be in a timeframe of your liking.
We may never get back to economic health. We are a country with little other than raw resources to sell other countries, though if our currency continues to slide due to our economic outlook, one day we may be able to revitalise our industries again as our wages are rendered worthless by a devalued currency and we find ourselves targeted for offshore manufacturing. If we ever were a lucky country, we are fast becoming the banana republic that Keating once predicted we'd become. It's a myth to believe we are in a situation to ride this out through long term isolation because of the depth of our country's wealth.

Sorry this is garbage.

The simple things in life are often the best..........

Reminds me of that Pendles and Daisy GIF, with JB007 as Pendles and Tje Gimp as Daisy.

Just don't use the word 'simple'. It might trigger another rant about the glories of sumblest.

I'm not under any illusion about the challenges that we face and how quickly things can go pear-shaped.

As it stands Australia's economy is the world's 14th largest and is rated AAA with a stable outlook by all three global rating agencies. Hence my point that we're better placed than most others to survive this.

There may never be a full recovery in our lifetimes but predicting doom is just as accurate as predicting bliss. Neither is likely.

There is a melodramatic element to many of my posts and perhaps this was one such post. Flamboyance is one of my coping mechanisms just as pessimism is my default position. But I do believe the best of our economic fortune has past us, particularly if we persist with restrictions that put the brakes on our economy long after other countries have moved on

You are entitled to your opinion as I am to mine.

For a start, relative currency values do not necessarily indicate the underlying strength of an economy. The AUD in particular is oft-considered a risk proxy so cops it when equity markets get hammered, not to mention resource prices.

I am sure my chicken curry is just as tasty and complex to cook as many of the dishes displayed by your top 10 members. (It's also equally good with beef) I say sack the judge.

When you don't manufacture much at all and import a lot of manufactured goods. When your biggest export -mining - is reliant on a strong global economy. When a couple of your other major exports - tourism and education - rely on foreignors being able to enter the country. Things could get tough.

I hope TGG is wrong, but he might not be.

Too many people in this country have an overly inflated view of it's worth. This is even apparent in this thread with the numerous comments about how lucky we are to be in a position to absorb the extremely generous handouts and continue restrictions till we have eradicated the last bit of virus from our population. And then keep the doors closed till a vaccine is available and the virus has disappeared from the rest of the world. Personally, I don't share the belief that we are in such a privileged position to absorb all the spending and lockdown of the country for 18 months. I also don't really appreciate my posts being labeled as garbage. It's not something I would do to another poster.
