Unfortunately, that dude's story is starting to sound pretty sketchy and likely to end up as ammo for anti-vaxxers. From what I've gathered, Rolling Stone's fact checkers sh*t the bed.

Unsurprisingly a story that smelled like bullshit from the start turned out to be bullshit. Interesting that it was so quickly spread by people who rail against misinformation but who didn't stop for a second to check if something they wanted to be true actually was.

Also funny how the news report still hasnt been retracted. The hospitals have put out their own statement saying nobody has been treated for ivermectin overdoses and there is no overcrowding or backed up hospitals. Had the News outlet actually spoken to the hospitals they reported on they would have known this but it wouldn't suit the narrative so they just ran with an unresearched story and got everyone jumping on board a lie.

Just a word of caution for the many of us that are pro-vaccine.

Firstly, you don't change peoples minds by hurling abuse at them - the community health improves when more people who are at risk are vaccinated.

Secondly, vaccination only works when the balance of risk is in its favour. In the case of the COVID vaccines, it would be remiss to simply accept that they are absolutely safe. They do have know side effects, potentially fatal as well as what are unknown risks for a vaccine that is in it's first instance of use.

For adults, the balance of risk is pretty clearcut - some hundred fold benefit for vaccination of known benefits v risks. (the multiple changes depending on age)

For healthy kids though - that benefit isn't necessarily there - in fact the known potential for harm and and potential benefit is pretty minimal and based at this stage on a trial of 2200 children in the US (so a very small sample size).

But again - "kids" isn't homogenous. For kids with immune issues or other complications - the benefit of vaccination is the same as older adults - it is really clear cut that they should be vaccinated.

My fear here in WA is that healthy children will be forced to be vaccinated to act as a shield for the community benefit - but not their individual benefit. Whilst I am not opposed to that - it already happens with vaccines like Gardasil, those vaccines usually have many years of data to show long term safety.

The problem of course with reasonable concerns on vaccine long term safety is you get thrown in then anti vaxxer bucket. There doesn't appear to be middle ground. Luckily the UK version of Atagi must be "anti vaxxers" too.

As an FYI - i won't be vaccinating my kids until they get to 16/17 or unless my doctor suggests their medical history pre-disposes them.

As another FYI - i booked in my vaccination within 30 minutes of being eligible.

edit: I should add that if the data/evidence changes on healthy kids, then so to would my decision.

The link to the article now has an altered headline, sub header and disclaimer at the top regarding the statement from the hospital.

I don't mind that actually, rather than nuke the article they can correct the error when people continue linking to it.

Pretty generic observation that Islam is a religion (not a race people ffs) and people who follow that religion aka "Muslims" have different cultural norms to countries such as ours and the US and UK and other "western" cultures which have separation between church and state and are not, you know, atheist. Hardly a comment that was worthy of Badge low key calling a poster a racist, which is exactly what he intended to do. The racist dog whistle wasn’t the totalitarian part, it was the part where the poster started going off about those bloody Muslims and not wanting life how we have it here in the west.

The only people I’d mentioned were people throwing their kids to foreign soldiers so they could save them and remove them from an actual totalitarian regime.
