Feel for Hunt and Renshaw, only a 18-24 months ago Henry Hunt was all but selected now not even in the Australia A line up. Renshaw the most runs by an Australian before turning 21/22. Came back in in the subcontinent batting middle order, then we turned to Cameron Green. Then Mitch Marsh came in and Smith opened the batting. Now a new shinny 19 year old has come through…

Personally I would line up;
Khawaja
Hunt
Labuschange
Smith
Head
Marsh
Carey
Starc
Cummins
Lyon
Hazelwood

In the next 2 years with the stick, Konstas for Kahwaja, McSweeney/Renshaw for Smith, Green for Marsh

Still few matches before the Test series. If Hunt can add a few more big scores (already has a ton) he might be a late addition to the next Aus A match and maybe even the first Test. But McSweeney has stood up in this game, 131 balls faced for his 39 when everyone else fell around him. Could be called up if he continues his form.

I don’t disagree with what you’re saying, I am of the belief Openers open, middle order batsmen should do an apprenticeship at 6, Keepers bat at 7… To open or bat at three is similar but not the same, the mindset of an opener is different to batting at three, four or five.

I also believe your best bat bats at three to recover after a quick wicket early, or to guide and manipulate the innings.

We're talking about the Aussie selectors here. All that goes out the window lol

Hunt 62 today in the Shield game vs Vic. Lehmann yet another duck.

Marcus Harris made 36 in Australia A's second dig. That should get him a spot in the First Test. Nathan McSweeney is 47n.o. following his 39 in the first dig but McSweeney plays for South Australia so his chances are slim.

If McSweeney does make the Test side and Head and Carey survive that might be the first time since the days of the Chappell brothers and Rowdy Mallett that SA has had three players in an Australian Test team.

I'm not so sure - if McSweeney finishes 80 not out, I'd say he's a huge chance of making his Test debut.

Looks like India will be arriving in Australia after a win in the final Test against NZ. The Kiwis are 9 for 171 in their second innings - a lead of just 143. But the Indian batting has been vulnerable throughout this series, so anything may yet happen. The only certainty is that there will be a result, as this is only day 3.

You are probably right. I have this thing about Eastern States players getting the nod over the rest.

I have been racking my old brain trying to remember the last time SA had three players in the Test side. The best I can come up with is Ian Chappell, Greg Chappell and Ashley Mallett in the days before Greg defected to Queensland. Terry Jenner also played some Tests around that era so he might also be included.

Here we go, Ian Chappell, Greg Chappell, Terry Jenner and Ashley Mallett all played for Australia in the First Test against the West Indies in Brisbane from Nov28 1975. I suspect that Greg Chappell may have defected to Queensland by then. G.S. Chappell made a century in each innings in that Test. Looking at the scorecard the West Indies only played two pace bowlers in Roberts and Holding which was a rarity for those days. Geez, I am going back almost 50 years, I am ****ing old.

Greg chappell went to captain Qld for the 1973-74 season.

Last time 4 SACA players played for Oz was in the West Indies in the March/April 1972/73 series. Lillee broke down, Jeff Hammond played all 5 tests, Terry Jenner played the last 4 and the 2 Chappells played all 5 tests.

I wrote about this almost 3 years ago in this thread and a couple of tests that 4 SACA players played in the 1960s including one in 1967/68 when PAFC footballers Hawke and Freeman opening the bowling for Oz in one of the tests vs India.

In 1968 tour of England 5 SACA players played in test matches. Hawke in 1st and 2nd, Freeman in 3rd and 4th and Mallet in 5th. Ian Chappell played all 5 and Barry Jarman missed the 3rd test with injury.

Next day I wrote this post linked below trying to find when was the last time there were 3 SACA players played for Oz.

Had to go back to that 70s period.

I just did a statsguru search and Blewett and Gillespie played 12 tests together but Lehman never played a test with both of the other 2 in the same team.

Carey has played 32 tests and I reckon Head has missed playing in 2 of those due to Covid and the stupid selection in India 1st test to play right handed Handscombe because the dopey selectors thought too many left handers was a problem.
