Made me think for a second so I like it. Bet you don’t like Cider as a nickname for Cummins either.

Rugby is a top tier football code - constant contest for possession, many varied roles combining, many different tactics and patterns of play, team discipline and collective effort rewarded - it’s a thing of beauty.

All those factors are unique to rugby in my opinion.
It's a bit soft these days, you can't do a tap dance on someone's back anymore without the ref taking exception.

Yes, like the afl there are certainly problems with the officiating.

One of my favourite players to watch was Daniel Grewcock, he would lose his shit at some oppo player or refereeing decision and get carded.

I liked Willie O back in day, his tackle on Uli Schmidt in Cape Town was epic.

The number of times video technology has to be played for saving a boundary. We are seeing in some games, the 3rd umpire having to replay a shot, 5+ times in some instances to determine if a player has stopped a boundary/touched the rope.

Yes I understand that we want the right decision but its slowing up the game by about 3-4 minutes for 1 ball.

As I continue to say…the 12th Man has so much material to work with and it’s just going to waste
If Birmingham was more into the footy he’d have had decades of material to go off, cometti, Bruce, bt, the footy show boys.

I reckon a hairpiece bit for the current commentators would do a five minute bit tops. It’d be a challenge for him to develop comic characters based on them though.

Mark Howard for example is ripe for a piss take but you do that at risk of giving him a personality.

My take is that Richie is watching from above lamenting the decline in commentary since his passing.

He takes the piss out of them all and complains to Kerry & Tony about anything and everything

The material writes itself;

Hair Hats
Brayshaw
Whately
Warner
Haydos
Slater

My impression of the Shield is that it's always a higher standard comp than the Champ - six teams versus eighteen means the floor is much higher. English/overseas players wouldn't get into a Shield XI these days even if the level dropped off dramatically. Unless they are Aus qualified of course.
This is a little while back but the stronger Vic Premier sides would have competed pretty well with a good portion of the counties. Especially if they had their state listed guys playing .

He’d said there’s less to go on with the likes of slats, and given the domestic violence etc he’s been charged with doing it doesn’t really lend itself to a light hearted send up.

That said I’d love an impression of Kerry okeeffe

To be fair the league commentators were easier because it was generally just one team doing most channel 9 games and Ray Warren had one of the most immitatable voices imaginable

The few afl bits he did were pretty funny though: the Tony Lockett head butting incident (where Peter caven head butted his elbow) etc and the tight shorts controversy for example

What would he send up though? O’Keeffe is a parody of himself.

Roy and HG once said something very astute about what makes themselves so funny and it’s that they make the trivial serious, and the serious trivial. And Billy Birmingham was very good at doing that in his parodies too. Making tiny little things the focus of his pisstakes. Little pronunciations, little background storylines that were a bit of a joke in real life and making them big things - the absence of max walker etc.

Kerry’s antics i think would maybe only make for a good pisstake if - and admittedly I can’t stand him - for example behind closed doors all the other commentators hated him or something

People thinking a pitch where 200 isn’t the par score is dangerous to bat on.

THIS.

One poster in the game thread said the guy following Ashton Turner should have refused to bat. The ball seamed about 6 inches and bowled him because he tried to hit it into orbit

He got the players to voice themselves for the tight shorts bit, he could have done a good spud frawley though I reckon. I’ve been meaning to use maxys line to Lou Richards about being as funny as a fart in an elevator for some time but haven’t found an appropriate juncture yet.

Satire is the basis for both acts…and I love both immensely

Can’t you imagine Richie flicking between 7 & Fox lamenting the muppets and then moving to the BBL at night with Commentary Teams not even at the ground or the bullshit segments “Which BBL player has the best hair” - Richie would be going off asking where are the Classic Catches or taking the piss out of Big Dos’s 🎩 or Punters Rug…

It was identical to a wicket I saw on a synthetic pitch on Saturday, playing the wrong shot to a straight one! Must have been a dangerous bit of concrete!!!

Yeah Johnny platten was in it as well. He’s said a few times I think that he wanted a bit of authenticity and couldn’t pull it off getting their voices down pat. He did the nrl footy fever part perfectly for that wired work of sports 2 album brilliantly. Also Dr Ray Lamp for the tight shorts controversy was incredibly voiced

I’ve used that line a LOT but the thing is…. It IS funny as long as you are the one dealing it lol.

Richie would be just like the Final Dig 12th man CD when Daryl Eastlake and Mike Walker were announced commentary team captains. Fall of his chair in disgust
