Harris once again out to a crap shot outside off, his flaws are the exact same as they’ve always been. Bancroft should have been out for lbw before his dodgy dismissal, again same flaw that’s always been there.

McSweeney has been in the best and most consistent form out of the 4 candidates and if he can take the opportunity here, should be firming for that opening position.
Neither Bancroft or Harris are the answer. Decent at 1st class level but they are not Test level.

Konstas probably needs a season with NSW ideally, but I would still pick him above Harris & Bancroft.

McSweeney looks the most ready & in the forn of his career. Looks like a no brainer. Hopefully he pushes his case tomorrow.

Not that it should come into it, but he's a handy bowler too

Given Marsh isn't bowling much these days, can't have enough part-time options.

Honestly, I think the only rational decision is to go with McSweeney, and work the batting order out later.
If the Aus A game was the audition, then he's taken the decision out of the selectors' hands.

He's currently 51no, having top scored with 39 in the 1st innings - for a total of 90 runs (and his 2nd innings is still ongoing). Konstas scored 16 runs, Harris 53, and Bancroft 16 - for a total of 85 runs between them. McSweeney has scored more runs than the 3 other contenders combined.

Only the Australian Test Selectors could **** it up from here!

Oh crap... the umpire swapped the ball and accused the Indian players of scratching it, then reported a player for dissent when they complained

This will blow up :(

In other news, McSweeney finished 88*

CA very quick to close the ball tampering accusation down

Nothing to see, case closed

Shot across the bows for the Indians

I wonder if we'll go with McSweeney?

I actually have a slight nagging doubt about him. Only because he has periods of very slow scoring at Shield level. I wonder whether he's a fraction limited and will get stifled at the next level?

Test quality players tend to dominate the level down.

However, he certainly has innings where he scores quickly too. And the Redbacks have often been in dire trouble let's face it. Might just be that he has gears to his game. Like a Michael Hussey - he could grind it out when needed, rotate the strike when needed, counter-attack when needed, up the ante when needed. Incredibly versatile game.

He couldn't have done too much more, and TBH most of our Test players aren't.rwally dominating at Shield level either

Ball Tampering just isn't considered as big a deal in the rest of the cricketing world. Worthy of a lengthy suspension yes, but not the full year ban and public shaming that happens here.

Still sad to see Cricket Australia immediately capitulate. There would have been no time to suddenly grow a spine than immediately after India got swept 3-0 by NZ in a home test series.

Since the start of last Shield season, he's made 1276 runs at an average of 49.07. That's a fairly extended period of very good form.

I’m not sure he’s in the squad for the Champions Trophy early next year, still needs time at the state level to find the right tempo for 50 over cricket.
It being in Pakistan helps his cause, watching Fraser-Maguirk he actually bats like a very un-Australian batter as he doesn’t bat well when there’s some bounce in the pitch, watching him in the IPL this year he likes those sort of pitches that stay a bit lower as he likes to go big in front of the wicket.
