Croad not part of Rawlings deal: Hawks

Hawthorn has confirmed it has spoken to forward Trent Croad about a return to Glenferrie after two years with Fremantle but says Croad would not be returning to the club as a direct replacement for Jade Rawlings.

Rawlings, third in the Hawks’ best and fairest in 2003, has quit the Hawks and wants to continue his AFL career with his younger brother Brady at the Kangaroos.

However the Kangaroos are unable to satisfy the Hawks demand for a “quality player” in return for Rawlings on their own, with the Hawks not interested in any of the players the Roos are able to offer.

That means the only way the deal can go ahead before Friday’s 2pm trade deadline is for a third club to become involved.

And there was intense speculation on Wednesday that Croad would return to Hawthorn as part of the deal, with Rawlings moving to the Kangaroos and Croad’s current club Fremantle then receiving draft picks from the Kangaroos.

However Hawthorn football operations manager John Hook said the Hawks would definitely not consider Croad as a suitable replacement for the much-improved Rawlings.

“It has nothing to do with the Rawlings deal,” Hook said of the Hawks’ bid to lure Croad back to his original AFL club.

“We have spoken to him (Croad) but there are about seven other blokes we are speaking to as well.”

Croad played 84 games for the Hawks from 1998-2001 and like Rawlings is capable as playing both as a key defender or a key forward.

But unlike Rawlings, his career has stalled in the past two years – which is why the Hawks will not agree to Croad being part of the deal to allow Rawlings to go to the Kangaroos.

Essendon's Mark Bolton may yet become a Hawk as part of the increasingly-complicated Rawlings arrangement.

Instead the Hawks are dealing directly with the Dockers, who are likely to ask for one of the Hawks’ top draft selections in exchange for Croad.

When Croad was traded by the Hawks at the end of 2001 to Fremantle – in exchange for the number one pick in the national draft (which the Hawks used on Luke Hodge), the decision outraged Hawks’ fans.

But since moving to Perth, Croad’s footballing stocks have dipped and this year he could manage only 18 goals from 17 games despite playing mainly as a full-forward while Hodge is fast developing into one of the AFL’s most exciting young players.

Croad, 24, is originally from Victoria and was recruited to the Hawks from the Dandenong under 18’s.

The Kangaroos meanwhile also confirmed that Croad was not part of the deal to secure Rawlings with football operations manager Tim Harrington surprised when told of such speculation on Wednesday.

Harrington said the Roos were continuing to work on several options to satisfy the Hawks’ demands ahead of Friday’s trade deadline – by getting another club involved in the deal.

“We are making progress. We’ve got to consider all possibilities,” Harrington said.

I can only assume that Fox Footy are smoking the sweet, sweet weed.

headcase croad + `medicare' koops = 9+11? Haha

I'd take that.
If we got those picks though that would give us picks 9,11 and 13.

Is there any chance that we would trade off 2 of the early picks for a decent player, or would we keep them for local talent.

Id take that.
I dont think the hawks would though
Well, you know.....Rawlings and pick 11 for Croad......when practically anyone would rate Rawlings ahead of Croad....yeah, they might be upset.
