Does Trent Croad have the wood on Cameron Mooney? Let's look at the last two matches:

R17, 2008
7 kicks, 3 handpasses, 5 marks, 1 goal and 1 goal assist.

R4, 2007
8 kicks, 1 handpass, 6 marks, 0 goals, 2 points and 1 goal assist.

In fact, Mooney has kicked just two goals in his last five matches against the Hawks. With Chapman, Varcoe and Stokes all not 100% fit, and Lonergan held goalless in the R17 clash for the only time all season, is the much-discussed weakness in the Hawks backline not going to be an issue? Is there a problem here for the Cats in figuring out how to kick enough goals?

Discuss.

Yeah im really not worried about our backline... geelongs forward line isnt any better. Its the midfield where its going to be won, if we win it out of the midfield we will win the game because of our forward line.

It will be won in the midfield. Key matchups for me is Ling v Mitchell and Sewell v Ablett. If one team wins both of these they will probably win the match.

that will be big, but for mine the real key it ottens..

he can push forward and when he does he needs a backman to man him, not a ruckman wandering in the backline. If blake can hold up his end in the middle and Otto can push forward its a huge advantage for us, we don't have a ripping forward line like they do, but they have a average backline at best

We've been hearing that all year from ignorant opposition supporters. I can assure you that Bomber and his troops aren't as daft as you mate, they will be giving Croad et al the utmost respect come Saturday.

I agree about Blake needing to hold his own, not too sure about Ottens as a forward but he would definitely cause headaches if Bomber had the luxury of being able to throw him down there...

Croad will beat Mooney if he plays on him all night.

A team with a defence that is average at best does not make a Grand Final.

Croad has an iffy foot regardless.

Mooney needs to lead him up the ground towards the middle of the field, and have Ottens drifting forward into the goalsquare against say a Gilham.

Mooney played well on GF day last season, and I think he'll lift again for the big one.

I would rate Croad far too good for Mooney. Terrific one on one and Mooney isnt exactly lightning fast nor a big tank wanderer that Croad couldnt go with for long. Croad's defensive skills should be more than adequate.

Problem is more Ottens i'd say. If Thompson goes in with a solid plan for Ottens he can kick 6. Hawks ruck divison isnt something he'd worry too much about knowing he has the ammo around all clearances.

I think you may underrate him a little on that regard. Either way, he needs to have a big motor and work his backside off presenting come Saturday.

To me, Geelong's forward line is most dangerous when you have Mooney leading up the ground, with Lonergan as the next target, with Chappy, Johnson and Stokes snapping at his feet.

Dermie made a good point today actually. Chappy organises the forward line for Geelong extremely well, and they'll need him to do so, considering we only kicked 12 goals against the Dogs.

Not saying he cant...but the true nightmare for a KP defender like Croad comes with repeated and multiple leads over a short period. Not many players of any ilk can go with that for long unless superfit.

From what i;ve seen Mooney presents often enough and in some games bloody well..the bloke can be a dangerous forwrd. BUT he hasnt the tank to double back on long V leads and extend his man. Thos multiple leads cripple any defender and whilst Mooney is as dangerous as any when leading on rails i reckon Thompson can leave Ottens home and cause all sorts of troubles. Might be a good game to trust Blake..use Mooney as a decoy and pump it in fast over Mooney into Ottens. Hawthorn's defence is their weakness...the second tall can kill them.

Wasn't he on Thurstons last year?

The bigger problem for the hawks is who is going to cover Ottens when he goes forward?

Ottens is a monster and we'd be VERY conscious of him if he went forward. Hodge would be required to drop in front wherever possible.

Would Geelong ever have Mooney, Lonergan and Ottens up forward at the same time? If they were dominating the midfield it would work, but I think we'd choke it up a hell of a lot if all those 3 guys were up there.

robbie campbell has big job tomorrow. if ottens goes forward, robbie has to go with him - remember, he has gone back to stand neitz and barry hall in the past.

that leaves renouf against blake, with a chop out from roughhead when he needs it.

in fact, ottens going forward may prove to be in hawks favour, as the above, i think, renouf and roughie could exploit blake.

Rob Campbell, Roughy, Croad or Gilham with Hodge chopping in.

Goalkicking ruckman vs Hawthorn in 2008 - (total goals/ vs Hawthorn)

Hale - 37/1 (2 games)
Hill - 19/0
Minson - 19/1 (2 games)
Jolly - 15/0
Ottens - 14/0

He is better value for you rucking. Will only play as a resting fwd.

Lonergan and Mooney kicked 1.1 between them in Rd 17. Don't expect that to happen again.

This point interests me Doris.

The game will be very different. Cats fans will be thinking Loners and Moons will kick more than 1.1 between them.

Hawk fans are thinking that Hodge, Sewell and Lewis will be MUCH more effective than last time.

Cats fans are thinking that Ling, Ablett, Milburn will extend the 11 point rd17 difference approximately 60 points in the GF

Hawk fans are thinking that Buddy won't have 2 quiet weeks in a row and will get his finals goal kicking average back to 6. (needs 11 goals for this)

But what I find most interesting about your comment, LLD, is that last year the port fans were thinking "We beat them in rd 20, we'll smash them in the GF". People assume that their team will amend the deficiencies in their game from last time.

I think that's the only advantage the hawks can take out of the rd 17 game is that it said to us we've got a lot of work to do. Had we won that I'd worry about complacency.

does croad have the wood on Mooney????? haaaaaaaahahahahahaha OF COURSE HE DOES CROAD is an A-grade player as oppose to Mooney who is a halfwit overated AVERAGE player playing in a great team.

CROAD >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> MOONEY

I'm not commenting on anything to do with the inclusions or Hawthorn, I just believe that those two players will contribute more for Geelong.
