CROWD v PORT

Remove this Banner Ad

I think the common excuse held by many on this thread, is that our Metro Melbourne members are simply not there (holding 50% or thereabouts of our current membership base). What about our Metro Melbourne support? I'm not just talking about the members, I'm talking about the supporters. I think the Tassie deal is an excellent commercial move (don't get me wrong), but it kills me to see Carlton and Essendon not having a detrimental reliance interstate. Perhaps I am wrong in thinking we have just as many supporters as they do? Just hurts everytime I travel to Tasmania. It is reminder that we aren't a part of the big boys (even though we are easily the most successful club in the modern era)

Compared to Carlton and Essendon

Carlton V Port Adelaide (in Melbourne)

2008: 29696
2007: 29678
2006: 18665
2005: 16371
2004: 22507

Essendon V Port Adelaide (in Melbourne)

2010: 29248
2008: 28409
2006: 29323
2004: 35711
2003: 35390

A 30,000 attendance would compare very favorably by comparison

I'll be there, and will be taking my 5 year old for her first game! (Wish me luck that I get to see much footy!)

I hope we can get a crowd of 25-30K as i think considering PA position and form there won't be many neutrals or port supporters making their way over. Will be a very pro Hawthorn crowd!

I'll be there and sitting in the sparsely populated MCC members on level 2 in front of the coaches box as per usual.

I'll be attending along with my Handbagger supporting brother. As a member of that privileged group of people waiting until middle age for MCC membership I was offered a chance to buy tickets for the MCC reserve, so we bought tickets and will be sitting in the MCC section for the first time ever, so quite excited at that prospect!

We have never beaten Port by more than 39 points. At the same time, they have embarrassed us at Aami stadium many times. I remember once by 117 points and that thug Primus punched Mitchell when he was on the ground over the ball. Would love to rip them up. Probably will just be 40 point win, but would love a car crash game.
Crowd will depend on the weather. Last year it pissed down at MCG for 21k, so more than that will be there.

I'll be there

Some really valid excuses for lower attendances have ben raised.

Employment, family commitments, community commitments, commitments to local footy, being a staunch paid up member even though you may reside interstate or in the country, the need to study, travel etc. etc.

Is there any wonder that Collingwood constantly get large crowds?!?!?!?!?

KOLO makes an excellent point. Hawthorn is something that means a hell of a lot to me, and a hell of a lot to all of you, and we'd be blind if we didn't admit to the massive growth the club has attained since Dicker and all through the Kennett years...but the reality is, whilst we can turn up in droves for the Geelong games, the Bombers games, and the other "big" matches where the hype is strong for both sides...we just don't pull a crowd to certain matches.

Why is that?

This is our heartland...yet we don't go to Etihad. It's two stops further on most train lines than the MCG.

We all watch with frustration as we see Port/Adelaide or Freo/WCE teams coming home with a wet sail in the final terms due to dodgy umpiring and a vicious home crowd full of volume...yet when these teams play the Hawks at the MCG, we can barely get 25k to turn up.

Why?

For me...I've never understood this? I'm still watching Buddy and Cyril. I'm still watching Hodgey and Sam do their thing?

Forget this constant statistical argument about where the Hawks members reside. If the MCG is within travelling distance, get along, members and supporters alike. Bring your scumbag Bombers mates along and pretend you forgot your wallet when you're at the bar.

Lets amp up the volume, and support our boys REGARDLESS of the opponent. REGARDLESS of the venue within Melbourne.

Lets start acting like one of the big boys now. We're almost there.

KOLO is dead right. We need to do more during these so called dead fixtures. God knows Collingwood and the like do.

The crowd factor has been addressed time and time again on this board for various reasons. The reality which I have accepted, as many other Melbourne based supporters have accepted, is that the HFC is a somewhat quasi-interstate club. Whilst I have not missed a game (Australia-wide) this season (due to sheer mania), the reality is, is that Melbourne-based Hawthorn supporters are not passionate enough when it comes to insignificant games. It is our weak Melbourne based supporters who only turn up to Collingwood, Essendon, Carlton (if played at the G) and Geelong matches, that has resulted in our club playing a ridiculously high number of games in Tasmania. We should not be playing more than 2 games a season at Tasmania (at most) but we are, and will continue to do so for another 5 seasons (our Melbourne based supporters should be embarrassed).

So for all those Melbourne based supporters, who complain that they don't see their club enough, take a look at this week's crowd which will not reach the 45k required to defeat the Tasmanian agenda.

Fantastic you have nothing else in your life other than going to the football, and I congratulate you on your ongoing support of the great Hawthorn football club.

As I have stated before, there are many reasons to not attend games. I haven't attended any interstate games because I work weekends and can't afford to go interstate and miss out on pay that many weekends.

I've missed 2 games in Melbourne this year, v Richmond as I was on cricket end of season trip and v Bulldogs because when I got home from work honestly couldn't be arse so I laid on the couch and watched it on Foxtel. I'll probably miss this week as well as I'm supposed to be working 6-3, so not sure its really worth the effort to see a bit of the second half, better to lock myself away, turn the phone off and watch it on delay. My girlfriend who is also a member will miss as she's away for the weekend, so thats at least 2 Melbourne based members who won't show. Not gonna make it to Carlton either, should make it to the dogs game.

What does the club miss out on by me not turning up other than not winning the crowd number pissing contest? They've already got my money.

While I respect those who can turn up to all the games and believe that there should be 1000 GF tickets should we make it put aside for a ballot of those who have attended the most games, not everybody can make it every week.

You also have to allow for those who play footy (I attempted a short comeback this year), who have kids who play football or other sports etc. Anything 30,000+ is an amazing effort.

Anyone who was hoping to rock up to the Carlton game without reserving a seat, get along to this instead...you'll have a choice of plenty and a more relaxed atmosphere for the kids if you have young ones.

Best pre-match address of the year! Packing my bag for the game now and it's only 10.00 a.m. If only there was a banner across my front door...

If you can only get to a certain amount of games per year, this is not one of the ones you will choose to attend.

Crowd exactly as expected, and in line with crowds that other strong teams would attract against Port.

That is definitely not true. Look at the crowds that Essendon (see year 2000), Carlton (when they were doing ok in the late 90s and early 00s) and Collingwood pull against these teams when they are in form.

How were Port travelling back then??

If they were top 8 now you could easily add 5-10k to yesterdays crowd.

I will never complain about our crowds again... I've accepted the fact that our metro based supporters are bitches.

No excuses for such a poor crowd. Disappointing.

KOLOKOTRONIS

Thought yesterday's crowd was good. Port contributed about 100 fans, which meant there were 27k Hawthorn fans there. We would get that much against alot of the lower ranked Vic teams eg: Bulldogs etc.

I guarantee you a heap of members struck a deal with their families to not attend home game v Port in lieu of going to next Fri's away game against Blues.
