It seems to me that Burton has entirely the wrong attitude to be thrust into the role he's been given. I can sort of understand their thinking, he's not qualified, but he's a smart guy, he has the potential to grow into the job and do really well at it and if it works he's not likely to be running elsewhere anytime soon. He's not the first guy thrown into a role he's not ready for, especially at a football club, I get that. The issue is if you're going to be in that position, you need to be a bit humble, admit you don't know everything and lean on others for advice and knowledge. Hell, even an experienced and qualified football administrator should still have those qualities. Burton, with his apparent arrogance and "I know everything" attitude is entirely the wrong type of person to throw into that sort of role and it's because of that attitude he's starting to fail.

So you've got a few options. Either Burton needs to re-adjust his attitude and admit he doesn't know everything, open the ears and close the mouth. You hire an experienced administrator to put next to him to keep him in check, or you just fire him outright....Or you could just ignore the problem altogether. Point is, something needs to change, because he is out of his depth.

He is not smart. That much has been made very clear.
He speaks with speed and intensity and uses cliche words that make it seem like he is smart, but his decision making has proven his lack of intellect. Only a fool gets conned by this type of person.

Or someone only using 5% of their mind

He's certainly not smart enough to know his limitations, which is dangerous in a senior management role.

He is a poor decision maker & poor leader, which makes him unsuitable for & damaging in his current role.

We are setting a very low bar if we are thinking Burton is Smart, unless you mean he is acting like Nigel - that I agree with, both are in way over their heads.

Re N Smart, from talking to people outside the Club he doing a good job at the Crows, remember he not in the Football dept area he is putting in the hours in the Adelaide Sport and Entertainment side of the club a separate body to the Football dept. So I guess we judge Smart on how that works,
ie Legacy, Bite and their media productions.

Burton different story, hearing all sort of mixed messages, not many good ones.
I leaning to one story that only one of either Burton or Hass will be around next year. maybe both disappearing. Some are even saying he hanging Hass out to dry. Rumors only not facts or proof.
Burton body langue from the press conference was not good, He looked like a boy sent to the lions and acted like one.

I can only hope that Slippery Pete was on to something when he said Fagan is trying to show him up for the bumbling fool that he is. Surely if he wanted to break contract and can him, all he'd have to do is play a recording of that press conference to the board.

If this was Fages' strategy, he should hand in his notice now.

Publicly throwing Burton under the bus by making him front a presser that he clearly does not have the skill or experience to manage - which in the process only exacerbates the issue - just to justify a future termination, would be a horrible strategy.

Priority one right now is to stop the metaphoric bleeding caused by this car crash of a season. Bring in some professional outside PR help, and keep Burton as far away from any of our stakeholders as possible, until they work out what to do with him.

I had a look the other day and Adelaide’s PR role was filled by Jill Moss? who was listed as on maternity leave. The staff page has been updated to show PR Consultant Natasha Wade now

Edit: Mathew Clark now listed as AFLW coach

So Andrew McKay has left Carlton as football manager. His statement is "I need to experience other environments to enable me to develop further. I am really open-minded to new professional challenges out there within the industry and more broadly in time to come,..."

Sounds to me like he has another job offer? Does this mean........

James Sutherland is free next year. Might even buy the Strikers

.....Sutherland? Another who was asleep at the wheel while CA's brand was trashed by all and sundry. Looks as though he's comatose most of the time. Hardly inspiring. Sport al all levels has a very long history of appointing dud administrators. ' Sir Lunchalot's' , one and all. Just like that twit at Essendon who fell on his sword then moved to Melbourne Victory and now at Rowing Australia.

If he was coming from a top tier club then yes definitely but he's coming from a club with a losing culture who have lost more players than us and ask for more handouts than port.
Vozzo is who I'd want

Would love him to replace Burton. Seems professional and experienced.
Then again maybe I’m simply hoping for anyone other than Burton right now.

I would take anybody over Burton right now. Apparently we cant get anyone better than Campo and Clarke because Adelaide is so shit. McKay is a South Australian. I was hoping we would get back Nick Poulos, but not sure if he is suited to the head of football role specifically. Maybe he might come back and take over Haas's role if he knew he didn't have an incompetent person above him.

I agree with all of that

The guys getting paid 100k+, he should be able to handle himself in front of the media.

I don't mind them giving a guy a crack on potential, but you need an experienced footy related guy above him to guide him. Fagan isn't that guy. This isn't a middle management role, this is head of footy ops and we've seen what sort of a cluster**** has ensued.

Simply dumb decision making by the AFC which happens to frequently to be a coincidence or redeemable.

There was a fair bit of tongue in cheek in my comment.

Can we split the role or is John Reid free?

Thats been raised before and its possible. But why not say that? ' Unfortunately due to contractual agreements some of the activities cant be confirmed or denied'
But doesn't that basically admit guilt of what has happened? Surely what they've said is more palatable for the "lay" supporter. A week is a long time in football, deny deny deny and the media will move onto the next thing. Granted it doesn't resolve the issue but neither does talking publicly about it. At least the method they went with gives the club a chance to deal with it internally without players being hounded by media.

Long term it really doesn't matter what they say externally, it's all about what they do internally.
