People go on about Hazlewood being the next McGrath - i reckon it's Cummins
So consistent on a length on or about off stump.
No longer swings or jags it massively - just does enough to kiss the edge.
He may not get as many glory balls (such as a starc inswinger) - but he's damn effective.

Hazlewood is superficially the most similar to McGrath, but he lacks McGrath's bag of tricks. Hence why he doesn't average below 25 like I would have hoped after his debut 5-fer.
Closer to Reiffel than McGrath IMO (though still better).
As for Cummins - yes, this is the thread that keeps on giving. I guess we all do and say things that turn out to be unwise with hindsight...

Me and a mate had a similar discussion yesterday - he’s got the accuracy and bounce of McGrath; with another 10-15km of Pace.

Ooh ah was pretty quick in the 90s - certainly into the low 140s
He never got to the 150 mark that Cummins has hit.
But i don't reckon the gap is near 15kmh at the same age.
McGrath massively slowed down once he hit 30

It's been so good to watch Cummins realise his potential in the last 2 years. Especially happy I got to see him in the flesh take 5 at the MCG recently. Those spells he bowled that day eclipsed Rabada at Hobart as the best bowling I've ever seen live.
Can't help but feel he has gone to another level since the Ashes. Even though he hasn't necessarily torn lineups apart this summer, it now seems like he is in complete control whereas last summer he was still learning how to fully harness his talent and ability. Also helping I think is his status as our best bowler, rather than the bang-it-in brutaliser role he was assigned earlier.
The one thing now that I'm hoping to see from him is an innings where he single-handedly decimates a line-up and picks up 7 or 8 wickets. McGrath had that 8 for at Lords in 1997 which really announced him as a master quick. To a lesser extent Johnson's 8 in Perth in 2008 was a signal that he'd become what Lillee predicted (and what a shame he couldn't consistently hit that level bar 13/14). Will be tougher for Cummins with the attack he is sharing wickets with, and also that Australian wickets seldom allow for that kind of scything bowling performance these days.

Somebody even did a new lyon thread a few weeks ago, he does a great job for us but it still doesn't take long for the knives to come out.

Nope.
The point I was making (admittedly with a pretty clickbaity title) was that, at the time the thread was made, Cummins was receiving fairly disproportionate praise and comparatively little criticism compared to bowlers who were regularly turning in far superior performances - Starc in particular. It is a common problem on this forum, where Test bowlers get way too much credit for economy and not nearly enough for strike rate.
As I noted in the OP you quoted, I still rated Cummins and I am glad that he has gone on to fulfil his potential.
