Like Mercury, they flew too high too quick but will be stronger for the experience in Div 3.

do you mean Icarus?

anyway... this weekend sees the full cycle. Everyone will have played everyone, and it's an interesting fixture:

Yarra Valley, relegated twice in the last 2 years, play Kew - the opponent the day the Bushrangers won their first (E-grade) premiership in 1997.

LaTrobe v Ivanhoe is, at least colour-wise, an 'Anzac day' blockbuster

West Brunswick v UHS is the Royal Park Derby

Hawthorn V Elsternwick is the Bombers V Hawks, line in the sand, grudge match

Powerhouse V Albert Park is the Lakeside Derby

St Johns V St Francis is a religious schism of 11th century proportions. No doubt apostates and heretics will exchange strong words across the fence.

deliberate scheduling? accident? coincidence? Red Gum has too much time on his hands?

Er,well, Yes. Icarus it was.

All maches this week are critical, even the biblical one!

The Hoes v Brewers will be interesting.Have injuries or exams hit the 'trobers? The Hoes can inflict swift scoreboard damage. Will the big ground test their fitness?
Have the Westies found a vein of success? Or at least plugged a leak or two in their boat?
Will Dame Fortune smile on the injured Vultures?
The House need a win like a fish needs water.
However, the birds of prey need to deny the Piranahs that resource to remain aloft.
Cross town cousins, Hawks, will want a decisive win to maintain altitude.
The 'wicks need to ground them quickly.
The Joccas will win and not sustain any injuries more importantly..

Does anyone really know the sides that are at the top of the ladder, anyone with some info please let me know. just interested in your thoughts.

after this weekend will be a good idea of where teams will finish, given we'll have all played each other... Its still very open at this stage I'd say.

Can't wait for the Hoes to take on top spot Latrobe.
We're getting better at Hoe land. When we play well we kick goals quickly. Its just a pity the same applies in reverse... we play bad and we conceed quick goals.

look for a more mobile ruck performance from big Ryan tomorow with his flash new hair cut.

Expect the big man Angelo to kick a bag too... there will be more creative and exquisite ball delivery to him tomorow having seen the Hoes team sheet, the half forward line in particular.

lets just hope it ain't too cold and some of the dodgy hammys can hold on for 4 qtrs this week..

LOL... Very amusing Mitch.
Although the half forward line may change if it gets too cold and some hammies don't make it out on the park tomorrow. :D

Agreed Mitch_fc, He is also looking to draw some inspriation from tonights Daryl Braithwaite concert I hear.

I just hope one of the young fellas are there to carry his bags in from his car when he gets to the ground.

You did not hear the latest Lions Den ......Buddy has a young kid driving him to the ground in return for a singed photo of the great 'budster- love', so the young fella can hang on the wall at home.

Great bloke the buster...just loves getting the young blokes in the club involved.

BIG game tomo for the Hoes - think the trobers would start pretty warm favs...home ground and wet.

Hopefully I am wrong again.

Chump.

Yes a big round of matches that can easily shape a teams season heading into the finals run-up:
Yarra Valley vs Kew. Can't see the winemakers falling to the cementry minders.
La Trobe University vs Ivanhoe. A northern suburbs stoush with the students to get back on track.
West Brunswick vs UHS-VU. A tough one, but the nod goes to the students.
Hawthorn vs Elsternwick. An eight point game that should go the home teams way.
Power House vs Albert Park. Playing for the Parks Victoria Cup and it should stand at Park's home after tomorrow - naturally.
St Johns vs St Francis Xavier. Top vs bottom and it's a Tommy (No)Brainer.

The Hoes v Brewers will be interesting.Have injuries or exams hit the 'trobers? The Hoes can inflict swift scoreboard damage. Will the big ground test their fitness? Well,no. The Brewers inflicted some serious pain on their southern neighbours. A bit embarrasing really.
Have the Westies found a vein of success? Or at least plugged a leak or two in their boat?
Will Dame Fortune smile on the injured Vultures?Somehow the student fraternity have cobbled together a competitive side. Enough to dispense with their cross-park counterparts.
The House need a win like a fish needs water.
However, the birds of prey need to deny the Piranahs that resource to remain aloft. Deny them they could not. The Housers, backs to the wall, made it their day yesterday. A very tough side. Lots of experience there.
Cross town cousins, Hawks, will want a decisive win to maintain altitude.
The 'wicks need to ground them quickly. It took one and a half quarters, but ground the hungry hoard they did. The moral of this story is......you cannot argue with umpires. Simple as that. Nasty melee in the second qtr. (Serious discipline issues over in hawkland) From there on the 'wicks held sway.Including a long range "bomb" from coach Smith to top off a good day. Then they drank the bar completely dry!!!! Not a bad concession for the Hawks.
The Joccas will win and not sustain any injuries more importantly.. Win they did. It's going to be a long season for the happless Saints. Bring on 2011.
Apologies to Yarra Valley and Kew. Probably a result the Bears would rather commit to distant memory. No club likes those days. Now, the bushrangers are under achieving at this stage. They should be staging a real tilt at top two or three ladder spots but they are not! What the?
The season is well and truely on for all. Positions 4 to 8 all contesting for finals action.

I see that The leading Goal kicker from Powerhouse (Edwards) did not play last week - can anyone tell me why? trouble for the house finding a replacement goal kicker?

Lucky Phil, shouldn't worry too much about Eddo, It is nice and warm in FNQ at the moment. The House have a rich vein of goalkickers and a wealth of footy nous. Let's see, they are just about out of contention for finals action. Correct. If they did make finals, they would probably just be fodder for the top two. Correct.
There are 7 rounds to go before finals and if the House are to make it their fate depends on (1) winning. (2) other results going their way. Correct. This scenario applies to several teams in Division 3 right now. Correct?
Ok, welcome to the most boring section in all of amateurland.
This week sees a plethora of 8 point games.
West Brunswick host St Johns. Unless half the Jokkas have a wedding to attend Saturday, I believe the visitors will win.
St Francis Xavier host Ivanhoe. The black and whites will want to put this road trip under their belt comfortably and have minimal injuries to boot. That said, upsets are a possibility this time of the season.(Is that an each way bet?)
UHS VU play host to Kew. Can I inject some intrigue into this forum? The Bears have been pretty stiff of late and there is some real talent running around in their jumper. Ok, I'm tipping an unlikely upset. Kew, just.
Power House v LaTrobe Uni. Just toohard to go past the brewers right now. Depends on the weather I suppose. I'm tipping a real arm wrestle and a low scoring game. The "breeze" from the lake might be enough to blow the top off the University mascot's frothy.
Across the lake Albert Park have Hawthorn to contend with. Plenty to play for in this match. If the Hawks swoop fast and early, as is their way, the Falcons might be chasing crumbs all day. Not that they are not fit and fast enough to finish well. I'm tipping the visitors, more disciplined, will score the "kill" and leave the leave the hosts to pick up scraps.
Elsternwick have been in the competition quite a long time and have good memories. They would have not forgotten their previous encounter earlier this season. They will be the hunters in this match. So watch out. Home ground advantage will be a telling factor, coupled with their past players calling from outside the boundary

Are you calling the Hawks more disciplined?!?!?!? You have got to be joking mate. They would easily be the most undisciplined side in the comp! Whinged and complained to the umps all day when they played us, and as a result had numerous 25m penalties against them.
A huge danger game for the Hoes tomorrow out woop woop at St Francis Xavier..... A win for them is just around the corner. Very rarely do sides go through a whole season winless. Have a look at Richmond. Even that rabble have had a few wins.

Have to disagree that this is the most boring division, especially having some seven teams still jockeying for the last couple of finals spots. But do agree that again this week there are a couple of eight-point pearlers !

UHS-VU vs Kew. Can't see the uni boys dropping this one.
Elsternwick vs Yarra Valley. A true eight-pointer and a big day for the Wicks. Expect them to get across the line.
West Brunswick vs St Johns. The sainters just too big and experienced for the locals.
Albert Park vs Hawthorn. Another eight-pointer and expect ND's boys to bounce back with a solid win.
Power House vs La Trobe University. A vital one for the House but expect the students to pul the plug on the Powers.
St Francis Xavier vs Ivanhoe. The Hoes were embarrassed last week and expect tem to gain some lost percentage in this one.

Big upset at McAlister oval today with the west brunny boys standing tall in a thriller for the skip Johnny hayesy's 100th.

Suddenly, Division 3 is interesting. lol
Not in their wildest dreams would SFX think they would kick the same total as Latrobe on Saturday, but they did! Unfortunatly, not in the same game. Close now,the egg must surely soon be broken for the beaky boys.
I tipped a low scoring match at Ross Gregory, but not the result.
West Brunny would have savoured their success well into the night.
The Falcons got the chocolates just as the Hawks were closing in for the kill. Too late!
Vultures too strong for the Bears. Tommy Godsell proved a godsend. 7 sausages!!
The Bushrangers got bushwacked by the Wickers in full cry, just! 2 minutes to go and 3 points up, "lightning" Bedingfield struck. A six pointer to seal the win for the assembled fans and past players.Tension!

What's going on at the House? I thought they would be genuine flag contenders this year with Pikey at the helm- good list and good coach, should be leading the way.

PS Pikey looked good last night in the all-star game!

write up for the Wickers in the Age

Taking on opponent No.142, the Wickers show they have tickers

PAUL DAFFEY

July 7, 2010

ELSTERNWICK Amateur Football Club was not long formed when it joined the Metropolitan Amateur Football Association, which became the Victorian Amateur Football Association in 1914.
The ''Wickers'' played in A-section for the next 25 years, winning premierships in 1920 and '25, but since 1939 they have experienced the entire gamut of VAFA footy. Elsternwick played in every grade from A-Section to G-Section, which is now known as Division 4. The Wickers' most recent flag was in Division 4 in 2005.
By playing in every section in Australia's biggest footy competition, the Wickers have pitted themselves against more clubs than any other. Its rival in its Division 3 game on Saturday, Yarra Valley Old Boys, was the 142nd club it has played in senior competition.

The only VAFA clubs Elsternwick is yet to play are Mazenod, Point Cook, Mt Lilydale and South Mornington. The last three are recent additions to the competition.
The Wickers play in Essendon jumpers. Of the 70 senior VAFA clubs, the Wickers' red and black clashes only with La Trobe University and Old Xaverians. If they play La Trobe, one club wears a set of white jumpers from VAFA headquarters.
In 1951, they played Old Xavs. Elsternwick's historian Col Page said both clubs just wore their regular strips in that game. "There was no such thing as jumper clashes in those days," he said.
Page's father George coached the 1951 team to the D-section premiership. The captain and vice-captain from that team, Bill Elliott and Russell Nash, were at the Elsternwick past players' lunch on Saturday.
Elliott, 88, and Nash, 83, shared roving duties in 1951. The star in their team was 16-year-old centre half-back Don Williams, later a Melbourne premiership star. Elliott and Nash said the Wickers' biggest rival in that era was Parkdale.
In the grand final against Parkdale, Elliott, Nash and centreman Ron Neville rotated through the rover, centre and forward pocket. "We confused them," Elliott said. "They didn't know where we were!"
Elsternwick's strongest rival in recent years has been Albert Park, which in 1991 was still known as ANZ Bank. In that year, the ''Bankers'' were so heavily favoured to win the F-section grand final that they hired marquees. The Wickers rolled them.
On Saturday, Elsternwick president Antony Blackshaw illustrated the club's plight by pointing to a house near the club's ground, the No. 2 oval at Elsternwick Park. The house was for sale and was expected to fetch $2.2 million. "Not many 25-year-olds can buy in Elwood or Elsternwick," he said.
The Wickers have no juniors. Their players tend to be sons of former players or blow-ins who live in nearby flats. But the club has spirit.
On Saturday, as the past players gathered on the top wing in honour of recently deceased stalwart Graham Holmes, the Wickers fought off a challenge from Yarra Valley to win by nine points. Another foe vanquished.

ROUND 13. (Unlucky for some.)6 rounds to go, for some clubs the footy trip is just one week closer. For others the season is well and truely ON!

Kew host Hawthorn and whilst hope springs eternal, this week the Bears will greet a wounded Hawk determined to mitigate the slide.

LaTrobe Uni v SFX. Long trip for the Franciscans!

UHS VU v Yarra Valley. 8 point game. I expect the bushrangers will get this one.
Albert Park v West Brunswick. If it's muddy, make it Magpies. If it's dry, Falcons fly. (sic)
Ivanhoe v Elsternwick. Last time these teams met the Hoers destroyed the contest before half time. They face a different Wick side now. Visitors to shake Eagle feathers.

St Johns v Power House. Looking at last weeks results, the Joccas might have to be warey of a club living up to it's name and reputation. The Doveton free running game might be compromised but not enough. StJOC to win.

Good luck to all this week.

p.s. A special mention to the bushrangers who, although they had their major club function last week, stayed back for a few drinks.Good sports.

And for this week I am of the opinion that:

UHS-VU vs Yarra Valley
Ivanhoe vs Elsternwick
La Trobe University vs St Francis Xavier
Albert Park vs West Brunswick
St Johns vs Power House
Kew vs Hawthorn

A bit dangereous tipping all the home sides, but .....
