Hey Sidey,

Offer up some juicy goss yourself and maybe someone will give you something back.

Well Eltham started training last monday, we have had reasonable numbers, most blokes turned up in ok condition considering the break!!

Anyone else started or going to start ??

Will be interested to see how UHS-VU go after being the easy-beats in 2006, dropping down to win a flag, then straight back up. Likewise Eltham who have been amongst the best in D4 for a number of years now without ever being able to make it to the big one.

Out of interest, when was the last time Eltham progressed through the levels? Don't remember them being out of D4 for a little while now.

Also interesting will be the fortunes of St Johns and Williamstown, both of whom won a number of matches in D2 in 2007 and were, perhaps, unlucky to be relegated. Similar, I guess, to Bentleigh a couple of years ago.

Other favourites? Surely Hawthorn would want to build on a 2007 season that saw them exceed all external expectations, despite choking in the finals.

Elsternwick clearly the strongest side outside of the final 4, with a scary finish to the year that would have had those above them relieved that they didn't make it. Always seem to have injury problems, but if they sort those out then they must be an early front-runner.

Latrobe would also fancy themselves at this stage, looking very good at various stages in 2007, whilst Swinburne, Powerhouse, Gryphons are probably just making up the numbers once again.

From what i know Eltham have never been out of D4 since its been in structured that way....

Also wouldn't say we have been amongst the best for several years, we only played senior finals in 2006 and 2007, before that we were getting flogged for sometime!!!

Here are my thoughts:

Eltham won't know what to do with themselves in D3 - will go alright but won't trouble the front runners.

Uni High are in the same boat, but from all reports won't trouble the top half of D3 with their current list. If they recruit as well as they did in 06/07 off season they could find themselves a bit higher up the ladder...

St John's and Willy both have formidable home ground advantages due to strange geometry, "oval" is a loosely used term when talking about their grounds. St John's also have the intimidation factor of calling Doveton home. I doubt a dove has graced the skies down that way for a long time, if ever. They'll both feature in September unless the wheels have fallen off big time.

Hawthorn will do ok, but their success hinges on what the 'new leadership' can do for the off-field stuff... Radical changes may be required to get them to the GF, considering their fairly good list in 07 wasn't enough.

Who knows what you'll get with La Trobe - probably didn't do enough in 07 to lure some of the uni lads currently heading back home to the country to play footy, but if they can convince a few of them they could get a decent side.

Elsternwick could be anywhere - couple of big names must be drawing close to retirement, and with talk of their ground being turned into a wetlands to add ambience to VAFA HQ they might have a new (larger) home ground that may turf their game plan out the window!

Agree with the fate of Swinburne, Powerhouse, Gryphons - not going anywhere in a hurry. Unless it's D4 in 09.

Williamstown have a great advantage at their ground and to boot are a good team, St.Johns not so much in spite of the fact it can be intimidating to go down to Doveton it's not that long a trip and the ground doesn't provide a huge advantage.

It's a long enough trip for Williamstown and isn't exactly walking distance from Eltham or LaTrobe either.

Word on the street is that Tony Boyce is pulling on the white boots and whistle again for UH-VUS - can anyone confirm?

So who's the pre-season favourite to take out the goal-kicking title this season with big Angelo Pace moving up to D2?

Eddo, Higgo, or perhaps Coach Hollywood to bring his goal-kicking form up from D4? Do St.Johns or Willy have a contender?

He umpired in D4 last season so why not?

Was Boycey the bloke involved in that 'incident' with Lee Murphy a few years back ?

Boycey has been 'involved' in many 'incidents' over the years... and yes, 'one' of them involved Lee Murphy.

La Trobe rumoured to have a couple of big names from Shepparton and surrounds as likely starters... can you confirm, Big Rig?

y would u say uhs vu 2nd last and the college 2nd when uhs convincly beat that mob from eltham 3 times last yr?

down at monash, just completed the 5th training session and last for the year.
great numbers (20-25 on avge) each night with a lot of new blood, lot of young guys. still lacking the couple of big mature players, but should be more competitive than last year where there was no training before xmas and afterwards 5-10 guys doing pre-season. looking much better this year.

I've heard a 'bigger' than ever Flowerday is making a comeback for Monash. Can anyone confirm this. He is good enough to get them into the 4, even if he is as unfit as the last time he played.

I have absolutely nothing to base this on but i'll have a stab at the ladder...

Elsternwick
St Johns
La Trobe
Powerhouse
Willy
Hawthorn
Swinburne
Monash
UHS
Eltham

I'll have to disagree with that.

From seeing both Uni and ELtham first hand this year im certain both if not definately one will play finals.

However have heard couple of big names from turtle land maybe headed to Trinity?? any truth there port man?
