Daisy Thomas 'Superstars' poster?

Did you even read the thread? Time and time we state we don't think he's in our top 10. I don't think he's in our top 15 to be honest.

We get excited about our young prospects but look at your club. Dustin Martin is already a savior and his first game isn't until tomorrow night. But that's fine. Clubs needs to be excited about their new talent otherwise what's the point?!

This is true, but the exposure Thomas has achieved in his career is borderline ridiculous. To me it's like the media are so sure that he 'will' someday be a star of the game, they keep blowing his tyres up... and of course the gullible Gen Y gobble it up with a spoon.

Thomas needs to be amongst the top 10 in the LEAGUE in 2010 to start justifying his exposure. We all know this will never happen so I'm hoping to see less of his adolescent, homosexual looking image everywhere in the future.

I feel for Pendlebury and Swan. Genuine good players who get no exposure because of this little brat. Like others have said, just because something is marketed well, doesn't mean it's a good thing. Thomas as accomplished nothing to suggest he's anything but a sub-standard AFL player as yet.

Most people hate players with x-factor. They can turn games in a matter of 5 - 10 minutes and Thomas is certainly one of the players at the Pies with the most x-factor. Though, there are the odd x-factor players that people do like, but it's all up to the discretion of the person giving the opinion. Mostly though, we hear from those who are critical of the player whether it be on BF, other internet forums, in conversation and obviously at the games themselves.

As other posters have pointed out he is labelled a superstar because of his marketability and the promotion by the HUN is the AFL "Superstar" series they're not going to call it anything else. They have included Dale Thomas to sell papers, because a poster of Pendles, Didak, Cloke, Jolly etc would sell nowhere near as many copies.

Having said that, Thomas isn't in my top 10 favourite players at Collingwood, but I respect the way he plays his footy. He is hard at it, never shying away from a contest, runs hard, is extremely creative and we are a better team when he is playing.

Now to further illustrate my point...here is a list of players with x-factor from each team and I think you'll find most people are critical of them. Tell me if I've missed some.

Adelaide: McLeod (superstar player but I still can't stand him)

Brisbane: possibly Justin Sherman

Carlton: Eddie Betts, Chris Yarran

Collingwood: Dale Thomas, Alan Didak, Leon Davis

Essendon: Kyle Reimers, Alwyn Davey

Fremantle: perhaps Hayden Ballantyne? (as an oldie...Jeff Farmer)

Geelong: Steve Johnson, Matthew Stokes

Hawthorn: Cyril Rioli, (until last year Stuart Dew)

Fremantle: possibly Hayden Ballantyne

Melbourne: Austin Woneamirri, Liam Jurrah, Aaron Davey

North: Daniel Wells

Port Adelaide: Daniel Motlop, Danyle Pearce

Richmond: can't think of anyone at the moment

St. Kilda: Stephen Milne

Sydney: not really anyone until Lewis Jetta

West Coast: Nic Nat

Bulldogs: Josh Hill

I'm sorry to hark back to, like, 4 pages ago...but this has to be said.

Everyone!!...EVERYONE loves Cyril Rioli.

He truly is delicious.

Carry on.

I did read the thread. But 3 or 4 BF posters is hardly a cross section of the Pies supporter base. In my experience Thomas is still highly regarded by the rank and file. And even higher by management it appears. Eddie for example, thinks he is a champ.

Long may it continue.

I think it's what you call being a "supporter"

on another forum dedicated to the Pies, when discussing our important players and top 10's etc, Thomas RARELY features. If anything, there's more threads on why the hell is isn't carving it up!

I'll suggest that your experience, as you put it, is very, very thin....can you point us to the quote where Eddie mentions he is a champ? for example?

Marketable, for sure.

Superstar of the game ? far from it, who cares though . Its not like Thomas has put that label on himself. He seems like a pretty down to earth guy.

If people wanna whinge over his media representation then they are truely petty, still puts in on the track as much as anyone, runs himself into the ground and despite what people say in terms of him being a soft show pony, ive never seen him once back out of a contest, for his size he probably puts himself in situations he shouldnt, always goes in hard though.

But hey lets not ruin a good bitch session and continue with the soft long haired overhyped girl thing, what else would people have to whinge about then ?

My only gripe with him is his consistency , which i think will come with a bit more experience , he has notched up 70 odd games or so with a smallish frame so hes lucky to even played that many. So a bit more time and i think the consistency will come. Draft number is irrelevant, we got Jack,Pendles and Thomas out of that draft , have to say im pretty satisfied.

In todays Herald Sun....

Surely he'd be about the 12th ranked player at Collingwood...at absolute best.

When will the media realise this bloke is the most comical "superstar" of all time? Also Thomas and his management need to have a look at themselves for allowing this to go ahead, surely they must be embarrassed?

OK I'll bite, what's he done that's comical?

Geez, we're all pretty cynical in here. He's hugely popular with the kids, and kids are the ones who put these posters up on their walls (unless there are some older people on these boards who want to 'fess up to doing the same). On Anzac Day a couple of years ago there was a Collingwood-supporting family from north Queensland sitting in front of me who had travelled all the way down to Melbourne to watch the game, and the mother jokingly told me not to bag Dale Thomas during the game because her kids were huge fans of Daisy and very excited to see him.

I assumed the OP was talking about his footy prowess. What's his off-field activities got to do with anything?

Well, as you know, most non Collingwood supporters, need to find some figure at the club to hate, so they find fault with everything he does, because in some ways he is one of the public faces at the club.

As far as I am concerned, he is a model citizen as a footballer. He doesn't bignote himself at all, he doesnt get into trouble off the field, he is not exactly demonstrative on the field in a way like a Milne is. So other than the fact that he plays for Collingwood, has shown some X factor flair in the past and the club uses his image, I dont see what the problem is with the bloke. I have met him a few times, he is not a big head in any regard, just a good Gippsland lad, with his head screwed on.

But lets not let some morons misconceptions spoil their public lynching, what else would they do with their pitchforks and lamps?

I can't recall one Collingwood supporter in this thread labelling Thomas in our top 10 players, let alone a superstar. If the sun rates him a superstar good for them.
But he IS a superstar. I wish he played better football more often but that's another matter....

As for some of the crap I read about him on, all I can say is the detractors are MUCH further from the mark than the cheerleaders but at least the latter have valid motivation for their views.

Thomas is a handy footballer. He is not a gun player at this point and may never be - he is running low on time to get there. Nevertheless anyone who thinks he lacks courage or effort either doesn't watch or knows very little about the game.

Unless they morons actually cared to look at all the work he does off the ball, they wouldnt have a clue as to the amount of team orientated stuff he does.

I dont know if it's just me but I reckon he has a very punchable head.

I dont think he's a bad footballer though, he's better than your average player.

Well there are a few heads at Carlton, and one most notably that just left, that have punchable heads. is it a visual thing or a behavioural thing, because Thomas does very little off the field to warrant anyone's attention and on the field. And if they cite a high media profile, then I guess every club has players that need punching in the head.

If anyone can cite an example where Thomas has done something that warrants undue criticism other than that shocking ad last year, I'd like to know what it is. And whilst constructing your list of hate crimes, ask yourself if anyone at your own club has done similarly and should warrant the same negativity.

Just look at Chris Judd..... and he's won a brownlow.

It's very simple. There isn't a player in this league who's media profile is so far in front of his playing achievements. Not one.

He's a reasonable player. A Superstar? Um, no.

Is this the poster you speak of ?
