Damian Barrett: Clubs will refuse to trade with Hawthorn because of aggressivness and arrogance ....

Re: Damian Barrett f#$@wit extraordinaire

the message from barrett was more than about trades, but rather that the hawks seem to be out offering uncontracted players large sums of money to come to the hawks prior to trade week and no agreement between the clubs concerned about the trade. building unrealistic expectations into a player.

eddie brushed him off and said it was all part of trade talk.

Re: Damian Barrett f#$@wit extraordinaire

I dont know why people say were are unreasonable when trading.

We didnt give pick 6 for Thornton- right move despite Thorp struggling so far Thornton was never worth that.

We didnt give pick 16 for ROK - again right move we got Shoey who looks the goods and could be a long term answer an CHB.

We held out til the last minute with spider - again we were always gonna take a second round pick but why not hold out in case the other team cracks.

Trading is about value not how many players you get to the club. We could get any player we want the club if we trade roughy, cyril and buddy for them but that doesn't mean your a good trader, it means your an idiot.

How about the other ones like when Dogs were looking at Boyle and Pelchem asked for Higgins in return.......it is that type of shit that has got him the reputation he has. Unrealistic view on Hawks players so that they can't be traded like Boyle and now he is on scrap heap.

Re: Damian Barrett f#$@wit extraordinaire

I don't really care what other sides think of us a trading partners. We try and get the best we can for as cheap as we can. I don't think it has hurt us yet. Yes we could have had O'keefe or Thornton, but we won a flag without either of them and have a strong enough list to push on to better things next year. Gibson would be great, but isn't worth a first round pick and if we don't get him then so be it. We simply put more work into Lisle and Shoey in case Croady doesn't make it back.

Gibson has indicated he wants to leave North Melbourne and come to us, would other clubs in the pre-season draft select him on the price he wants if they honestly think he doesn't want to be there??

Let the f#$kwits sook, we'll just go about our business. I notice Carlton haven't been caned for their aggressive recruitment drives for Judd and Warnock over the past few years.

Ever hear the phrase "wouldn't hurt to ask"? Of course he's going to try and get the most he can out of a deal? When you buy a car do you just pay whatever price is listed without haggling? If so, want to buy a car?

Because they got their men. We haven't been able to land a player, so the perception is that we are unreasonable and unworkable.

I prefer not to talk about the chok...er...the tankers.

Re: Damian Barrett f#$@wit extraordinaire

I find all the grandstanding very amusing to watch, "If they don't give us Pick 9, let's put him in the PSD"!

Firstly, can't he just nominate for the national draft? That way, we can just pick him up with Pick 25 (unless North 'beat' us to it with Pick 21 ).

Take note of all the posts saying how North wont be 'screwed over' and that there's no chance of him leaving for Pick 25.

It'll be Pick 25 - we might throw in a late pick to get it done, but North fans are dreaming if they think they'll get any more than that.

Re: Damian Barrett f#$@wit extraordinaire

I don't mind Barrett actually, generally very astute - but then again, everyone else is lining up to give us a kicking so why should he miss out?

I think once he's had a chance to think about it he will be pretty disappointed with himself for letting his bias drive his agenda.

Re: Damian Barrett f#$@wit extraordinaire

Don't know what he was thinking there. The only thing that would stop us would be salary cap problems.
We have enough Room in our salary Cap to get Gibson & Lake so we will definably be a big player come Trade week!

As for Barrett don't give a rats arse what he says just another stupid opinion!

Re: Damian Barrett f#$@wit extraordinaire

Barrett is usually OK but he has seriously got it in for us at the moment. Did you see him on Before the Bounce on Fox last week? Had a serious go at the Chief about Clarkson, listing every tiny (and not so tiny) indiscretion and getting quite heated about it while he was at it.

Follows up with this less than a week later...strange.

Re: Damian Barrett f#$@wit extraordinaire

How does that even come up on a footy show? Oh right, Caro and Hutchison are involved.

It was one of those sessions between the coaches and the reporters, and there was talk of players and drug use etc.

Chocco went all aggressive on barrett and said "have you ever smoked pot! Ever? Have you damien?"

He said, "well... yeah once"

Caro and Hutchy denied, from memory.

Re: Damian Barrett f#$@wit extraordinaire

Unfortunately, I think he may have a point.

We have not been successful in landing a big trade during Pelchin's tenure. What disappoints me has been the fact that there have been leaks linking us to trades in previous years which failed to get off the ground - eg O'Keefe & Thornton. We are getting a reputation similar to Collingwood several years ago failing to seal a trade deal in which we land a big name player.

Because of the healthy state of our list, our draft picks and our aggressive approach - the other clubs are less likely to trade with us unless they see a real benefit in committing to the trade. In this draft, I expect that other clubs will have have a preference to deal with Port rather than us, although we have similar picks!

Over time we have gotten offside with a number of clubs with regards to trades including the Kangaroos (hay), Carlton (thornton) and Sydney (ROK) and they have long memories.

For those reasons I expect that there is no likelhood of getting Lake and very little prospect of getting Gibson. The deal for Gibson won't work unless it provides value to the Kangaroos.

As an aside to get the deal accross the line would you consider trading picks 9, 41 and a player (say Morton or Thorp calibre) for Gibson & Goldstein

Triple M this morning:

Barrett made a blanket statement: Clubs will refuse to trade with Hawthorn because of their aggressive and arrogant trading policy.

WTF?

Newsflash Damian! Clubs will always trade in their OWN interest Barrett

I would much rather this that the pushovers we used to be in trade week...Just think of all the spuds we always ended up with..and we always lost players Ben Allan, Darren Jarman..Daniel Chick... until the Jade Rawlings deal where we finally turned things around & made a statement :thumbsu:

Thats the same as saying we cant be f#Ck'ed with ... sounds good to me.
I'm happy to see other clubs squeal like pigs Deliverance style at the Hawks trading history. Even better still when we can see it get under the skin of prominent opposition supporters....squeal Damo...squeal :D

Spot on GS. People often forget how we struggled through the 90s and early 2000s because we kept getting hosed in trades, or just missing out entirely. I can't recall the media feeling sorry for us then, but they love sinking the boots in the moment we get a break.

Re: Damian Barrett f#$@wit extraordinaire

Exactly Gene and Adelaide, it all comes down to a matter of who would you rather be the pushover or the pusher.

What we have to remember is that a trade requires the agreement of the other party.

Therefore, you need to give something of value.

Its pointless going after Lake, Gibson, Tarrant etc if we aren't going to put up something reasonable in return.

Hence I would give pick 9 for Gibson.

I would personally like to see a competitive Hawthorn back line next year and in 2010. Pick 9 wont give us that.

The aim should be to get the list we need - not to "win" the trade battle.

Everyone has a PHD in hindsight. A bit of luck bad or otherwise and it could be Higgins career that is over. At that time Higgins hadn't had his break out year this year. Bulldogs were proven right on this occasion, although you guys still need a tall forward.

If Boyle was traded would he have done his knee in a Box Hill game? Who knows?

Re: Damian Barrett f#$@wit extraordinaire

Dogs got pick 31 for Farren Ray and pick 48 last season, and they didn't want to trade the former No.4 draft pick.

I think 25 is well over the odds.

I would take Gibson over Ray any day.

What it comes down to is how much we want him.

My opinion is that the Hawks are wasting their time next year and in 2011 without a key back.

We'll probably make the 8 but forget about a serious challenge.

The last thing we need is another kid - we have just about the youngest list an AFL team can possibly have.

Pick 9 could be very valuable or it could not (e.g. Dowler, Thorp)
