Very much a cake and eat it too situation. He's not leaving for opportunity. It's "I want to live in the city of Melbourne because reasons, oh and if you do let me go I only want to play for a half decent team in front of big crowds and finals". Should go to the highest bidder if moving home is the prime motivation. **** I sound like a crow fan lol.

funny, did you say the same when JHF wanted to go home?
North were happy to accept the offer for JHF, otherwise they would have kept him.

Houston isn't desperate to move, he's already said he is happy to stay if a deal can't be done.

Personally if North offer a 1st rounder (this or next year, doesn't matter), I'd take it over whatever Carlton probs offer.

If it's true Richmond are wanting pick 9 and 10 for Bolton and 6 + extra for Rioli, then we should be asking for 3 first rounders for Houston. Much better player than both of them!

Yeah there’s no way we should be taking less for Dan that Richmond get for Bolton.

If it’s norths future 1st I want another very good pick with it. That could easily be pick 8 next year, and for a player of dans quality to let him go for pick 8 in a years time and hoping that player doesn’t bust would be a risky move.

I’m not a trade negotiating expert and I know there’s games played and in reality player managers do a lot of the grunt work but I’m of a similar opinion.

If we could lock away soldo going out and luko in in the first half of trade week, I’d be telling Dans manager that we don’t care who it’s from but our compo needs to match the best of Bolton/Rioli or we aren’t considering it.

Whoops, will edit
Powell is an established midfielder who is boring and vanilla, doesn’t shift the needle towards winning a premiership. If he was going to play as a back pocket I may be interested. Just a Kane Cornes accumulator. I would rather one of the lads mentioned above who could develop and become a top 5 player in our squad. Powell ain’t ever going to be that, losing Houston I want the potential top 5 player, not a safe 15th picked bloke.

Powell is not vanilla. If he was an accumulator like you say he’d be a top 10 player in the comp. For whatever reason he finds it hard to get the footy every second week.

His running torp was one of many highlight kicks across the season. He signed a 2 year extension and doesn’t seem to have any desire to return home.

The one I’d look at as a tie breaker trade would be goad.

Powell is a “mid only” mid and does not fill a need. If we had a 2011 midfield, maybe. With our stacked midfield- no, find me a goal kicking pressure forward instead.
Sounds stupid to me but yes we need goal kicking forwards.
Unbelievable to think something as basic as that can be lost at a AFL club.
No wonder we keep coming up short.

Dan has certainly played his last game for the club, it’s now just about getting the optics right so that members & supporters don’t feel duped in what’s likely to be a less than favourable trade.

Why are you so sure, every year, literally every year there is 1 or multiple contracted players fail to get their desired club. If we don’t get a good deal he will literally stay. It’s not a wingard situation where the club clearly doesn’t really want him at the club anymore.

I get the impression in that circumstance Port would say it's up to Carlton to turn those 2 second round picks into a first round pick

Could be. On the other hand there's a couple of KPPs ranked 25-30 I'd be interested in. Noah Mraz for one. Something that gets us Dodson? Dodson will be 18-25?

Haven’t you heard? We exist to make the community proud. Why would our club take a hard position on Dan, when their track record suggests they can’t even make a fully justified tough call on their senior coach?

He’s gone, get use to it.

Look at the return you guys got for him though, even if not directly from us. Also bear in mind I don't think JHF went in with the position of "but I'll stay at North if a deal can't get done". The JHF trade from our side was partially done on speculation about where his career would trend, since he had only played one season. Dan Houston is a 100% known quantity and has made the last 2 AA teams. Two completely different scenarios.
The scenarios are exactly the same when you consider it's a player wants out and the club should do what's right by the player.

JHF was a 100% know quantity, everyone knew he would be a gun. Plus he has a 10-12 year career ahead of him as opposed to Houstons 4-5.
