Let's not forget that Farrell was out injured too. Having him back will solidify things. We also played pretty well against Freo and Hawthorn without Houston in the team so it's not like he's the be all and end all.

Obviously we're a worse team without him but half back flank is the easiest position on the ground to play. Just remember that we don't lose everything Houston gave us, we lose the difference between Houston and the next best player (that could be Sinn or Burton or whoever). It's a setback but the biggest problem with it by far is that we basically received nothing in return.

Half back is easiest position to get stats but it's not the easiest position to play.

There is no other player dare I say in the AFL that can read opposition structures and set up our attacks better than Houston.

Sydney and Geelong exposed us for this.

Boak and Gray at least do have multiple great finals games.

Rozee, Butters and JHF are literally sitting on zero good finals games. Zero! How there isn't a single one that they've played at an elite level is something.

No other club in the competition would give away a Top 3 player on their list for package that includes Lukosius, Rory Atkins, Joe RIchards, Pick 29, some late pick upgrades (the F1 and 13 cancel each other out).

It is absolutely mind boggingly insane.

Yep, this is coming.
That’s what 50 was for, to give back to the Swans as part of the deal.
13 / 50 for 20 / 23

Alternatively, we’ll combine 36 and 50 to get another pick between 20 and 30, with a fourth rounder coming back.

That way we only have to draft three players (all in top 30), and then use the fourth rounder to match for Barrett. We then have enough vacant list spots to rookie Burgoyne and maybe Montgomery.

Basically, Atkins then occupies the place on our list that pick 50 could have taken as our fourth draft pick before Benny Barrett.

What’s really damning about how weak we have been is that Richmond got the 23 (with 6) from GC for Rioli, leaving us the 29 (with 13 and Richards) for Houston.

Given we gave GC a F1R for Lukosius and took on Lukosius and Atkins’ salaries for no other real benefit except minor R2 and R3 upgrades, you’d think GC could have been decent enough to give us the 23 and tell Richmond to be happy enough with 29.

Combining 36 & 50 for a pick 20-30 is a good move. Your strategy has good logic.

Yeh that really irks me

Scully has been a big disappointment after watching his raw talent when he was first drafted. Our failure to improve him has been concerning.
Reckon he is improving. Playing tall forward, sometimes the only one, in that Magpies team would have been very difficult. He deserves another year on a 1y contract to see if he can get bigger, more aggressive, more dangerous and more consistent.

The difference is Richmond has a strategy and bargain hard for their players, aren't pushovers.
We on the other hand have Davies and Cripps.

I would go coaching first and then midfield problems second. Shout out TeeKray.

In the Sydney game, 8 of the more obvious goals were 4 to Boak, 2 to Burton IIRC and 2 with Rat's man running off him. Not really our defensive players but duds who shouldn't be playing in the team. Burton is a defender but not accountable, I know.
Agree, none of those players should be in our team.

They considered doing separate deals for Lukosius and Richards.

Connors got the deal done though. He's not even Houston's agent - his agent is Nick Giechen (sp) who is part of Connors' management group and is tight with Crippa. And that relationship is why Houston went to Connors directly and essentially said "you need to get the deal done for me because Nick isn't going to" - and so Connors went to work and did what he does best. He's the Jorge Mendes of the AFL.

Lukosius was always going to cost a future 1 with a sweetener coming back - that was agreed upon very quickly during negotiations. I'm getting variations on what the sweetener was (being the salary dump of Atkins). I was told yesterday the sweetener was getting pick swaps of 39 into 36 and 58 into 50, but this morning (before the trade was done) I was told Atkins being part of the deal ensured Port got pick 29. So I'm not quite sure about wtf happened in the end.
It is pretty obvious that Houston played us like a fool. He never had our best interests at heart even though he publically declared that he just wanted to go back home to Victoria.

He was never going to one of the lesser clubs in Melbourne.

We need to disband the list management team at the club and start again as every other club in the league will think we cave in to meet their demands.

There should be some reason for every player on the list. Having mcentee, clurey, Williams and adding atkins is too much list clogging.
Yep. Especially when at the end of 2025, when some of them come out of contract (McEntee, Atkins) we won’t have good draft picks to use to replace them, so they’ll just be substituted by more spuds.

Dan is a very good player and we got unders for him but the backline was very good and much more accountable on the back end of the year and when Houston was out suspended. Houston can be a liability defensively and caught out. Not as much as Burton but he still can.

And as people have stated, the two finals we lost against Geelong and Sydney, we lost in the coaching box and the midfield, not the backline.

The position of QB seagull he played in our team is probably the one with the most obvious glam factor positions in the entire AFL and it was no coincidence that Jase Burgoyne picked up 10 coaches votes and looked like the Second Coming of Dan Houston himself when he was put in the QB seagull role against the Hawks.

Whoever is put there and I personally would put Kane Farrell there will have a great year and you all should get on board for his Fantasy Points.

Dan is awesome but I think very replaceable but we will see. It's time for guys to step up. Allir, Zerk and Bergman as the talls. Farrell, Lachie Jones, Levans and Sinn as our medium defenders. A lot to work with there. A lot more versatility, height athleticism and defensive play.

Say what?

That Geelong final our entire backline was all at sea. The small forwards of Geelong ran rings around us as they were continually allowed space and get behind us to score easy goals. There was no accountability from any of our defenders. Yes they did not have much chance because of how shit our midfield was that night but there were numerous comical defending efforts.

I'll put it like this. Any time our midfield broke even or better, the backline was very good.

In those two games, the midfield was smashed which makes it very difficult in the backline and they looked terrible because quality ball is coming in.

I'm going to say this. The Geelong and Sydney finals were lost before a ball was bounced. Hinkley's strategies against Scott and Longmire were too little against two very good operators and we know Kenny Average won't adjust.
