Your avatar is hypnotic.

I like to imagine it's Dean Laidley inside that.

I blame myself for this going public. And I was talking about Ripper's disco stormtrooper not his current GOT incarnation.

As for the issues in play:

1. Dean is a fantastic North Melbourne person. As courageous a player as you'd get. Not a perfect coach by means but it's interesting how many stories players seem to have about him now, seemed to leave an impression at the least. And his 2007 may well have saved our skins.

2. The cross-dressing. It's irrelevant whether it's your cup of tea or not. Disgusting this has been made public without his consent. I'd be very concerned that his inner life getting splashed around like this could finish the bloke off. Hope not.

3. The charges. We'll learn in time if these are an overstatement of more unconcerning matters. Or whether he has really serious shit to account for.

None of this should be public. Even if the guy is guilty he's hardly living the high life in the papers and justifying in any way his family being subjected to this kind of exposure.

Think it was JB who said in an interview with Corey that he had watched as Laids coached us to a preliminary final with one full time assistant coach, two part time assistant coaches, one physio and one strength and conditioning coach?

I believe I have posted here before saying that when the wolves were at the door in 07/08, Laids' efforts to get a really average list to a preliminary final and go a long way to proving that we weren't a spent force in Victoria in a football sense, is arguably one of the more stirring contributions anyone has made to the history of this club

I wholeheartedly concur with those saying that Dean's private life is his private life, and hoping that he ends up getting the help he needs to address any mental health or substance abuse issues

From a moderation standpoint on BF, please leave off each other with the personal attacks - obviously we are keeping a close eye on this thread as it's the first real footy-adjacent news we've had in a while and is clearly generating a lot of interest. If we see it continuing we'll deal with it accordingly

Similarly we request that you don't share or post any video or photos you may be in possession of, or request those videos from others on this thread or board. I (and the other mods) encourage those seeking that content to head to the main board thread where it seems they're being a little more lenient. There's no nefarious background information to this request from us, we just don't know whether there will be a cleanup required further down the track, and we're trying to head that off at the pass

Any questions or concerns; as well as if this thread and the issues discussed within it raise any issues in your personal life and you want to chat judgement free - please feel free to PM a mod, any mod, if you'd like to discuss

Thanks all

And didnt hutchy get burnt becasue he didnt double check his throurth before he went with his story only to be wrong.....leading to his demise as a reporter?
Youd think he'd learn from that years ago.

Mighta even left out a stint at Port. Hasn't been at North for what, 11 years ?

We love Laids. Whatever he is going through will run its inevitable course.

He needs help ? I hope we can provide it.

Police command are understood to be ropable and the person who took the photo appears likely to face disciplinary action, according to Victoria Police sources. MORE >>> https://bit.ly/2Wg8BSc

"disciplinary action"?

If this ends with nothing more than "counseling" then VicPol's staggering levels of hypocrisy can no longer be doubted by even the most pious puritanical company man.

THIS.

As a journo/editor, you have to ask yourself, where is the public interest?

Now if Dean was still a serving senior coach and this happened, then there is a genuine public interest argument for reporting (not publishing the pictures).

But now, dude is a suburban footy team coach.

I would be very interested to see how it would have played out had the cops not leaked his pictures.

And would guess that's just for the passion of coaching too. I think he's made his crust largely in low key public sector surrounds in recent years.

Also before anyone here or elsewhere continues on the ridiculous generalisations of North Melbourne past-players.

At any given time you have 40 odd people on a list from a variety of backgrounds with a variety of predilections. Apply the same sample size to any workplace or other club at any time and you might be surprised what you find.

None of which justifies their private matters being made open for public dissection.

The public interest is we're a state in lockdown and there's media craving any story they can get their hands on.

Cops are at fault and hypocritical given the events of the past fortnight.

The media especially the football media take no prisoners in their desire to report on any scrap of vaguely football related content. It is the very reason we get the cycle of destruction that is Ben Cousins thrust in our faces every so often.

It is of no surprise that the first people in the media seemingly connected to this were from croc media. If they were to disappear (and take Ricky Nixon with them) would the football public actually lose anything?

I would imagine there’s quiet a few people in the back rooms, who would actually be quiet pissed at him being outted like he has been.
Wasn’t his choice to go public, there would be a lot of sympathy.

They don’t make content decisions though. Tabloids all over it. ABC no mention other than charges I could see and no pics.

Yep, and any gay player who was thinking about coming out has just decided stuff that.

The drugs make them important stories to report on in my view. It's one thing to tell your kids "don't do drugs", it's another to be able to contrast well paid footballers celebrating on the premiership dais with ice addicts in alleyways desperately seeking their next hit. These guys are their heroes so when those critical peer pressure moments arise they can think about them rather than the abstract advice from their dorky parents.

The leaking of those photos by Victoria Police is disgusting of course.

I truly hope that Dean can get the help he obviously needs.

I think it is a sad reflection on today's society that something so personal should be played out to the public in such a humiliating way.

This type of thing can hardly help Dean's current mental state & these things should be considered before photos like this are displayed for the whole country to see.

I feel really sorry for Dean and his family at this time and hope the media can leave everyone concerned alone and let the legal system deal with whatever needs to be done in due course.
