isn't the matter of television timing the major obstacle for us ie getting the event to the mass international audience at convenient times?

FIFA (like the Olympics) demand total control and access to any venues for the entirety of the tournament. Using the MCG for a FIFA World Cup in June/July would leave the ground without AFL for at least six weeks.

Footy pays the bills, year in, year out, in Victoria. It's why we didn't even get a quarter final for the current Women's World Cup.

TV may be a bonus as games would be on in prime time in emerging Asian markets, and some games would be on at good times in the USA. Europe would be a problem.

Very happy to keep it this way also 😬

Unfortunately, I agree. The AFL in particular won't move out of the way for FIFA (the NRL have done a bit of moving during the current event).

According to some soccer fans I've spoken to, the AFL should just move aside (or be made to), and any talk of compensation is just nonsense.

It would be time to expand the rectangular stadium to 60k, we wouldn't need an MCG-sized stadium, not many other countries have multiple 100k stadia to host the world cup. Storm and Rebels would still be a problem.

Marvel Stadium should have retractable seating that comes out onto the oval and makes it a true rectangle increasing the capacity to 60,000+ seating. I noticed the stadium in Sydney has that.

I also read FIFA is increasing minimum maximum seating capacities

Marvel does have retractable seating.

They don't use it much because it stuffs the grass.

Cheaper to expand the rectangular (and better for the taxpayer) than to spend that for the AFL to expand Docklands.

MCG is Govt-controlled, but have strict contracts with AFL, so essentially the AFL Has enough power to veto during winter.

Personally I would hope that we didn't waste time and money chasing the corrupt FIFA World Cup pipe dream

we've got enough legitimate stuff that needs doing in the state to focus on and already spend too much ****ing money on professional sports infra as it is

Completely agree. Sports infrastructure and more sporting events in winter is hardly what Australia needs to invest in.

We could do it on a minimal infrastructure spend, even less if we co-hosted it with the EnZedders like we have this time. Probably have to get in line behind England though who could do similar.

Well said, we burnt at least $45m in taxpayer funds last time (plus a lot of money on junkets for pollies and canberracrats) on their corrupt process and would have lose billions if we had won them. That money is needed for health, housing, public transport, climate change, education, defence etc

Particularly since it doesn't have a glittering reputation for lawn conditioning/turf maintenance. At times the surface was worse than Waverly Park.

Fifa might actually think Scummo is a match for their ethics.

Titus O'reily and Mick Molloy went through the dogey road to the Qatar world cup on thier Sports Bizzare podcast.

It was as crooked as a dog's hind leg

Or at least spend on sports which don’t pack up and leave with the moolah

I'm not a sports guy.
Fund the grass roots and community stuff
Way too much money gets funneled into professional sports at the expense of the local stuff.

If you're going to spend money on sport do it at a level where everyone has a chance to benefit and participate if they want to

i played junior cricket on concrete/carpet pitches that’d been set on fire, and football games on grounds that would occasionally have syringes & glass around the ground. that was in the early 2000s and i hope there’s been some change, but i sincerely doubt it

They have selective amnesia about how fifa took the bribe and shafted them anyway.

bribeS

But I was thinking more of the money they'd have to pay the AFL for them to hand over their contractual rights to whichever grounds are required (MCG, and perhaps Docklands, AO, & Perth too) for 2+ months in the middle of their season in order to give a massive PR boost to their competition.

Our time-zone just doesn't work for sport in Europe, like our day games in Sydney/Melbourne would be at 5am and our night games would be shown at 11am. We'll never be seriously considered for it, if an eastern country is going to get it you'd think China is the most likely option.
